  • tap follower is a great beginner lathe project.
With it’s spring loaded tip. The tap follower will aide in tapping straight.
Two unique features make this tap follower, different from all the other ones I have every seen.
First it is made from hex stock, this will stop it from roll on the floor. I used aluminum because that is what was on hand and it is easy to machine. You could use stainless steel or mild steel.
Second is grooves 1/4” apart, this will help you see how deep your are tapping.
Once built you can use it on a lathe, drill press and milling machine

    Hello from Norway.
Nice job. Will do the same (but in Metric :-). Carl

It was built with the Materials I had on hand. I turn a half inch diameter to fit into a half inch Collett in my milling machine. I don’t know what size materials you would have in metric. Where are you going to use it in a lathe or in a mill? Just take the concept and make it your own. With what you have on hand. Or what you have access to. Great video. I am surprised you didn't engine turn the outside. If I make one I think I will polish it with some Scotch-Brite.

The flats on the hexes were kind of too small or I would’ve engine turn them. I really like engine turning it makes it look like a 60s British sports car dashboard.
