  • A very unique and underrated piece by Alkan. It is very similar to Liszt’s Chasse Neige and during the performance I can hear wind blowing. Again, I also really enjoy the additional beginning. Jens Hagen Wegner nails the chromatic scails, voicing, and sheer dexterity and articulation needed to pull this off. It’s amazing
Thank you to katemior for suggesting this

thank you infinitely for making this score video! this is by far my favourite rendition of this piece, and i am glad it it finally paid the attention it deserves. by the way, if you wish for some more requests, i would love to see some Pierre-Alain Volondat videos, like his Scriabin etudes (perhaps even his Beethoven-Liszt symphony no 9), the Lyapunov etudes... Also the very few Zeltser performances.
Thank you so much for taking my recommendations, and i wish you a great day!

You’re very welcome and thank you for your comments! I really appreciate comments.
I plan to do other score videos (less during the week because im busy) and will look into the Volondat recordings. Its very unlikely I’ll do the Beethoven because its so long and I still feel like the Katsaris recording is still unbeatable.

@@Janeahmon i am very much subscribed, and have been for a while. Please listen to the volondat, i think it blows Katsaris' right out of the water for what it is worth.

Melody is a bit ripped from Beethoven 7 II, but I'm not complaining.

I think I know why Alkan wrote this piece (along with the other 2 pieces from the set)
In 1834, Alkan (21 years old at the time) wrote a letter to his friend masarnau that stated the following :
“I have a beautiful memory, it is of who is no more, perhaps that is why [it is so beautiful]. A woman loved me, but with a pure love, a disinterested love; she is dead. Is that fortunate, is it unfortunate, I ask myself? If she had lived, I might perhaps have wished to try her too sorely and there would not have been for me what I now call a beautiful memory. - Meanwhile I’m desolated, I weep. Yes, even though I sometimes forget in the whirlwind of events which surrounds me, it comes back to me later, and then it is a new force, remembrance, which arises from the smallest things, tearing my innards; inhuman desires seem to dominate my heart; I burn, I crave for something I cannot identify, I feel suspended in mid- air, wholly unable to cling either to heaven or earth ..... and yet she who causes my torment today suffered in her lifetime through me. I showed towards her a coldness that I did not feel, I went for a long time without seeing her, I never said farewell at her deathbed! Even though I was not to blame for this last cruelty, I would give my last drop of blood to have embraced her at her last moment, to be sure she forgave me my indifference.”
It is noted that Alkan sunk into depression and seclusion in his later years due to “repeated disappointments”, this must be one of them. The woman referred to in the letter is most likely a girlfriend. This piece Le Vent and the other 2 (Morte and Aime-moi) were written just 3 years after Alkan wrote said letter, giving a reasonable time within writing the letter and writing these 3 pieces. To top things off, in the French language, “Death” can be written in multiple ways but “Mort” means death (male) and “Morte” means death (female), in alkans set of 3 pieces, it is entitled “Morte” which means the death of a woman. My theory is that that piece “Morte” (and this entire set) is dedicated to the woman Alkan lost.
