Lovely ted talk you shared, i can imagine how those scenerios were for you growing up. For me have always loved my name from childhood. I carry the name with pride. My parents gave me yoruba names and native name but baptism obviously i was given an English name, but i prefer both my native and yoruba names. You hardly hear me tell people my english name except for bank reasons and my certification which is what you find on my birthday certificate. Other than that, i dont bother how my name even my surname was pronounced especially in secondary school. I wear my name Omolara with confidence...
I have been waiting to see you upload this video😅 wow! My name is also Marina and when I tell you that a lot of trauma comes with bearing and answering this name. I also have a French background reason I was named Marina, honestly everything you’ve said I can relate and I have experienced even worse.😢 growing up in Lagos Nigeria was not funny 😂. I have till date different versions on my name Marina. Marina Lagos Island, Marina CMS, Marina Eko idumota and many more. Some people will go as far as telling me that I came from the Marine Kingdom😢😅 I have sat my parents down many times to cry and questioned them on why they decided to give that name and my dad will always say that it is a French name and he doesn’t see any faults in the name. I am very emotional right now listening to all you’ve said and I cannot but say Thank You Marina! But then how many people do you want to start telling the meaning and why they should not see it as a bad name. Honestly it is draining and traumatizing 😢 I had to give myself another first name just so I could fit in and not get judged but deep down I love my Marina so much! 😂
I never thought of your name being odd. It could have been Sun Beam or Morning Flower or Star Light. These names of the 60s would keep a boy fighting his whole school life.
Lovely story Marina, I'm one of your favorite viewers, it's always interesting hearing your sweet voice , this is Mary from way back Benin, COH precisely, OK let me share a little of my story, actually my dad named me Mary, and according to what I was told he named me after his late 1st wife who was called Mary Magdalene, along the line I got the find out Mary means bitterness, and growing up alot of people told me to change my name, some even told me to change it to merry which means happiness, I contemplated that but of course just like you said I wasn't in the capacity to have a change of name all by myself, at some point when jamb started jamming me and when it seems like things were not going as I planned and wanted I started having a feeling like maybe it's the name, it's bitterness and that's what is affecting me, later I decided to take and believe that my own Mary contrary to what others think or say means sweetness and not bitterness and the things that didn't go well were just part of life, that's history now cos I don't feel that way anymore, I love my life and love my name, nice 1 Marina, more greeze to your elbow ❤❤❤
It’s the way you own English language for me🥰🥰🥰. Your story time is quite interesting and to say the list, I love your name “marina”and love the way you pronounce it even more…
