I had heard of this chain growing up in the 50s, 60s. My daddy had worked in the 3 Cs after a year or so of college his family could no longer afford .He worked all over his home state of West Virginia , mainly planting trees and building state parks in 1933 - 4.He loved it and heard this mountain tall tale and knew it was a hoax ! It was funny but well - meant. ( Years later in 1976 , on a family trip back home , I took what was probably the best picture of my daddy .He was standing on a wooden " pier " on a trail pointing to the huge trees over Blackwater Falls in the park he had helped build and the trees he had helped plant.) A great West - by - God Virginian ! ---- Sharon in South Florida, but always a West Virginian too.

Beautiful area! We went there several years ago and loved it. We went back last fall but couldn’t remember how to get back up there. We still took a nice walk that day and believe me I could tell the difference in the years prior. I had to stop and break a few times the last time. But it’s definitely worth seeing. Good video Shane ❤
I went there in 2009, after a severe thunderstorm had gone through the night before. To add to the festivities we were climbing through branches of downed trees. Going to the rock isn't bad, but man! that return hike is a killer! On one of the stair risers someone had painted "R U tired yet?".
lol “r u tired yet?” Is the most relatable thing I would have seen on the trip. Shew, sneaky tough coming up but I can’t imagine having to deal with downed branches too, lawdy
Took a trip there from Covington, ky back in the early eighties. The drive up to the chain sparked a concern for on the way down. The road has a steep incline so your brakes better be good on the way down. Very beautiful scenery and folks, it’s a long way down as you look over Pineville. I could see how an avalanche of trees would be catastrophic if the boulder ever broke from the chain. The chain has thick large loops so don’t think they cut any corners securing the rock. Very cool and interesting place to visit.
Hi! Shane. Please be careful in areas such as you are in Pineville. I have heard from reliable sources that this area has many copperheads. I pray that you are not overheated. Hopefully, you took some water or Gatorade. Recently, the heat index in my area has been to over 100 degrees. I have driven through Pineville, but never stopped. It looks like a very interesting place to visit. Thank you for a piece of KY history.. My best to Melody and the family.
wow that was a lot for them to go through for a hoax! BTW I can not imagine climbing that like you did! Even when I was younger (WAY younger lol) I couldn't have done that.. or don't think so anyway. I did hike down and up a very steep make shift stairway in the mountains decades ago and thought I'd never get back up. That is a heck of a tough work out! Be careful on any further endeavors like that. It was a great video and so gorgeous up there! Take care of yourself and fam! :)
Yeah for some reason I just thought it was an overlook and not any type of hike. Once I’d invested all the time in the drive I felt committed lol. Great view though.
And a hoax that is beneficial to tourism 😅 Here in Switzerland, one can find a lot of secured rock faces to prevent rockfalls and it (of course) looks nothing like anchoring it with a single heavy chain to some other rock. Its more like wrapping it in a tight mesh of half inch thick steel cables, which looks really terrible but also conveys the urgency of the measure.
@@DugrozReports it is a Huge Rock that would take down More Rocks with it but it’s bolted to another huge Boulder.
