Dedicated in 1971, the Rothko Chapel serves as a global destination for all faiths, a beloved sanctuary for contemplation housing 14 site-specific paintings by Mark Rothko. This autumn, following a year-and-a-half-long restoration to bring the space more in line with Rothko's original vision, the chapel reopened to the public. Join critic, Professor Shahidha Bari, in conversation with custodian of the Rothko legacy, Christopher Rothko, international curator, critic and art writer, Dr David Anfam, and Sotheby’s Chairman Lisa Dennison, to honour the Rothko Chapel's 50 years as a landmark of modern sacred art.

Just wonderful to listen to people with so much knowledge. I know very little about art but I love the Rothko paintings at Tate Modern. Thank you.
I'm a very traditional Artist. My heroes are Klimt, O'Keefe, Hokusai, Monet - you get the idea. Rothko should be someone I'd automatically be contemptuous of. He isn't. I am in awe of his perseverance, of his dedication to his Art, of his need to continue exploring possibilities. When people say anyone could do what he did, I think they've no idea how much work goes into creating and painting works as large as a garage door. The sheer labor required is incredible.
So illuminating and insightful to have these marvelous insights, especially from the amazing David Anfam! Also nice to see that tiny painting of mine in the upper right of the frame. Ha! Bravo! Thank you all!

The architecture is inspiring. The large fountain ⛲ outside is fascinating m. Visually stunning. . but inside it's a stunning vision of the inoculus Abyss

I've been to the Rothko Chapel a few times. I love Rothko. Perhaps my favorite painting is a dark purple plum painting, once owned by the minimalist Italian collector, Giuseppe Panza, now owned by MOCA in Los Angeles. I'm also a painter and I'm very sensitive to how paintings are constructed. I mention this because I am disappointed with the paintings hanging in the Rothko chapel. I don't believe the quality of the work is Rothko's best. For instance, Rothko used masking tape to make the edges on these paintings, quite different from the floating feathery rectangles of color in his earlier work. Rothko painted over the masking tape and then removed the masking tape, leaving raised edges and paint leakage under the tape. For all of Rothko's "spirituality," these paintings are decidedly material in nature, betraying their inferior construction. Furthermore, the paint surfaces are blotchy and uneven due to irreversible mold growth in the paint, which is said to contain animal proteins. What Rothko's paintings looked like before the mold damage? We'll never know. The Rothko Chapel is a sad failure, a noble exercise with mediocre results. Rothko's pulsing hum replaced by dull materiality.

Where do you live? There are good Rothko's and there are great Rothko's. Seek out the very best and you'll be rewarded.

Rothko was a complete pretentious bore. His work has no spirituality. He made paintings for a restaurant. His work is void of any interest, and likely to have been painted by others.

@@reuben8912 Excuse me i know more about art than you do, if you did know anything about art, you would know Rothko's paintings were made for the marketplace. I have seen lots of his paintings, they look like mass produced objects and are dull.

I just visited. When I walked in my thought was what you folks just wrote. Then it crossed my mind that it was like the original Barnes Museum, poorly lit and you needed to let your eyes adjust. After 20 minutes of hanging out the paintings started to show color, purple in particular but also shades of black. It was an amazing experience. The paintings came to life! I would suggest you try again
this chapel remains an unmitigated selfconcsious architectural disaster - especially after references to italy... these entrances, these angels, these roofs...
