Ravel Gaspard de la Nuit - Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli - London 1959 Live (Score)
Absolutely jaw dropping performance of Ravel’s Gaspard de la Nuit, one of the most difficult ever piano pieces in standard repertoire.
Every movement is phenomenal and is played in such a poetic manner. The ondine beginning chords in the RH, and the double note runs near the climax, both of which are very difficult and uncomfortable to play, have such a clear, and perfectly crystalline sound which sounds better than so many other pianists. His voicing in the movement and the climax, one of my favourite parts in piano literature are impeccable. I love the way he treats it; not playing it too fast (the part that leads to the climax) and the climax itself is very clear and it has the perfect balance of RH and LH bass which compliment each other. 5:21 is amazing. Michelangeli definitely has the best performance of Ondine.
The second movement, La Gibet, is a real treasure with the atonal structure and mysterious and eerie feeling to it, and it is really present here.
Michelagenli plays this piece best in my opinion but this exact recording in 1959 London is my favourite performance mainly because of La Gibet, which I felt was slow enough to feel the emotions that Ravel intended, similar to Argerich’s performance. I prefer it compared to his 1960 recording in Prague which is 2 whole minutes faster and in this he lets the piece breathe more especially the movement. Not to mention the piano is of much higher quality, which makes the bass sound more profound.
The final and most famous & technically difficult movement, Scarbo, is incredible. In the start the repeating D-Sharp notes are the cleanest I have heard them and at a perfect tempo. His scarbo is metronomic but very ectatic, powerful, and passionate with a profound bass. 16:40 and 20:45, the two climaxes, are played with fiery. No excess rubato just Michelangeli creating magic.

I hope you enjoy the new score layout: I stopped using imovie and screen recording the score (thats why in previous videos there was an annoying grey arrow icon in the corner of the screen) and instead am using premiere rush after learning how to use it properly. As such the videos look better and the transition between pages are much more fluid.

A stunning, dark, gloomy, sad, explosive, and powerful recording of Liszt Funerailles. Live performance by young Horowitz in 1948. He truly captures the essense in this piece, butg I am not sure why he skips many parts as I think it detracts from the performance. Still my favourite rendition. I have no words. This is Liszt’s transcription of the legendary Beethoven Symphony No. 9, my favourite symphony, and is unanimously regarded as the most difficult Liszt composition he ever made. The piece is over an hour long, in this case 79 entire minutes, divided into four enormous movements, and the stamina, voicing, speed, clarity etc. required to pull this off for that amount of time is o...

In my opinion the greatest recording of this mighty and famous Beethoven piece, well known for its genius and innovative jazz like part in the second and final movement. Two of my favourite recordings of Liszt/Donizetti Lammermoor, an majestic and short operatic paraphrase. The first recording I encontered is by Hegedus, but these two are better in my opinion. It is modern but it has deviations to the score, such as in the ending which make it the most powerful executed, along...

This is an AWESOME feat and I'm by no means trying to hate, but I really don't get some of the musical decisions here - perhaps the easy bits are helpful as a break for the pianist, but a lot of these easy bits sound like a string of notes rather than Beethoven 9, and there are a lot of added bass notes for dramatic effect that feel really out of place.

Beginning at around 7:00, we can easily sense that Horowitz is switching over to frenzied mode, resulting in a tempo that even he can't sustain, omitting a few measures in the process. There's excitement, of course, but this borderline hysteria unfortunately makes for a less-than-musical experience. A pianist of his colossal abilities could've certainly done more to realize this piece to the fullest extent without resorting to such extreme over-dramatization.

I never heard anyone accuse this piece of being of high quality, and this performance does its best to substantiate the idea. Could the opening tempo be any alower? Could the rest of the piece be played any more sloppily or unmusically? No one (in my listening experience), not even Horowitz, has been able to make this piece "work", and I can't imagine why a pianist would bother with it, there being so many dozens of "worthier" works from which to choose.
