When I was a little girl I would go to the local swimming pool and there would be music played over loud speakers. This song was one I heard at that pool. Swimming, feeling the sun, tasting chlorine in my nose and hearing this song is one of my favorite childhood memories. I love you guys btw!

Just so you know, as a massive YES fan, I have my doubts that Brad has any kind of appetite for early YES music. I actually thought that he'd like Leave It until I noticed he's watching the MTV vid they made, which has got to be the strangest music vid every concocted for a song as great as Leave It is. I knew he'd be distracted by it, but I thought the lyrics were comprehensible for him to 'get it.'
The other thing with Brad is he's described himself as a simple man with simple tastes. YES was The Premiere band of any era to produce songs of tremendous *complexity* that can only be appreciated with repeated listenings. In spite of the complexity, YES was often able to produce some perfectly blended complexity into very pop-ish sounding tunes. Lex would probably totally enjoy a journey into YES' catalog, but Brad needs to be brought along slowly, with the most commercial sounding songs with lyrics that aren't too metaphorically dense, as Jon liked to compose.
I'm hopeful that he could warm up to *Yours Is No Disgrace, I've Seen All Good People, Long Distance Runaround.* He may never get around to where he'd be able to admire such masterpieces as *Starship Trooper, South Side Of The Sky,* or any of the masterpieces on the *Close To The Edge* album.
To each his own, right? (shrugs shoulders)

Yes was a great '70s prog rock band, funky "Roundabout", "Yours No Disgace" , "Starship Trooper", etc. Different sounding back in the '70s . They were good in the '80s, too, but changed their style a little, got a little weird for their typical style. Kind of pop rock and new wave, lot of synthesizers and weird sounds like this song, also see also ' 80s videos and soungs from them like "Owner of a Lonely Heart", "It Can Happen", etc. 🎸

You guys really need to check out "The Yes Album" and "Close To The Edge", which is widely considered to be not only the greatest prog album, but the greatest album ever produced...period. The songs "And You And I", "I've Seen All Good People", and "Starship Trooper" are my personal favorites, and should not be missed. One advantage to being older than dirt (like I am), is that I got to see them perform numerous times over several decades. Their live shows were a real treat for the senses. 1980s Yes (Trevor Rabin on guitar) is definitely different from 1970s Yes (Steve Howe on guitar), because Rabin did more of the songwriting whereas the 1970s were more by Jon Anderson (vocals) and Chris Squire (bass, backing vocals), who had founded the band. A more metal-esque song than the pure progressive rock of the earlier band, but that's not to say they didn't have their successes. Glad to see you're doing more than just "Owner of a Lonely Heart".
That said, there's still a TON of 1970s stuff to cover, from "Time and A Word" through "Tempus Fugit" and so much in between. Glad you enjoyed it.

This was Yes’ big commercial album, produced by the quintessential 80s monster producer Trevor Horn. Lots of old Yes fans frowned upon this, although it was essentially the band’s big payday. But you hear their prog rock origins in tracks such as this one, where they completely mess with our minds and sense of timing. It’s as if a regular 4/4 time signature would bore them to death, unless they got to mix it up a bit.

For the full effect of the intro, you really need to listen to the preceding track on the 90125 album, called 'Cinema' followed by 'Leave it'. The way that Cinema ends with an atmospheric climax and then Leave It's acapella intro just drops perfectly into the 'space' thus created is one of those magical moments in music.

One thing about the 60's-90's was that--as long as the music was *super* good (as in, it could last 50+ years and still be loved by people of completely different generations and influences)--then people could release *any* type of song, produced in *any* way, and it would be accepted by a huge number of people. Music was so wildly diverse. Even if you put on a new album of a group you knew well, they could still completely surprise you with what you heard. This song is a good example of that.

As big of a hit and as great of a song as "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" is, "Leave It" is my favorite song by Yes, and I'm glad to see it getting more attention as the years go by. "Leave It" was the follow-up to "Owner Of A Lonely Heart," peaking at #3 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart on April 14, 1984; and #24 on the Billboard Hot 100 on April 21, 1984.
In all, Yes had 11 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 from 1971-1991, including six Top 40 hits:
"Your Move (I've Seen All Good People)" (#40 in 1971)
    "Roundabout" (#13 in 1972)
"Owner Of A Lonely Heart" (#1 in 1984)
    "Leave It" (#24 in 1984)
"Love Will Find A Way" (#30 in 1987)
"Rhythm Of Love" (#40 in 1988)
The music video for "Leave It" was considered very cutting-edge by 1984 standards, being one of the first music videos to rely primarily on CGI effects, and also having 18 different versions, including one during which the band just stands upside-down and sings. MTV once aired all 18 versions of the video consecutively. Apparently, the 11th version of the video is the "official" video that you just watched. Also noteworthy is that the videos were directed by Godley & Creme, a duo who branched off from the 1970s band 10cc, and are best known for their song "Cry," which was their only hit in the U.S. (#16 in 1985).
Unfortunately, the TV show Glee never featured this song, which is a damn shame, given that the choral style of the song lends itself quite well to glee clubs.

Some clever songs from an album with such an unimaginative title (90125, the catalog number).

THANK YOU, I have been waiting for ANYONE to react to this song! It is so freaking cool, with some amazing vocal work by Jon Anderson and Yes. I think the song is basically about life in a touring band, how it wears you down, and how "leaving it" might be "heaven", but in the end you're still in the band. When old-school Yes fans disparage the 90125 album, I don't think they appreciate how innovative it really was.

I just imagined Lex as a cook in a restaurant that serves breakfast. You know, the one where you can see the cook through a large opening in the wall. Then this song comes on, and she goes crazy, flipping food all over the place, laughing, and making her dance moves. The song ends, and she turns around to find all the customers covered in eggs, pancakes, home fries, and bacon. Then I see Brad looking at her with his classic grin, and what the heck was that expression.

Such a brilliant and underrated song, thanks for this awesome reaction. 😊
This tune has consistently brought me joy every time I've heard it for nearly forty years, and I appreciate how much Lex was feeling it on the first listen, I'm guessing it's about how I reacted. 🙃

Bands like YES, Meatloaf, E.L.O., Styx, Planet P, , Alens Parson Project, Pink Floyde, ... were putting out albums (a record in a paper sleeve with art work, photos and other writings),
    called : "Rock Opras."
The songs had relation to each other telling a larger story.

Trevor Rabin was in a rock band from South Africa called Rabbitt(with 2 t's) b4 coming to LA where he met Chris Squire. They had formed a new band called Cinema when Jon Anderson contacted Chris with new songs. Steve Howe was in the band Asia. They decided to reform Yes & record a new album, called 90215. Cinema is the name of a song on it. ✌

When this song came out. They had a series of music videos. The 1st one was just them standing singing the song for the whole video. The 2nd one the were turned away from the camera. Then upside down. It became more and more crazy with every video release. You are watching the last one.

This is Yes attempting to make the transition to Pop, following in the footsteps of Genesis. "Hello, Goodbye" is a Beatles song. "Hello I Must Be Going" is a song by Groucho Marx.

One of the best albums during my early 20s! Loved every song of it! At first I found it disgusting and too much "mainstream", "disco" compared to the earlier YES albums, but over the years it started to grow and became better each year compared to the "trash" that was released years and decades after.

This was probably mentioned but this video had 18 Different versions, a different version each day was aired on MTV. It eventually led to a contest where you can win a VHS cassette (and I think a camcorder) of all versions. It revolved around the April 1st date. It’s nuts. There are some good Yt vids on the history of the whole thing. Bizarre!

The sampled hits are very reminscent of The Art of Noise. Trevorn Horn produced both bands. This was a huge change in sound for Yes & a revitalization. They have a ton of incredible songs - some very moving - Heart of the Sunrise, And You & I. Check out Going for the One for another short, fun song with a lot going on.

Videos were not band priorities during early MTV days (no way to sell or distribute), but Yes had already released Yessongs 3/75 (film in theaters). Record companies demanded videos to get them on MTV and sell albums (they were made quick and cheap). Yes, recorded 18 versions of this video in a day, for a contest where viewers were to recognize the differences and #11 became the standard. This video had to be simple and cheap to make. Video production was not blessed with modern computer tools and were difficult to make. This video video. th-cam.com/video/kFNXbiNfjtI/w-d-xo.html tells the history/story of the award winning video team hired to create the videos, the contest and air time required to show 18 versions (genius) of the video.
