NO ICE....After the repair man had been out twice and not fixed my ice maker I decided to figure it out myself. No Mr. repair man I didn't put the filter in wrong, it was a design defect that the wires broke from opening and closing the door. Your video gives me the confidence to take care of my home and small repair jobs, while saving money.

Ok so, super gratitude. Feeling clever, might delete later. Headlight socket replacement, in place (tight space) on a 98 Infitniti QX4. After several moments of frustration, this video came through in the clutch. I kept wasting connectors with failed crimps. After watching, I slid a parallel connector onto the car's wire, weaved the wires together ala the solder section, then slid the connector over the wires and crimped with a needle nose pliers adjacent to the wire cutter area which mimics a crimp pretty decent. Electrical tape over the 3 individual wires, then back into the sheath and electrical tape over that. I am please with myself and yall are probably the only people that care LOL. Thank you for reading. I no longer have to pop the hood and jiggle the wire to make my headlight work. PEACE!

Great video! I've never replaced any kind of electrical wiring before, but I just replaced a defrost thermostat in my 20-year-old refrigerator. Thanks to this excellent video, I was able to connect the new thermostat's wires to the refrigerator's wires using a red butt connector and electrical tape.
The main takeaways that I learned are:
    - what a correct crimp looks like (I practiced on the old part several times before I tried it for real)
    - be sure not to strip some of the copper wires (thanks for showing that -- I never would've thought to look)
    - pull on each end to ensure that the wires are secured in the connector
I credit this video for helping a first-timer successfully repair her fridge. Thank you!

just one thing to add regarding heat shrink tubing. There are 2 types, adhesive and non-adhesive. The non-adhesive ones are not suitable for high moisture environments. Moisture will actually wick inside the tubing and corrode the wires quite fast. The adhesive type on the other hand is extremely good for preventing corrosion. They also tend to be double walled and have a 3:1 shrink ratio.

Great video. I was taught to melt a little solder onto the soldering iron tip before placing it under the twisted wires. The little molten solder lump greatly increases the conduction of heat from the tip to the joint. With the tip contacting the underside of the joint, the rising heat will rapidly heat the whole joint. Then, add your rosin-core solder to the top. It will melt right into the hot joint almost immediately.

One thing i always do which i never see videos covering is after twisting the wires together prior is brushing a little flux on them before sliding the connector over, when you do this the solder spreads through and saturates the connection much much better ^^

A couple of years ago I got a $25 ratchetting crimp tool from Amazon. Success rate is much better now but ... I even screw that up sometimes. I highly recommend a ratchetting crimp tool if you're going to be doing more than 10-20 connectors.

Aircraft mechanic and yes technically we use the heat shrink solder sleeves but only for attaching a wire to the shielding to ground it for protecting data wire from electrical interference. Splicing of wires is done using what are called environmental splices or brand name of RayChem splices. They consist of two pieces, a metal tube with a center stop like a basic butt splice, and a special heat shrink tube like that of a solder sleeve but without the solder that melts at a very high temperature. The reason we avoid using solder is while strong, areas of high vibration cause the strands to break at the edges of the rigid solder connection

Thanks for the tip on soldering with the mentioning of cold soldering. I would have never thought to let the tip heat the wires then let the solder melt from touching the wires with it. I’m going to do this right now :)

Thanks man! If I could give you two thumbs up I would. I'd never heard of the solder seal wire connections. I have a short in my car's rear camera wiring in the trunk. I was about to start digging up my solder gun dreading the process while sitting in the trunk my car since I can't remove the wiring harness. While refreshing myself on what little solder experience I had I watched your video. To Amazon I went since the local auto stores did not have them.

Really quite a good information presentation. A nice example was showing the wire clothing burn-through with the lighter. What an easy way to get shard-to-find short. Well done.

I'll solder the splice, smear it with some hot glue, slide a piece of heat shrink tubing over it, then set it with a heat gun. It's very secure and completely waterproof. It's what I use for my boat's electrical connections. Takes a bit longer than crimps but it's cheaper than the crimp with hot glue and solder built in.

    • @tchevrier
      @tchevrier 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Do you know you can buy adhesive heat shrink tubing. It is basically heat shrink with the hot glue already inside. Works exactly the same as what you described without the additional step.

@@tchevrier Thanks for the info. Hard to find that here. And I don't need it all the time. So I "McGuyver" it with hot glue. Living in Hawaii has its perks. But lots of downsides when it comes to sources of materials.

Crimping for me. It requires no electricity, with the right tools the connection is exactly the same quality every time and you don't ruin your hands. Weaving wires with tape is a nice backup.

  • @richardstewart6900

Thanks! I wanted to extend the clip leads on my car battery charger, so used the inter-weave method to splice on the new lengths. It worked, but the main problem was my soldering irons are so old that it must have taken 4 - 5 minutes to start heating the wire & melt the solder. Trying to hold the tip steady against the joint that long meant it pushed it a few times and some of the strands started to splay out, leaving UGLY joints! I reckon I need a new/faster iron!
The other thing I realised is that I'd trimmed both sets of wires to the same length, meaning the joints were adjacent with a risk of touching if the heat-shrink wore through. The joints are fine but I may redo them sometime and offset them a bit.

Have seen a lot of crimp vs solder arguments lately. Still not convinced crimping is better, quicker sure, but I've never had a soldered connection fail on me. Not sure those heatshrink solders would be as strong .

I recently bought a Haisstronica self-soldering connectors kit but do not like the connectors. Perhaps I used too much heat but the plastic melted before the solder and developed holes. I was using the smallest connectors. I tried a number of times, always with the same results. I went back to using my old faithful of soldering and using marine heat shrink tubing.

Which butt connector works best for installing a CB Radio into a commercial vehicle? I already have the CB wires in the compartment however the piece that plugs into the adapter was removed by someone who used to have that truck prior to me. I can't find an adapter piece to connect to it. And I was told by someone I should just cut it off and hardwire the CB Radio wires to the existing wires.

The pre-soldered shrink tube connectors are very easy to use.
Sadly though the ones I've tried didn't have enough solder to thoroughly soak the connection. Maybe they were too cheap.
Unisolated shear-bolt connectors work great. Slide over shrink tube. Tighten the connector until bolt shears off and isolate with shrink tube.
