- I rebuilt my small parts counting machine into a smaller form factor with a better mechanical separator inspired by Rx pill counters. I sell kits with small parts and counting them by hand is time consuming. I made this robot to do the task.

One way to solve the jamming issue would be to add a couple of if-statements which makes the disk spin the other direction a quarter rotation and then back to normal if it has not detected any new nuts for a set time. This would cause the nuts to collide and prevent the jam.

I have a ideer for stack parts:
If a timer realize that that no more parts come, reverse the rotation of the disc for a second or so. That should reorientate the parts, and yout parts a not longer stack. This it is a simple software fix.

Instead of agitator/vibrator to prevent or solve jams at input you may try this with no additional hardware, only programming:
when you detect jam (no counting for x seconds at hall sensor) reverse disk motor CCW for 3 seconds, then forward CW again. If 3 attemps no solve detect no more parts or bad jam/malfuncion: stop disk and beep for operator to come.
Maybe someone already suggested this but you can reverse the 'disk' after X amount of seconds has pass without counting nuts. This will release any stuck parts at the gate

Nice evolution from your first machine! Personally I'd have the bar on a servo so you can simply select the size from a menu (or even better a barcode), that way you could also program some sort of agitating motion in the bar too to keep things flowing.
thanks. that's a lot of complication for something your fingers can do in 10 seconds. I do agree with the agitator; does need a mechanism to stir/ unclog jams.
Next level is to put several platters with different parts to make the machine capable of kitting.

Hi Ryan. I run a grassroots incubator developing entrepreneurship that reuses materials currently deemed "not worth the time". One project under consideration is jigsaw puzzles. I was wondering if in your research you've come across anything that might be usable for counting puzzle pieces? Pretty sure it would need an AI component to adjust to the various sizes and shapes of different brands as well as the tendency for pieces to stick together. . . any thoughts, ideas, advice would be appreciated. Thanks for being a counting enthusiast and sharing your knowledge!

What if you add a motor that will slowly move the separator when no parts have been counted within a certain time. Maybe that can solve the problem with it getting stuck, just a random thought
Or just reverse the turntable for a second, that would fix most jams.
That angular piece for separation is truly ingenious. Nice find/build.
Also, designed in Inkscape? I'm quite impressed and cringing at how hard that would be for me to do (as one familiar with a variety of CAD packages)
Also +1 for "corn is gross" - agreed, not a fan of having to scrape nutrients off a cylinder.
Hah. Yeah, designed in inkscape. It's the only middle ground between what I have and what other makerspaces that come and go in my area use.
If you sold this as a kit, the part counter would be counting itself :P

You should instead make it so after some time (idk 15 seconds) of the sensor not sensing any nuts,
The wheel turns backwards for some time (idk 7 seconds)
and the underside of the arm will jostle the nuts a bit then make it turn forwards again,
And You shouldnt need any additional hardware.

Thanks for sharing your concept to design process. Really amazing. I wonder if using acrylic in place of the wood disk and some of the other wooden components may help with consistency. The paper cover on most acrylic would have I thing about the same amount of friction as wood. Or perhaps using masking tape. Anyways... a wonderful project.

Wow the inductive proximity sensor is so expensive in the U.S. Perhaps with the disc problem you could use a thicker piece of plexi glass?

No, sorry. It's too involved with little potential for high sales to bring parts costs down.
What motor did you use?
Nema 17 stepper motors. Commonly used in 3D printers. You can find them on ebay from china for about €5 each. Note that there are two motors: one motor that drives the turntable and one motor that turns the spindle with the cups in it below.

And how does it do with odd shaped parts? Like short stocky screws?
if they are very close to a 1:1 ratio of width to length it might work. I have not tried it with short stocky screws. anything that isnt short and stocky needs a different mechanical sort.
sadly i never made a kit. It's just a bit daunting and the machine is too nuanced to provide a kit and hope that builders follow the mechanical tolerance to achieve what's promised in the video.
The problem with these machines is that you really do need 99% accuracy to use them in production, missing components for 1 customer of every 100 is significant
true. however this machine over counts when it comes accuracy error. so it's more like a 1% loss in inventory costs. not a better, just different.
