Had my share of living in a moving home! Worked hard to get my house 🏡 jus put a 2” lift on my Jeep Grand Cherokee now the tires don’t rub when I turn! Try replacing a crankshift position sensor on the inlines the first time jus smh on the jeep grand cherokees 2000 models! Next is to get my 2006 eclipse the orange metallic color started! Then my 1993 Mazda mx-6 to run better! Then my 58 Apache to run! Then my 91 Nissan Sentra to run! Then my 2004 Mazda mpv transmission to work! I got my work cut out for me! Being a professional mechanic technician these won’t be the last vehicles to work on! I’ve fixed up some classics in my time! As well as ordinary work cars and trucks and vans! Now I have to get my house ready for sale! Rich and friends are an inspiration to watching your show! When I’m burned out from my mechanic work your show motivates me to keep going! I’m a car junky! Jus going to the junk yard is like going to the mall for me ….sometimes! Sometimes cus the junk yard won’t have what your interested in finding! Out w the old in w the new so the junk yard can have space for the next junk vehicles sucks when the vehicle you remember to go back to is gone! What are my plans for the future to? Yah world peace and doing more real estate! Sold a handful of houses in my days! I plan to start making multiple Apache trucks in fiber glass on donor frames welding is fun todo! @RichRebuilds please note that this silicone stuff you used for caulking the vent was technically the total wrong stuff.
At home in your bathroom the temperature differences summer to winter are not big. But parking the van in the summer sun and driving through winter temeratures requires a stuff that is designed for that and will not crack and leaking.
The internet is full of camper van owners crying over leaks because they made it wrong. Do not make the same mistake Leena will have to regretting, please.

Hey rich throw in a multifuntion steering wheel and the high-spec tachometer (both are plug and play no coding needed) and install an android headunit with an usb to hdmi Adapter so she can watch-tv or music-vids and use the stereo of the van (wich needs to be retrofitted and upgraded) 👌🤔
Ultimate Rich move would be to only allow videos from this channel to play on that system.
Great idea though since the van has all the wiring and whatnot already in it.

You can buy “acoustic “ sound deadening windscreens as an option for a lot of models. Just looked it up, not the sprinter though :(
That's crazy the amount of work done to the van so far. Awesome video.
Closed cell spray foam is the way to go. Keeps the moisture out. You can buy 600sq foot cans at Lowes or Homedepot and do it without a professional company. Works way better than any other insualation and the biggest problem, you won't have mold growing on the other side. OH and it actually has a real R value unlike the reflectix crap.

Yeah so many people use refelectix the wrong way, your getting a small thermal break that’s it. it ain’t insulation people but it does reflect ;)
The silver tape is not for heat/cold, it adds mass to the thin metal to absorb resonance aka sound deadening. If you've ever driven in the back of van you will know that sound the bare metal makes is stupid loud. Adding the B-quiet stuff makes the panels vibrate less and in turn lowers the noise levels.

Gotta love rust repair! "Hey, it's a tiny hole. We'll be done by lunch time." Two days later you have chased that rust hole with the welder half way to the other side of the car and you're looking for two more panels to completely replace because you have discovered more rust under paint.
Good job on that patch panel though. Wasn't expecting it to be contoured to match the floor, but makes sense with how large it ended up being. Looks good!
Hey Uncle Rich, that partition wasn't for privacy, it's to keep the cheap ass cabinets and all your pots and pans taking your head off when you get into a crash.

This is sound deadening insulation, not thermal.
@@Johnsmith69448 Its actually about both (if you want a van that is more comfortable in the mornings or isnt an easy bake oven). If i'm not mistaken about this product, this is glorified bubble wrap (which has ok thermals, if you dont compress the air out of the sheeting). The actual sound isolation this offers is limited and something you dont see recording studios using (if it was such a great material because of volume saving or price; more studios would use this to stop low frequencies than more costly approaches (double walls / weighty materials))
Usually the cheapest sound material are shipping blankets or nonvibrating quality plywood (providing the greatest density for cheap construction). That is if you care about trying to stop low frequencies.
If you place flush (to your wall) 2 ply plastic sheeting, that does nothing to deaden any significant frequencies (high or low).
I can get looking at that partition and going "Sure, that's nice for a camper", but I can also see "Hey, this curtain costs $5 and I don't have to carry 50 pounds of plywood and hardware for it"

But keep in mind :
- Sound deadening is only useful when driving. It deads the vibrations and that’s it. It is not an acoustic insulation like it could pretend to be (like acoustic needs for living)
- Floor insulation is so far the less important part of an insulation.
The most important are the roof and walls (in the summer you need to protect from the sun, and during the winter you need to keep the warmness inside)

I watch a lot of car audio videos, and you know I'm actually really impressed by how you guys did the sound deadening along with also doing thermal Insulation at the same time. very cool guys and thanks for showing us that.
I did have a question about the solar panels and I know the panels that you're putting on there are very efficient and probably last a long time, however I was wondering about the ones that you can physically attached to the body that are somewhat semi-flexible and wood mold to the surface of the slats up on top of the roof.
I was thinking about making my own or at the very least getting the flexible style panels that roll or the ones where you were able to mold them at least closely to the shape of the ceiling of the van.
I order myself some solar panels from eBay and was going to do the same thing but I realized that I can't use the regular polycrystalline style without them cracking so I was thinking about getting some small flexible panels that are thin enough to go in between the slats that way it looks like it was integrated within the body.
there's a lot of surface area up there and sit sits on top of the roof more than likely it'll never be messed with so it's something I was thinking about doing this summer

How far of a gap can you weld shut when just inserting a piece like that? Me (having no idea about welding) would have made the piece bigger than the hole to make a seam.
@@whuzzzup typically yes you want the fit to be just right so there is no gap but iv heard of pipe fitter guys fill as much as a 3/4 gap. In a situation like this where it’s a light gauge and mostly flush with a few small gap areas its no problem especially when your not even gonna see it

True that, especially in work vans. My dad used to keep copper pipes on top of his shelf, little did he know his partition didn’t cover the top angle. Copper pipe missed his head and broke the windshield.

Changed their mind in favor of cost and time savings? I suspect they are going to put flooring atop the base floor. I'm hoping indoor/ outdoor carpeting.
I was missing every 10mm socket in my set - 1/4 drive and deep, 3/8 drive and deep, and 1/2 drive. I went to home depot and bought replacements. Now every time I turn around there are 10mm sockets. I even used a craftsman 10mm socket and I've never had a craftsman socket set.

Just FYI to viewers who actually work on stuff, steel from a steel supplier costs a tiny fraction of the amount that it does from a box store. I pay less for a 4 foot by 8 foot piece than I would for a square foot at HD. Smaller amounts are so cheap it will cost more in gas to go pick it up. Most towns have a steel supplier. A town of 50k might have two. I've restored a dozen 50's truck and only use steel patch panels made from mild steel. Saves hundreds to thousands on a restore.
That rich hub gave me a mini heart attack bc my phone was at full volume and everyone was around. LOL
Those Merc and Chrysler versions vans are RUST buckets.
You definitely want to rust proof the doors (from the inside) and all the underside with a proper sprayed oily product. A must on those !
The tires are truck rated i.e. for heavy loads. They probably are rock hard. Softer tires would be a great improvement, comfort wise.

That acoustic insulation is nice, but you still need the thick thermal insulation to isolate from the cold & hot. Also an insulated cover for the vent would be good.

Yeah, I'm of the faction who feel he should have kept the partition in.
It isn't just about the privacy and boondocking incognito, it's also about safety.
Not everything in the back of that van is going to be anchored, so anything set unsecured becomes a ballistic wrecking ball. And if she's in a decent front end collision, or God forbid, she rolls it, even much of the anchored stuff can break loose and come up into the front of the van to beat the hell out of her in this already traumatic moment.
That partition was quite robust too... it not only acted as an effective bulkhead, but even added a little extra structural integrity with side collisions or rolls.
That baddass partition is one of the big advantages of van-lifing an industrial grade cargo van. She's so much safer while driving with that door closed.
More injuries and casualties in van wrecks are by stuff slamming into the driver inside the vehicle from behind.
Rich shoulda left it in.
And it also was a great insulatory barrier. Designed for the reverse actually... to keep the heat and cooling from the small climate control system in the cab for driver and passenger since the cargo doesn't typically care. So when heating or cooling the living space, it's a big help to keep it in the back of the van, since al the glass up front will be the biggest area for loss.
All that work insulating the floors and skin of the cargo area, and gonna hang a curtain for the front. A curtain doesn't contain anything.

I think I forgot to comment on that, but my reasoning for keeping that partition in would be isolation.... the cab is the hardest part of the vehicle to keep in temperature.

That hole was so small, I'm pretty sure fixing it with a polyurethane caulking like SikaFlex would've been better than cutting out a bigger hole and welding a plate in.🤔😒

OMG! RICH! do you not also understand that the partition keeps things from hitting you while you’re driving if you have to make an emergency stop or someone hit you. I have a partition in my van. And I wish the door slid, it opens. I don’t sleep in my van now, but I slept in my van before. My van has no markings. And I look like one however many expediters in the country. I also set up my van to expedite, so it has a wooden floor with a E track, E track on the walls, no insulation, because it’s a work van and not a camper van.
