How to gesso hardboard for oil painting

Hardboard surfaces make a permanent support for oil painting. It is a much cheaper alternative to stretched canvas, and the gesso can be applied different ways to create the type of surface the artist would like to paint. It can be sanded smooth, and multiple coats can be applied. It dries quickly, and will last longer than you and I will be around.
