    It was a real quick video, but enough to make my front up-shifter work again. Thanks a lot for your very clear and instructive video..

    Thanks Bike Teacher, I had a Free Spirit (Old SEARS bike) with circa ‘92-94 Alivio shifters in the shop. It’s back on the road thanks to this video!

    Thank you, very helpful! Underscoring the importance of wearing safety glass while doing this, they performed their function well preventing injury while I did this.

    Great video! For me and a shimano 300 exage shifter from the 90s I had to: remove from handlebar, unscrew cap like on this vid, submerge in warm (40 ish ° celsius) waterand then spray with wd40. *But* the pawls started engaging by themselves once I re-assembled the thing. What is mentioned in this vid as the possibility of tightening/loosening of the nut seen on top is true: top down pressure on the system alters its functioning by aligning everything up, however, this happens upon re-assembly even without manipulating these nuts (pun not intended). So bear this in mind while you overhaul your shifters... in spite of being 30 odd years now, they are built so well that they should work as well as new! Ride what you have and enjoy!!

      Well said, you will only see vintage Shimano out there. Sram came to the party late. Thanks, for watching.

    Thank you so much. I could fix both my Deore 2005 trigger shifters and they are now ready for another few years. This gearing is sooo good and lasts forever ! (Laurent from France)

    I have an older GT that has a uni-shock for my front forks. My rear shifter feels totally disconnected but I gave the WD a try. Of course, I live with Murphy's Law, where nothing goes right.
    It didn't work unfortunately, so I decided to remove the main bolt so I could open it and take a look inside. The bolt loosened and that's about it. It just turns, like it's stripped. I have no idea what to do with it.
    I can still ride it as my front shifter works like it always did, but I'm stuck with 3 gears. I keep my things like bikes very clean and this bike has actually sat in my basement for a couple of years, so it's in really good shape. Except for that stupid shifter.

    I service my shifters at least one or twise every year, I use Sram butter, I currently use XTR M9000 trigger shifter, I never had issues, but I service often enough.

    It was easier than he said I didn't have to cut no cable. I removed the cap sprayed some solvent in it. It's working pretty good now thank you.

    How about the middle 'cog wheel/rather thing' not snapping back? if I shift upwards, everything clicks no problem, then on the way down, the first three gears don't click/snap back at all, then from the 4th gear down the snapping/clicking returns. What could I do? it's been driving me insane for days now

    Once I’ve cleaned it out with WD40 could I use a silicone grease or PTFE grease to keep the shifter lubed?

    • @BikeTeacher
      @BikeTeacher  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes any lubricant that can be sprayed out of a can would help.

    I have a Head bicycle and don't know how to take off the casing. It is totally different than the your trigger shifter. How can i find out how to operate on it?

      Sorry for the late reply, I would need to see it. Can you shove te straw in a crack to fill it with wd- 40?

    Can brake cleaner be used to clean the gear shifter ?

    • @BikeTeacher
      @BikeTeacher  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am not sure if it is to strong the parts inside the shifter. But if you are trying to get a few more miles or months out of a very tired shifter, knowing you will need to get a replacement. The I would go for it if nothing else is working. That would be a Hale Mary decision for me.

    I have to push the trigger more than usual after the click when downshifting, is there a fix for that? is something worn and doesn't pull the cable as much as when it was new? the indexing is good but I have to pull harder on the cable for it to shift which risks me shifting two gears when I only want to switch one

    • @BikeTeacher
      @BikeTeacher  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I slight adjustment on tension may be needed. Center clockwise on the barrel adjuster. 1/4 turn. If that does nor work, try wd-40, and then some lube. Clicks should louder and clearer enhancing the shift. Or the chain and or gears are wearing the grooves (ramps) or cutouts on the sides of the gears are worn and unable to assist the chain to jump onto the next gear. This can happen on the front chainrings and rear cassette. Very hard to see this by eye. The best way I can identify a worn gear(s) is to replace the chain (if needed) and test ride each gear under pressure, like a hill, or a sprint like conditions. I will often drag my brakes and apply heavy amounts of pedal pressure to the cranks on a flat street. I am anticipating the chain to stay on that chosen gear but the chain will want to lift up and off the teeth and jump a couple of teeth and fall back on the gear. This will be felt in the in the cranks like an abrupt slip and jerk feeling. It can be disturbing if standing up on the pedals.

      @@BikeTeacher new chain and gears I had to tension the cable very slightly and it's better now, but I'm pretty sure it's because of worn hinge of the derailleur and maybe worn ratchets of the shifter
