This song was featured in a movie called The Strawberry Statement that came out about 1969 My sister had the soundtrack and that's where I first heard it.Later I heard it on the radio in the early seventies.
I was 20 when this Thunderclap Newman hit the radio in the U.S. - it was a smash! (Wright Brothers first flight at Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina -1903)
I used to hear this song on one of the two rock stations in Houston, Texas in the early/mid-‘80’s. They both had time slots on Sundays when they played classic stuff from the ‘60’s that they didn’t play the rest of the week. Great song!
@@alan-reacts65 I think I came in at the end of that (turned 18 in ‘84). A few songs and performers I picked up watching movies, in the mid ‘90’s I could still discover a lot from MTV (before “reality” show invasion), discovered a love for Leonard Cohen’s voice at a stripclub in Portland, Oregon in the late ‘90’s, and a love for Nick Drake from a 2000’s car commercial.
Always loved this song and I know I've heard it throughout the years--the early 70's was big on protest music on certain radio stations.. I also thought this was a US band. I just finished watching Almost Famous, and it was part of the soundtrack, and I've seen that it was included in the movie Magic Christian. Now I have an idea for a playlist ... Thanks Alan!
Morning Julie 😊 “Almost Famous “ Cameron Crows finest 😊 and the 70s gave us so much music right ? I’m just making coffee it’s 4:30am and this the hours I get to relax read and enjoy making some content , oh and “ Ten Years After “ 👍

And the message of this song has still not sunk in!

My band used to perform this. Some slight changes, but I am very familiar with this song.
