It's quite clever for an atrocious "hater of all that lives" to be killed by a Tonberry, considering that their main gimmick is that they avenge the deaths of other creatures, getting stronger the more enemies you have killed (which in a game like Final Fantasy, is likely to be a lot). It's literally a DPS check. If you don't have the; levels, gear, abilities and proper team set up... you can't win. The only way to 'brute force' it is to have at least two of those so stupidly over-grinded that nothing else is a challenge normally. I was lucky enough that when I fought it, I was actually on par with it so all I had to do was use the offensive spray and go ham.

FF14 tonberries in the wanderers palace dungeon during the scholar job quest are really easy to deal with. The ones in the dungeon for your duty have No HP bar at all. Tho the small ones do and are again pretty easy to get rid of.
The ones in FF13 AND 13-2 are not easy. But wouldn't take longer then 8 ish minutes if you are decently prepared and leveled. (Still be worried of the everybodies grudge that can 1 shot you)

If I remember correctly, you pretty much only find them in the Big Dungeon and some of them are friendly and give you items. And sometimes they just straight up shank you and force you to go back to your last big level in the dungeon, resetting all of your work.
I also feel like they show up in regular encounters as well. Which. Sigh.

In the Final Fantasy games, Tonberries had a large amount of HP that took forever to get through if you weren't prepared properly. They slowly made there way towards you and once in front of you, stab you with the knife, which causes instant death. But the one technique they had that makes everyone frightened of them is called Everyone's Grudge (FF7) or Karma (FF10). That move does 10 damage for every monster that a character has killed. Example: One character has killed 1000 monsters, the technique will do 10000 damage to that character.

@@JordanThomas-iq2kv I might be overselling it a bit. "4X" games are a type of (usually turn-based) strategy game, like Stellaris, Civilization, and so on, where you start with a small and relatively low-tech civilization and grow it into dominance over the continent, planet, galaxy, or whatever setting the game uses. The term stands for "eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, eXterminate": as your growing empire improves its tech, you'll need to find more territory and resources for your people to continue achieving greatness, so you will almost inevitably start having to pick fights with other civs trying to move up on you.
One situation that can happen is that you'll find yourself locked in a long war with a nearby empire whose numbers and tech are roughly on par with yours. That can turn into a meat-grinder pretty quick, since neither side has a decisive advantage - and then seemingly out of nowhere, a third civ that managed to get some sort of boost (no nearby rivals, loads of resources, high population growth, whatever) shows up with numbers and tech light-years beyond the best you or your local enemy have.
The over-selling part comes from the generally slow pace of the game. That scenario above might be the plot of the game, but the gameplay itself is... Well, one friend of mine described it as being a bit like SimCity, but with a couple violent extra layers.

So you destroyed the physical form of ID-F86, then had to snap the beasts out of his control after his spirit tries to take revenge. It seems like we're gonna get the Marx Soul esque rematch via Fecto Soul... And then a magic butterfly swoops in and obliterates him, transforming into Meta Knight's prototype appearance. When it happened in Star Allies, we were caught off guard. But those who played that game dreaded seeing that butterfly again.

Another one from Final Fantasy XIII would be a Behemoth during Titan's Trials. Most behemoths are equivalent to small bosses. However, if you complete all of Titan's other trials, you unlock a special one where he summons a behemoth in your fighting zone. Turns out that's just some bait for Attacus the Soulless, one of the Undying Cieth and one of the few bosses that uses Doom.
EDIT: He casts Doom after 20 minutes have passed, putting a hard time limit on the fight.

    • @cherrydragon3120

Attacus was indeed quite scary when it just 1 SHOTTED the Behemoth King.... wich if you played FF13 and got to chapter 11 where those things roam around the Achylte steppe.... you know they are no joke to fight... to be fair, Attacus is a real challenge with his like 8.4 million ish HP and his 999% stagger bar and if i am correct 99% chain resist. So there is perhaps maybe 1 or 2 times in the entire battle you can manage to stagger him. Try to fight him before you got a max Level party and you might not be able to stagger him at all.
Meaning you won't do for example 6 times the damage you usualy do. But just your regular dmg. Wich ain't fun cuz i think he also halves physical and non elemental magic dmg

    • @azuredragoon2054
      @azuredragoon2054 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@cherrydragon3120 I looked him up for more details. He takes 50% physical damage and only 10% magical damage. He also has 9.1 million HP.
When it comes to physical and magical resistance, those apply regardless of whether there's an element or not tied to the attack. So a Sparkstrike against a target with 50% lightning resist and 50% physical resist will only deal 25% damage.

One of my favorites is in The Wonderful 101, where the Second in Command of GEATHJERK, who is described by the game as being super fearsome and scary, is not only dead by the time you get to him, but was in fact killed by Prince Vorkken, who then proceeds to fight you in one of the most difficult fights in the entire game.

Big Correction on Tiso's whole thing, while you DO see him in the colluseum, you never actually fight him in there, instead if you explore the area where the colluseum is located you find his dead body on the ground, what you guys are talking about with him getting crushed by the Mawlek is what happens in godhome

    • @jakeread9668

No he can show up in the colluseum too if you get there at the right time. If you explore too many other areas first (I think that's the condition but it might be boss related) he dies and you find his body where you saw him. I've seen him in both places in different playthroughs.

Not sure if this would fall under the "scary" category, but I have an example of a bait-and-switch boss. In the original Paper Mario, when you get to Bowser's Castle, you're about to have a rematch with the Koopa Bros., only for Jr. Troopa to come in, one-shot all four of them, and take their place as the boss.

In the last two major Kirby games, we have the final bosses of extra modes being eliminated before you could fight them and replaced by an entirely different boss. In Star Allies, it's Galacta Knight. In Forgotten Land, it's Soul Forgo. The boss that replaces them? The Grim Reaper in butterfly form, Morpho Knight, who came out of hell to tell everyone to stop.

There was also that Contra boss fight from Shattered Soldier. Starts off with a helicopter that not only has been harassing you the whole level, but transforms into a mech to face off against as the boss. Only to have a horrific giant alien turtle boss drop from above and crush the mech. Which only gets worse when you blow up the turtles head, because it then turns around and reveals that its whole backside is a giant fleshy human head.

Fun fact: Zenobia actualy returns in FF13-2 Due to time traveling being a thing and time distortions. Meaning you do fight Zenobia in the sequel. And it ain't an easy fight either :P making The tonberry that slightly scarier of an opponent if you think about it.
Also, attacus the soulles in titans trials... kills your actual opponent in 1 hit and trows it off the cliff.
Yeah, that bastard Kills a behemoth King in 1 hit and then turns towards you.... its lot harder to defeat then the Tonberry too sooooooo yeeaahhhh...

In Ace Combat Zero, there's a special non-canon mission that's just a boss rush with all of the ace squadrons you faced in the game that is unlocked after beating the game with all three mercenary styles.
If you do well enough on the hardest difficulty, Wizard Squadron, one of the hardest ace squadrons in the game, shows up running away from something. It's quickly revealed to be Mobius 1 in an F-22A Raptor, who Ace Combat 4 players recognize as the player character from AC4. He promptly shoots down all of Wizard Squadron before turning those missiles onto you.

Tonberry's are legit probably the scariest enemies in all Final fantasy. The way they look so goofy but just menacingly walk towards your party before just one shotting them with a little kitchen knife like a small green Michael myers.
