One of the most iconic songs from the prog rock era. The guitarist, Steve Howe, was voted “Best Guitarist” for five years straight in Guitar Player magazine.
Actually Howe won it four yrs while Squire won it 6yrs and Squire said that he should of won the guitar the two yrs Howe didn't

I mean, it's GOOD. But Yes did better, before and after this.
I put it tied for second with Gates, with Awaken as the pinnacle of anything I've ever heard, and I like a lot of different genres.
But the nice thing is that there's so much that everyone has a favorite that takes them to places they love to visit.

Ladies and gentlemen YES the greatest show on earth. The first of 7 symphonic masterpieces. Don't worry son it knocks everybody on their ass especially emotionally, cried like a baby the first time I saw Yes perform it. 🙏🍁

This is something of a masterpiece, eh? First the rhthym- Bill Bruford on drums. He hates 4/4 time. Bass- Chris Squire. He is in a class all his own. Rick Wakeman on keyboards- he is obvoiusly classically trained and likes to play with the newest technologies of synths. Steve Howe was pretty much in the background on this one, but a master of his craft. John Anderson has perfect tone and is just soothing to lister to. The composition of this is not off the charts, but it's close to the edge! ;)

Steve's "rhythm" work with the Danelectro Choral Sitar Guitar gives the song much of it's character. But for me what I love most about Steve are the little fills that dance around the main melodies. One thing about Yes, is that they knew that balls to the wall, notes per second are not what prog is about. They are comfortable with their virtuosity and can play what fits rather than always trying to impress. If it needs slow and simple, that's what they do. B2W when called for. Funk, classical, country, etc, come to the fore when they fit. For me, another thing about Yes is the way that familiarity improves the songs. What may be jarring or even unpleasant on first listen, becomes anticipated as you come to realize how perfect it is.
IMO. most Prog Metal isn't really prog, just flash, complexity (signatures, polyrhythms, key changes) for the sake of them. It's like having a meal with only the spices.
@@davep8221 That was well put. I agree with you 100%. Especially the comment you made about Prog. pretenders. Soul-less music is so disappointing and a heartbreaking, soul-crushing punishment to the ears. With some soul and integrity, I can enjoy any genre of music.
@@unichusettsofmassadversity9705 stems are the individual instrument tracks for the song. Basically, the isolated guitars. Look for it on TH-cam. To me, this is Steve Howe’s greatest compositional guitar work. His solo at the beginning of the song is undoubtedly one of his finest.
The first minutes of musical craziness are to keep away the people that just want to listen to simple and straightforward tunes ;-)
I'm an old fart hippie progrock relic non famous musician. Close to the Edge had a profound affect on my life. If someone I know hasn't heard this song, I will eventually insist that they listen to it, and if they don't like it, I half to seriously consider whether I want to spend anymore time with them.

Probably the greatest orchestration ever written in the modern age. Masterpiece unrivaled in the age of electric instruments. Close to the Edge, 2112, Hemispheres. This was the age of modern Mozart, Handel, Mendelssohn and Bach. Here I believe, as do most others, is the pinnacle of Prog rock, and indeed all of modern music.

I would say Magma's pieces are the best of the modern age. Christian Vander's work is so incredibly original, so singular.
This is a track that took me soooo long to get into but bloody hell was it worth it. One of the most beautiful things I know of.
I always felt like the opening brings in the noisey chaos from the nature sounds. A noise that is daily life. Then peels back the sound to tell the story of introspection.
Gets us close to the edge of realization. We have to take the next step to get there.

The replay value here is pretty high. For those of us who have been listening to "Close to the Edge" for 40-50 years we *still* find new things that are amazing. So it's OK for the first listen to just be "Wow."
As a classical guitarist I think you'd find Steve Howe to be an interesting player. He started in the early 1960's playing Chuck Berry while also falling in love with Les Paul. He opted not to follow the standard blues route like most English guitarists in the 60's, but dove deeper into the music of Wes Montgomery and Jim Hall. By the time he joined Yes he was also soaking up the classical work of Segovia, Williams and Bream. If you watch the "Sounding Out" film from 1972 (it's on TH-cam) there's a bit where he demonstrates how he took something from Vivaldi and put a bit of country guitar against it to come up with his own thing. And that's basically his unique style: country flat-picking + fluid jazz improvising + 60's rock riffing. Around the time of this album he also discovered the pedal steel, which he used to create some other-worldly and almost psychedelic soundscapes. Anyways, I'm interested in hearing your continuing reaction to Yes, and Steve Howe in particular (he won the Guitar Player "Best Guitarist" poll so many times in the 70's he was moved into their Hall of Fame category so he couldn't compete any more! 😁)
No way! Are there sections where Howe is using pedal steel on this song? Please tell! PSG player for the last two years and my goal is to find non-country avenues for it, like sacred steel or ambient like Daniel Lanois which sounds more like where Steve was with it.

He uses it for swoopy atmospherics, sort of like how Gilmour was using it for Pink Floyd around the same time. Certainly not conventional pedal steel. (Gilmour also used a LOT of lap steel)
Chris Squire is one of my all time favorite musicians. He is such an amazing rock bass guitarist, and his harmonies are flawless in the studio and live.
Yes began as a psychedelic, jazz, rock, pop fusion band in the 60s. The became one of the main pioneers of progressive rock in the seventies. The 80s saw them disband then reform after a few years with a more mainstream rock guitarist and sound. A rotating lineup of old and new members took them through the following decades blending progressive and commercial influences. They are still going with a different singer and only the guitarist left from this classic era. They have so much great music to explore.
I'd say there's a split between Yes fans as to the group's most epic work. Some say Close to the Edge, others Gates of Delirium, and still others (including me) Awaken. Roundabout is also a masterpiece. All pinnacles of prog-rock.
Yep, I would probably give my vote to Gates (or The Ancient) as their greatest full-length epic in purely musical terms, and Relayer as their single most exciting and groundbreaking album - but those are minor differences. What matters is that this band is a lifelong inspiration. The entire suite of albums they created between 1970 and 1977 had an incalculable impact on the way I listen to and understand music - together with the parallel suites of albums of those years by Genesis and Pink Floyd.
I'm a "Topographic Oceans" man myself. That album was what sealed the deal for me. Two that are tragically forgotten are "Mind Drive" and "That That Is." I think those two epics are brilliant!

Yes is among my top 3 favourite bands. My favourite of the day depends on which one I'm listening to at the moment. I subscribe to many reactors who react to Yes. Try branching out to Renaissance for a classical folky symphonic sound with an angelic female singer - Annie Haslam. Camel is worth a reaction or 2, as well as ELP, PFM, Genesis, King Crimson, King Crimson, and of course Pink Floyd.
Another of my favorite bands. Chris Squire on bass has an unmistakable tone. Same for Bruford on drums. You can always pick out his snare tone. Combined with Jon Anderson's vocals, Wakeman's amazing keys and Howe on guitar you have an absolutely amazing 5 piece ensemble.
Thank you. It is so rewarding to see music that I adored as a teen gathering a new audience with subsequent generations building an even deeper appreciation of our human musical library.
Every band member had there brilliant and epic moment on this song.. Bruford and Howe at the first act, Chris on the Total Mass Retain.. Jon at the end of I Get Up I Get Down and Rick obviously on the organ break and his final solo.. this was greatness.. this appear every 100 years on earth..

Also, I would love to hear reactions to this piece of music from musicians once they have heard it enough to digest it properly. It affects you so differently once you know it better.
Do you know Doug Helvering's channel? He's a classically trained composer and prog rock enthusiast, and regularly listens to, discusses and analyzes prog rock songs and albums. Also, the Wings of Pegasus channel - Fil makes great analyses and comments on the live musicianship and showmanship of all kinds of rock/pop/soul acts, and on the workings of the music business.

Close to the Edge is something you have to listen to a few times before you get it. Yes is like that, yeah they did some pop flavored progressive but they are truly one of the pioneers of progressive music!

The next Yes epic, chronogically, is The Revealing Science of God from Tales from Topograhic Oceans, I would highly recommend it, IMO the best Yes song ever.
I might give the "best Yes song" award to To Be Over or The Ancient, in terms of sheer artistic prowess and great compositions, but they were truly a one-of-a-kind band... :)
The band were fully committed to their theme, their melodies and contrast.....it is always a joy to hear a band appropriately wait through the quiet phrases and not rush......impeccable timing.
One thing no one ever talks about in this reaction: there are little water droplets during the quiet break, in between the organ solos! It’s like he’s singing inside a cavern that just happens to have a pipe organ lol

You really need to see these guys perform this live. They could pull it off night after night of 2 1/2+ hour shows in huge stadiums, with maybe five nights off a month. They are musician's musicians!
DEEPLY POWERFUL & MOVING!!!! you heard Awaken so you seem to like diving deep. If you continue on this path soon you'll be ready for their TALES of Topographic OCEANS & RELAYER and DON'T let ANYONE who isn't ready convince you not to! You must have heard 80's version of YES the first time. This is their most progressive era in the 70's. The shorter epics are on The YES ALBUM & FRAGILE as well as the next two songs on Close to the Edge. Those 2 songs are A MUST!!!!

I throughly enjoyed your reaction. Watching your reaction to each movement, your smiles, your nods. I get much pleasure from musicians and connoisseurs listening to CttE for the first time! Soak it in! Listen to it again, and again. It really is timeless music. And there is Side 2... And You and I, and Siberian Khatru - both outstanding and more of a showcase for Steve Howe.
Switched on Bach was a revolutionary take on keyboards. Now extrapolate that to Rick Wakeman…but then apply the same revolutionary fervor to the rest of the band. Elevated thematic aspirations are how I’d describe classic yes. It’s like opera-jazz.
Before there were Opeth, Tool, and Dream Theater, there was Yes.

YES is the greatest progressive rock group of all time and my favorite band. Some more good ones include "Roundabout", "The Gates of Delirium". "Turn of the Century"... Loads of good ones. I subscribe to anyone who reacts to them and so will thousands of others so keep those YES songs coming.

I can't wait to see you get your teeth (and ears) into RELAYER, perhaps their most groundbreaking album - certainly the one where they were the most ahead of their time musically. Steve Howe's guitar playing (and Alan White's drumming) on that album, just two years after CTTE, are exceptional - and very different from what we get to hear on this.

Genesis Firth of Fifth with Steve Hackets guitar playing, Tony Banks on Keyboard, Mike Rutherford on bass, guitar and Taurus Moog foot bass pedals, Phil Collins on drums and Peter Gabriel on flute and vocal. Then the Music Box, Supper’s Ready, Cinema Show/Aisle of Plenty and Dancing with the Moonlit Knight… just to mention a few of progressive rock best songs from the 70s

Great songs about how we cycle through life and death , visit Divinity in complete wholeness and peace for an infinite moment before the dance begins again.
It's actually deeper than that but gotta have a core to work with.
Recommend you put the microphone closer and use a compressor. Your voice level varies a lot.

There's a reactor I love who does his vids in two parts. The first part is just listening and actually writing down notes about what he's hearing, and you can see his reactions, but there's almost no interruptions except when he just has to. Then a follow vid where he discusses what's in his notes. Unfortunately, he's Italian and I've always found it hard to hear through accents, plus he has to drop into Italian in order to express more complex ideas. Still, I think that's the best format I've ever experienced. There's another reviewer, whose name escapes, me who does a full quiet listen through, and then comments.
I used to like The Daily Doug, but he just talks over the music way too much, giving his interpretation on one verse while making sure you can't hear the next one.
The live version on the Yessongs album is actually much better.
With what you said about the times you'd listened to Yes and it sounded commercial: they took a very commercial direction in the 80s, so you probably aren't wrong about your initial assessment. Their 70s stuff is a lot more progressive.

Since you're a classical guitarist why don't you listen to Mediterranean Sundance from the elegant Gypsy album by Al Di Meola and Paco de Lucia
I think he should just stop there . If he tried to listen to Relayer or Tales From Topographic Oceans , he would be physically unrecognizable the next day .
You picked a doosy to do if you weren’t ready. There is syncopation, odd time, polyrhythms, and expert musicianship haha. Not one to take lightly.

_Yes_ songs like this make me understand why they'll never ask the listener, "Was it as good for you as it was for me?" Love many of their songs, but some give me the weird vibe of being a voyeur; this isn't right, you carry on, I'm outta here.
