  • In today's video EPIC BMX's ( / _epicbmx ) Phu Vu gives us all the information about the worst and most confusing thing in BMX! The bottom bracket! The BMX BB, comes in 4 different styles: American Bottom Bracket, Mid Bottom Bracket, European Bottom Bracket and The Spanish Bottom Bracket (both the internal and external BB's) then each one of those BB's come in 3 different sizes for the inner diameter to suit the BMX cranks, and they are 19mm, 22mm and even 24mm bottom brackets. Hopefully all this info helps to provide you some clarity and piece of mind.

    My theory why the American BB is large is that back in the day most bikes had the one-piece cranks. You had to feed the crank through the BB. Needed the bigger tube. Would never be able to feed a one-piece crank through a Euro BB.

      Definitely possible. not only that, but the bearings were far more crude.

      I've been riding a BMX to get to work for about 20 years and didn't know a single thing about them (apart from some guys can do crazy tricks on them and I can't!) until I started watching this channel. It's been so useful and gave me a lot of confidence to finally learn how to maintain and fix basic issues. At the age of 41 I can now bunny-hop a kerb, tighten up my spokes and swapping the inner-tube after a puncture takes me 5 mins and not an hour. 🤣 Great resource! 🙂

      I got a head scratcher for ya my 2005 haro sx group 1 pro xl has a overdrive size it's an American size but it has threads like a euro. It took me 6 months of looking everyday to find one. The messed up part is I'm limited to 1 style of cranks because of this. Overdrive bb isis drive.

      This will make it easy for phu.
      American and euro are older and from road stuff.
      A Spanish is a European bb shell size but not threaded. A mid is equivalent to a sealed american but without the cup around the bearing.
      And yes I believe the naming is due to the convention of white they were invented or at least where they were the more popular construction style.

    As far as I can tell, innovation in the bicycle industry, as well as others, is not necessarily for improvement. It seems to be largely for the purpose of creating new parts which are incompatible with old bikes, so the old bikes can't be upgraded. To have some of the new parts requires buying a whole new bike.
    The variety in bottom brackets is certainly confusing. What's cool about the American bottom bracket is that adaptors are available to install the other types of cranksets if the traditional one-piece isn't satisfactory.
    Headsets can be puzzling, too. Wouldn't it be nice to have proper parts to install 1 1/8" steerer tubes into vintage bikes without having to improvise with parts that are ALMOST compatible? Imagine nice headset parts to put a modern threadless fork on a Schwinn cruiser from the '60s, or an old school bmx?

  • @BerserkerNick
    @BerserkerNick 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    The external is nice because it makes the bottom bracket wider and does a better job of displacing the stress, this is why it's becoming the standard on mtb

    Excellent video! What I would like to add is that Spanish BBs work perfectly for flatland frames and also with smaller bikes (16" and 18") - they have less overall weight and smaller sizes so smaller sprockets can fit on frames (some flatlanders are using 18T or 20T). So this type of BB also found its calling and the "big" BMX bikes can run with Mid and it is all great like that.

    I just built a Redline bmx and a Lightspeed road bike, after 25 years of not working on bikes. Its even worse than the video portrays- why did they change so much?! The redline was supposed to look old school but had a euro bb and a 17mm crank which I replaced with a 19mm flight crank, but then the drive gear was setup for 22 mm cranks and needed a spacer (which I made using a drill and a file!) and the parts kits dont include that one spacer. The Redline uses a unique sized seat post, and I wanted a layback which simply isnt made. However, old road bikes did use that size and I adapted a weird Japanese road bike post into a layback seat that is actually great. The lightspeed had its own special needs, swapping it over to a sram single speed crank. (there’s also Italian bbs to further confuse things). Talk about a learning curve. This video is gold, wish it was available a few months ago!

    Funny that Ethan wasnt there since AFAIK, he runs Fit Blunt Cranks in 24 spindle/bb
    I run them as well. Lighter set up, havent had problems with the bb yet ( i dont do big drops though)
    The plus side running a 24 is that i dont need to use a top hat washer for the spindle.
    I just have a feeling that 24 is set to be phased out since i havent seen any spline drive sprocket for them in a long time. Missed out on the fit key spline ones.

  • @TheAwGooner

    I think the transition from an American bb to the Mid bb came about when sealed bearings became more common. The larger size of the American bb was originally to accommodate the unsealed or loose ball bearings. You can now buy sealed bearings for an American bb which will either have that larger cup integrated or a conversion cup to use a mid bb sealed bearing

    From what I can recall from back in the day, I rode from 2001-2005. The American bottom-bracket was just called that cause it was industry standard here, don't quote me but I think that it was I was told back then. I remember maybe 03 or 04 the Eruo bottom-bracket started becoming pretty popular on the east coast, from my understanding was just a way to save weight. I did see a few of my friends destroy them back in the day they didn't seem very strong. Had one friend slice his bottom-bracket open, just didn't seem to hold the stress well. I never saw or even knew they had made a Spanish bottom-bracket though so goo info there! It's so interesting coming back years later looking at all this stuff and see how things have evolved. I assume the Mid bottom-bracket is like the standard now?

    i never had a sealed bearings for my old bmx... American BB in loose ball bearings, in cups and nuts

  • @KenPapara
    @KenPapara 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Props to the Spanish BMX brand Fly bike's who made the first Spanish BB, it was a Euro BB bearing without the threaded cups put straight into a frame. Then someone used the same concept and put the American BB bearing straight into a frame which is a Mid BB. Like you said though, the Spanish/Euro BB bearing wasn't strong enough to handle Freestyle BMX, especially the 22mm Spanish bearing because they blew out easily. Since Fly bike's cranks had a 22mm spindle and needed 22mm Spanish bearings for their frames, I blew a few out myself. So now most Freestyle BMX frames including all newer Fly bike's frames use a Mid BB because the bearings are bigger and stronger and you can use a 22mm spindle or bigger without the bearing blowing out. Awesome video as always :)

Even though it's a flatland frame, I have it set up like a street bike and ride street and flatland on it and the bottom bracket has not broken yet. The headset bearings went bad and the freecoaster went bad but the bottom bracket is doing well. So I disagree, the spanish bottom bracket is great. It's my opinion! Great video though!

    Maybe people should just bring their bikes in or the mangled parts they are trying to replace. The one that kinda drive me crazy are seat post sizes. Use to think that all bmx started 7/8 then went to 1 inch but wow I was so wrong. Plus seat post size doesn’t always correlate with a specific seat post clamp. And a cheep digital caliper can help except not every manufacturer shows the specs you need like actual OD or ID.

    Bottom brackets in BMX are easy! Little kids might be confused, but now days its only really mid and spanish. The old American style BB was so big to be able to fit one piece cranks through it. And the euro lasted about a year in BMX and was gone. Go look at mountain bike bb's. There are way to many options!

  • @AgentMellow-fk1uo

    This video reminds me of the disasters in the early 2000's with BB's. Go to buy a new frame and had to change all your bearings and might have to change spindles. Such a nightmare.
    Same with integrated and non integrated headsets. It was a 50/50 shot if your new frame would be integrated. Again had to buy different hardware when you got a new frame. Being a young buck with no job that was not easy to pull off getting new hardware lol
    So happy everything is more standardized now. Makes swapping shit around so much better.

    What about the tube spacer on the spindle in between the bottom bracket in the bearings that's always a pain in the butt on some frames and spindle length if bottom brackets too wide that spindle won't fit properly

  • @papi_dan
    @papi_dan 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    When I used my old Fit Edwin frame, I only used it at first because it handled similar to the Fly Pantera it replaced but I wasn't psyched about the euro bb because of how small it looked, plus the grinding or bashing on the bb tube itself but the bb on the Edwin was as thick as the Liverpool accent, so that gave me peace of mind because with the cups threaded in, the od of the bb tube was slightly larger than the overall od of the outside part of the euro cups and the only bb bearings that I can honestly say was the smoothest, most crankflip friendly bottom bracket I've used to this day, and it was the Eastern "double wide" needle bearing bb they put out almost 20 years ago. Whether it was 19 or 22 mm, that thing could take a beating and come back for more. Oh and the cups were aluminum too. That type of bearing was the only thing that blew my skepticism about it away

    Spanish I didn't think they still made them 😲 (I learned about them from dans comp back in the day)
    personally I prefer sealed American bottom bracket

    So all the parts at the shop are under glass or behind the counter? So if I want to check out a pair of bars or forks, etc. an employee has to keep handing parts over for me to look at? "How about the black ones.......ok how about the chrome ones.....can I see those OTHER black ones......how about the other chrome ones.....ok now I need grips...."

    Bb= bigger bullshit. If you actually shred, your bike will be toast before you change your bottom bracket. I cruise and will not change my bb from years.

    American bottom bracket usually has caged ball bearings not sealed bearings. It's able to accept a one piece crank. Also lose the background music. It's unessesary and distracting. 5:22

      In most 90% of american BBS are sealed. Out of the thousands of videos and millions of views this is the first complaint about music. 0-2

    American is big for 1 piece cranks, European has always been around since the cotter pin crank pos junk...once 3 piece cranks became the norm, mid just makes sense.
