However, the injury was very real and she changed her routine as a result. No handstand mount, no back handsprings, etc. She used primarily aerials and added a second back tuck in succession to add difficulty. She only placed her bad hand on the beam for a back walkover and the dismount. Very courageous perf
She was brought from the hospital to help the Romanian team...On the first apparatus, UB, she tried to compete but gave up, scoring 0.00. On the second apparatus, Emilia Eberle fell from the beam, and Nadia had to do something to score back precious points. And she did it... a 9.95 and a gold medal for the Romanian team. After winning the gold, she was immediately brought back to hospital and could not partecipate in the BB final later on.
Bloody incredible; she did this all on one hand; she kept her weight off her infected sore hand so basically she did the two handed skills with one hand! Nadia was amazing and will always be my favourite gymnast of all time.
there is not ONE skill in this routine that she did without that hand that should have been done with that hand. She had a couple no handed skills but that's how they are DONE.

She did, she won it for the team. They needed 9.9 to win with one performance left, against orders Nadia said she wanted to compete for the team. So, if she didn't score better than 9.9, they wouldn't have won the team event. True champion!

And just for the record: Nadia got a bad intestinal infection in Mexico (where the Romanian team spent the weeks prior to the World Champioships) and lost a lot of weight. That is why she was more susceptible to the infection in her wrist. This is all in her two autobiographical books.

Yes, that's true! Nadia's score at beam was crucial since an unexpected fall happened at the beam from a team mate. The girls were just wonderful defeating USSR team, I think, for the first time. Nadia was in such a good shape, what a sad story, after all. I still regret she couldn't compete as she was leading the competition when she had to withdraw.
She should've won the 1980 Olympics but they were in Moscow and they underscored her final beam routine. Bella said it was the biggest injustice in gymnastics history.

It's a little dramatic to suggest she was driven directly to the competition from the hospital, but the physical limitation was clearly real and she could do bars at all, generally her favorite event. You'll notice she put her hand down only for the back walkover and dismount.

It was a great routine, she was so skinny there. It's incredible what she was able to do with such a bad wrist infection :(
