Thank you Marina. This is exactly my comeback for everyone who feels that indigenous people should have got over their trauma by this time. Money cannot fix trauma. Time cannot necessarily fix trauma. What happened to them was a nightmare. If you read the code of ethics of the indigenous people, you'll realise that they were very spiritual, very accommodating, very generous and that was their undoing. Thank you for bringing this to our community and I hope that we adapt our attitude toward and concerning these great people.
Thanks for making this video and calling out our own biases. I work with an indigenous organization here in Saskatoon and my first hand experience working with them is COMPLETELY different from the narrative handed down when I got here newly...I mean, these people are so nice and welcoming sometimes to a fault. The ones in corporate are so intelligent, hardworking that sometimes I even wonder if they're the indigenous people talk about...we need to do better and erase the stereotypes
I first learnt about the history of the indigenous people when i took a course on indigenous studies at Usask. I began to wish every immigrant would take that course too. I did that blanket exercise too and tears flowed freely in class that day. Their story reminds me of the slave trade era in the Benin kingdom. The Europeans first came as traders, later brought education and religion and then not before long, took over their land and almost erased their identity. Canada has the cleanest water supply in the World, until you get to the Indigenous settlements where water advisory is issued every now and then. It's so sad 😢.
I attended the Pow Wow event to celebrate Truth and Reconciliation, this year and it was really emotional when i saw actual survivors of the residential schools come out. Seeing them in flesh and blood just gave it a whole new meaning for me. Thanks for sharing this
Well done! I live in Saskatoon and many of in our immigrant community are ignorant about the history of the land. I hope this video will help dispel the false bias of the indigenous people
Overrepresentation of Indigenous Children in care through the Ministry of Social Services is, in my opinion, informal form of residential schools. Giving money to them instead of services is a strategy to keep them suppressed. At the end of the day, d money goes back into the mainstream canadian treasury, and d cycle continues. In my work with Indigenous people, they just want to be loved and not judged but struggle with trust, which is understandable. To acknowledge that they are yet to gain independence and may never gain it is enough trauma on it's own. It is well. Thanks for speaking on this. ❤
As a South African now living in Canada. These are all the questions I asked when I arrived in Canada and could not see an indigenous person for a whole month after arriving here. And I saw how they were eradicated and almost became extinct. We all need to empathize and learn the true history of the lands we occupy. The colonizer is very good at telling stories that make themselves sleep better at night. Thank you for this video.
Welcome back Marina. I actually attended an in-person webinar hosted by indigenous peoples and even though I had attended a similar event before, my eyes welled up in tears. Their stories are very sad.😔
It takes a great deal of courage to make a video speaking on a subject that most immigrants would often tip-toe around even when they are well-informed about the history of their host.
This misinformation has to be spoken about. Well done Marina. Thankfully I work with an organization that is committed to Truth and Reconciliation. 4 Seasons of Reconcilation is a great course to learn about Truth and Reconcilation and it opened my eyes to a whole lot of things. The sad truth is that Canada is not doing enough to honour the 94 Call to Action of the Truth and Reconcilation Commission because I have witness first hand the ineqaulities that still exists in the Indigenous communities where I work. Lack of housing, healthcare, inaccessible roads, lack of portable water and a whole lot more that still exists in 2024.
The same we had and still having in Africa. Religions continue that. They succeeded coz now we think like them, do things like them, worship their god and having their names
Exactly! In the same way some of our chiefs were 'active' participants, it applies to them too. Sometimes, being very nice is same as being naive. You sign or thumbprint some papers you think you understand (when you actually don't due to deceit and savviness). Our education system gets us schooled but not educated, that's why we are still in their grasp fully.
I remember meeting an indigenous woman, and I told her I was from Nigeria,Africa. She smiled and said, "They stole your land the way they stole our land. We are brothers and sisters. " That's when I got curious. I never feel afraid around them anymore. As new immigrants, please be curious and ask questions. Little history: a few nations had female chiefs, and the Europeans couldn't manipulate them. They convinced the men to force the female chiefs out.
Thanks for this video. Very educative. Not in Canada yet, will love to someday. So I will do well to know more about what you have said. Thanks again 👏🏼
Wonderful content as always. The impact of the topic of this discourse is so far-reaching that putting oneself in the shoes of our indigenous brothers and sisters makes ones heart to tremble. Yet, people still feel there are ways in which one should nurse one's pains. It is well.
Thanknyou so much my darling sis for sharing. My visit to Wanuskewin Heritage Museum is one of my most enlightening experience about understanding the rich culture of the Indigenous people of Canada. I will highly recommend that people hould visit that site and be educated and appreciate why *The truth and reconciliation* important.
Lol I work as a SM designer for an immigration firm and i do this particular Indigenous Orange shirt thingy post but never really understood what it's all about since all this while😂😂 Thank you for exposing us to this knowledge Marina
Thanks .Marian for informative info. I just like sass. But tell me which rural community are easy rosette to in terms of weather , cost of living to fresh immigrant from Africa n kenya to specific
Got this history from my professor in my program in social works, Humber has a 1hr reconciliation program every 30th September they made me know about the orange shirt.
How can i love this video a thousand times. When i engage in this topic with some immigrants, they say d SW in me has taken over. Coming from an HR, i am so glad and hopeful that it will be received differently. Thanks, Marina, for sharing. ❤❤❤❤
Thanks Marina, this is also the reason stereotyping is never a good path. it's actually a trauma that sticks. I believe our little efforts can represent that piece of puzzle that fixes the picture.
First time commenting, I studied a course in sociology back in U of M, it was about the Inuit people, it’s really disheartening, these people were robbed of their right, their kids were taken away, few that came back found it really difficult to communicate with their families, they developed anxiety, fell into depression and resulted to finding solace in taking alcohol.
Thanks so much Marina for sharing this, the indigenous people are the warmest and homely set of people lve seen around.when l came to canada l thought all whites are the same until l lived with one at my school dorms,l noticed she cleaned, cooked and was so kind and friendly unlike the other whites,it was when we got talking that she told me about the residential schools and what they all went through. She was at that school and was forcefully married to an european man who treated her badly. The Europeans have done alot of bad to different races and the lest we can do is to have empathy and be supportive of people who been through alot.

I totally agree with you. At first, I was misinformed, but after working with rhem for 3 years, OMG! they are so friendly.
I agree!!! Super amazing people.
100% agree. The stories are so different from who they are as a people. So different!

Very insightful and good job madame Marina Esiri.

Absolutely. If we look around, we will see that there is still so much to be done. True reconciliation begins with truth and justice.

Thank you for this video.
They were all forced out of their land, they didn't give their lands to foreign colonizers
We should live our everyday life in Canada as Truth and Reconciliation Day not just Sept 30th. Thank you Marina.
Welcome back Marina.
I actually attended an in-person webinar hosted by indigenous peoples and even though I had attended a similar event before, my eyes welled up in tears.

Just sad! Just knowing that there are still people in Canada who don't have access to clean drinking water is mind-boggling.
It takes a great deal of courage to make a video speaking on a subject that most immigrants would often tip-toe around even when they are well-informed about the history of their host.

Wow. Thank you so much for enlightening us. I would have never imagined that they went through all of this. Very traumatizing experience
Thanks for listening

Absolutely 💯
Thanks for this video, Marina...
The elders that share the history are called knowledge keepers.
That's correct. Thank you 😊

I have taken a course on indigenous people in Canada on the Google certification courses. They are highly spiritual people.
