The lead guitarist is Jimmy McCulloch born 1953 he was around 15/16 when this was recorded. He had played in bands since age 11 and had been on tour with The Who in a support band. Couple of years after this he joined Wings at the invite of Paul McCartney. Keep having fun you two. Cheers.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers covered this song to add new content to their first Greatest Hits album.
Petty had the clout to do any song in rock and roll, so the fact that he chose this is a good "thumbs up" for it.

"The Time Has Come" is an absolutely great song…but the extended version runs 11:03 and these folks don't do long songs on the channel.
(I'm still desolated we can't get The Doors doing any of Morrison's longer pieces, especially "When the Music's Over".)

Pete Townshend did not play guitar with TN. He helped put the band together, and he played bass for at least part of the band's short life, recording his tracks from his own home studio. Jimmy McCulloch, who later was a part of Paul McCartney's band Wings, was the lead guitarist for the group. Pete's nephew Josh later joined the band on rhythm guitar.

If you haven't heard it, for me, Marvin Gaye did the definitive version. I'm in the UK, however, and I don't ever hearing that Dion's original was released here, whereas Marvin was very well known - but Marvin was black so maybe didn't get the airplay, in the USA?

THE BUGGLES - I Love You Miss Robot / 1979 very Futuristic sounding with it's amazing Slap Bass sound right from the start and it gets even better as the Vocalist begins to use the Talk Box integrated with other KEYBOARD 🎹 EFFECTS makes for a very Up Best 70s song that sounds as if it came out in the 80s it's an EPIC and creative sound that paved the way in today's music

Another great '60s song. Unfortunately, Thunderclap Newman was a One Hit Wonder, so you won't find anything else from them. (And yes, it's Thunderclap Newman, not "Newton.") This song reminded me of another song from around that same time (maybe a year or two later) that I don't think you've heard yet. And I know Amber's inner hippie would LOVE it. Check out "Get Together" by the Youngbloods. One of the landmark songs of that era.

Hi from the UK. This is a great song which I first heard through my parents who both played a lot of music at home when I was young. It’s great it’s still appreciated by the younger generation and its message has a lot of meaning.
I love your pictures behind you too. Such a varied and rich selection of talented artists.

Yes, Leon Russell on keyboards! Worked with many of the greats. His work with Marc Benno as "the Asylum Choir" is vintage Vietnam Era protest songs, predating his Shelter People classics. I very highly recommend 'Straight Brother' with intro, 'Ballad for a Soldier' & 'Down on the Base'.

Percy Shelley, the 19th Century British Poet wrote, "Our sweetest songs tell of saddest thoughts." It could not be more true. We were in the midst of a true revolution, some of it nasty and violent. Couching words like 'hand out the guns and ammunition' in such sweet music was a masterful stroke.

ARE THEY KIDDING ME?! That piano interlude's the ONE thing this song could lose without the possibility of harm to the tune. I mean, it's cute, but the song does not require it in any way, as the rest of it--the actual song itself--is brilliant. It's the piano part that interrupts the brilliance. What were these two listening to?

This song was in the movie "The Magic Christian", which is a seriously messed-up comedy probably not fit for TH-cam reactions, but really worth watching!

Always love your reactions. It is a classic, but please be aware of the type of revolution they are singing about with their "hand out the arms and ammo we're gonna to blast our way through here" lyric.

The vocal on this recording is actually the janitor whom was in the studio. This project was put together by Pete Townshend of The Who. This song was featured in the bizarre film "The Magic Christian". Another song in that film is Badfinger's "Come And Get It". The movie was about greed.

Thunderclap Newton's song, 'Something In The Air' is a fantastic song and I was lucky enough a few years ago to find an original 45 rpm record of the song for a dollar from a local Value Village thrift store in perfect scratch-free shape. :)

This has always been one of my favorites. I love the part when the pianist Newman starts to play offbeat and how we can play offbeat then go back to the beat then play offbeat again so seamlessly is really good. PS you could have at least got his name right.

Jay, speaking of piano and keyboards, I still don't understand why you guys haven't done "Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu". I truly don't get it because it's one of those songs you should have definitely done by now.. The piano in that song will literally blow your socks off Jay!

Great memories of this song in the late 60's, a one hit wonder but what a one hit wonder.
A great song from the mid 70's which includes great piano and strings is Music by John Miles (sadly no longer with us). Incidentally, he did backing vocals and guitar for Tina Turner on her tours. Very talented guy, played drums, guitar, piano and had a great voice too.

The writer and piano player was also Pete Townshend's driver. When he heard them he helped round out the band and they recorded it at Pete's home studio. Notice also how some of the background music and general production sounds VERY much like George Martin's Beatles productions. Loved this record, it came out when I was a freshman in college (I'm 75), and I have it in both my vehicles media playlists. Tom Petty did a nice cover of this as well. Thunderclap (Andy) Newman passed March 2016 at age 73

The writer and lead singer and drummer on the record was Speedy Keen and he was a mate of Pete's, as well as being his driver. He also played some drums and helped out on some Pete's demos. As Speedy had problems with singing lead and drumming they got Jack McCulloch in for when they had to go 'live'. Jack is the older brother of the lead guitarist, Jimmy. The pianist was an old mate of Pete's - Andy Newman - known as 'Thunderclap' around the West London music scene.

Beat Club -- German television show not unlike American Bandstand or Midnight Special in the US, or "Old Grey Whistle Test" in the UK. Lip-synch here, but you get the idea with Thunderclap Newman -- there's a rock song interrupted if you will with ragtime piano, and a whole album of it!! It's called Hollywood Dream and there are a lot of good songs, produced by Pete Townshend of The Who. Glad you guys have begun the idea of reacting to Thunderclap Newman.

Thunderclap Newman were an English rock band that Pete Townshend of the Who and Kit Lambert formed in 1969 in a bid to showcase the talents of John "Speedy" Keen, Jimmy McCulloch, and Andy "Thunderclap" Newman.... thats where the name comes from.
