Few notes about the video :) I'm mainly going by Johnson's hand positioning from the "Eric Johnson Live from Austin Texas" video posted on TH-cam. That was the performance on December 18th 1988. Of course, there are parts from the studio take that he doesn't play again (but he always improvises something equally amazing) so I listened very closely and took my best educated guess and did what felt comfortable for me personally. For Bars 23 - 29, I observed from the Austin Texas performance that he picks the whole part. But in other performances, he hybrid picks that. I was more comfortable with the picking. If you are feeling the hybrid, go for it! Perhaps the hardest piece on the page for me personally! It took me a month while I was balancing other projects and I kind of recorded it all in sections. Enjoy!
This is absolutely fantastic! Not only was the playing and transcription on the money but the tone is exact! Extremely difficult on all counts and extremely well done. Incredible job, man! \m/
I've been listening to this song since middle school when it came out on Guitar Hero 3. That game eventually inspired me to pick up the guitar and excel at it. After 15 years of playing, I get told by some of my band mates and friends that my skills are so good it makes them consider quitting (jokingly of course) as we all feel as musicians when someone plays like an absolute boss and it seems unattainable. When they tell me things like that, I give examples like this... talk about making ME wanna trash it for the day. The finesse, speed and accuracy of this level of playing is my personal next level. Thank you for inspiring me to reach it, friend! To anyone who reads this feeling the same intimidation, keep practicing and loving the instrument and it WILL pay off!

I'm a 15 yr old who actually first heard this song in a google search for the hardest guitar songs ever lol. A while back I finally decided I was ready to take it on. I spent hours and hours trying to get it right only to realize this vid existed, and that I was playing it wrong all along. Bottom line, this video is the only reason I've made progress, and is one of the most beautiful covers I've ever heard.
The First time I heard this song I cried. As a musician the magic in the notes touched me deeply never heard music played like that. Still can play it wish I could.
I've started getting back into playing guitar consistently after playing on and off for 20 years now, and have used a number of your videos to re-learn some classics. I learned this song 10 years ago and wanted to learn it again, and after searching for the original tab I used to learn it I was amazed that you had the tab included in your videos as well. You are doing incredible work and I'm grateful for your videos!
This is by far the most impressive use of a Squier I have ever seen. Not only is your playing technique and transcription excellent , the fact that this was performed on an instrument that is within the budget for most players is just incredible. My first guitar was an early 90s Squier Strat that's been collecting dust for probably 20 years and this video makes me want to give it a tune up and see what it can do...
WOW, your tone (and performance) is dang near perfect. 12:16, 14:16, 7:8, ect... Now I know why I could never play the opening. I saw Eric Johnson in concert once when he opened for ZZ Top. Needless to say, that was an amazing evening of guitar playing.
Wow, I decided to try to learn this song and went looking for videos on TH-cam. You don't just provide super accurate tabs, your playthrough is one of the best renditions I have found besides Mr. Johnson himself. I didn't even realize how difficult this song was before I started learning it. I'm using this video as my main study though and I hope I can get it down one day.

When you really think about what music is and how it's a universal form of communication, it's one of our most important creations in all of history.
I started playing hair guitar in 1985 when I was 15. A friend took me to bar that had hair cover bands. This was 1991. His buddy was playing and he was supposed to be a killer. I saw Mr. Johnson perform this live on October 31st 1996 at The Palace of Auburn Hills in Auburn Hills, Michigan during the very first G3 tour with Satch and Vai. PHENOMENAL!!!!! What threw me for a curve ball at that show was that there was also an "Opening Act". I arrived about 10 minutes late so I missed his introduction. But in an arena with maybe 8,000-10,000 people in attendance that was this tiny bald man on stage in the dark with nothing but his guitar and a lamp that you may find in someone's living room hanging over his head. For the next 30 minutes or so I saw this guy play some of the raddest finger-style guitar I had ever heard. My ears had never witnessed anything like that before. It was 1 guy sounding like 3 or 4 players. He was changing the string tuning mid song and a whole bunch of other stuff you may see all the time here on youtube, but this was 1996. This tiny British man in front of an arena crowd but felt like you were in his living room just blowing everyone's minds was Mr. Adrian Legg. Around 10 years later I was living in San Diego and saw he had a show coming up at a very small and intimate venue on the bay. I immediately logged online and bought a ticket. That night after his set, I got a chance to meet him, take a picture, and buy a couple of cds. I brought up being at his show on the G3 in Detroit and he was telling me about how it was one of his favorite performances that he had done and how out of place he kind of felt in that big arena with just him on stage. I told him that he made the crowd feel like we were all in his home just listening to him play. Good Memories!

Excellent way of recognising how brilliant the song is whilst threatening one through inspiration to maybe learn it!!!
As always, it’s not just the tabs and playing, it’s all the extra details. Attention to detail on every single aspect of the tab, video, playing, attire, etc. happy holidays dude ❤
This is insane!! Very identical to the original recording.
This guy played this so perfectly, now this is what I wanted to see. I would to see you do some heads are gonna roll by Judas Priest, or cities on flames with rock n roll by Blue Oyster Cult.
A little over a year ago, I performed at my school's talent show, and this song was in the setlist. I would like to say thank you for posting guitar tutorials, especially this video and Spanish Fly. My classmates really liked the show, and a video is posted on my channel if anyone is interested. If you are currently watching this tutorial, I wish you luck. It is not easy, but if I can do it, you can too.
Do some scorpions. wind of change, still loving you, Send me an angel, under the same sun
I literally just opened up youtube with the sole intent of searching for a cliffs of dover tab, and I didn't even have to search for it because your video was just sitting on my recommended videos
This is bucket list stuff. I read the tab, I follow along visually, I pick up the guitar and go WTF!! then HOW TF. Then I see you doing it. and I think WTF and HTF! I'm a good guitar player, I know I am. but this..... this is a labour of love to us mortals and I've seen a few folk do it, but not many. One day y'know I WILL be able to play this. Thank you for your transciption and demonstration. You are priceless.
day 5467, mastered part A
Watching you play this is comforting for some reason. I dunno why.
Wow, crazy sick stuff, how did you learn that? Even if I'd lock myself up for 30 years and practice 10 hours a day I couldn't do that.
You seriously could , believe in yourself 😁
I bet you could
Tbh 10 hours a day for a month would be more than enough
Me and My buddies wished that we had video lessons like these back in the day! I was reluctant to play this piece knowing that back in the day there are tons of mistakes with the tablature that's circulating out there. And in the end end up playing the wrong notes. But now at least I know this is the correct one! Thanks for the corrections who ever you are Mr. Tabs. And yes thanks for correcting Bark at the Moon as well, because when Mr. Jake E Lee had a guitar clinic He would even show the correct solo on that piece.
Damnit. I swear I’m gonna learn this if it takes me forever. Wish me luck ya’ll🙏
This has been my favorite guitar song of all time and your ability to capture it perfectly blessed me so much. Thank you Mr. Tabs for sharing your gift with the world. I’m forever grateful for your talent and I wish you a lifetime of success. Highest regards.
Jesus christ, I'll try other song
Come on man we need more guitar players😅
@YBXtreminal
Don't quit keep trying😂
Lolol been telling myself that for 30 years….still fightin
I was just thinking that same thing. I will become a skeleton practicing this song.
I just came for the comments 😂
This guys has it down all the way to Eric's vest! That's like another level of commitment. Best version Ive heard on youtube hands down
Chuck Norris knows the lyrics to cliffs of Dover.
Tried this over a decade ago, can't see it happening tbh. Mad respect to anyone that can get this down.
memories from guitar hero
I've learned the first 3 minutes so far and it's taken about 2 weeks to get this far but this video has been insanely helpful thank you!
Great to hear!
Dang man your patience is amazing. this took me 5 months and I'm not even past the H Section
@nintony2994 keep at it man! Everyone has their own pace, take it one step at a time
Hi fantastic lesson - as always! You've got a feeling for the details! Could you please make a tabs lesson for "Dokken - Alone Again" ? The Solo is so Killer and the Intro is very emotional. :)
I enjoy your videos immensly. The tab split screen with you playing is top notch. L9ve the backing tracks with no vocals as well. The icing on the cake is your neck down p4ofile while wearing period /artist accurate attire and in most cases, the acurate model of instrument used to create the song and sound. Rock on my Canadian brother ! You have given me literally thousands of hours of practice material. Thank you.
Mr. Eric Johnson. Was this your channel? This song is not for playing. It's just for listening and enjoying. Most guitar players can't play like you do.
One of my New Years resolutions after really putting it together on guitar this past year is to learn this song… thank you. I have a feeling I will be watching this a lot.
Awesome. My New Years Resolution is to get every bodies requests in. Best of luck with the tune!
@@Mr.Tabs.Guitar.Lessons thanks for the reply! Do you have the pedal chain you used on this? The tone is absolutely spot on with what Eric had in the original recording. Awesome work again
Have you made any progress learning the song?
Years almost up, did you ever learn this one?
@@EnricoMatassa1535 not this one yet but I’ve learned some tough ones in the process that I wouldn’t have otherwise learned so I’m not disappointed with the progress!
Is the bass part easier?
Anyone pondering making a Tab and demo video for this song. I hope you searched first! Because you arent doing any better than this guy. Love the vest/jacket too. Nice touch. This tab and playing is so great for anyone who wants to tackle this. Good luck to everyone trying to learn this and a huge thank tou to this guy for doing all the hard work for us. Lifting songs is the hard part. Thanks dude. Bravo!
Let's be honest you are here to listen to the cover not to learn the song 😘
Nope here to study the theory
B.S. I'm no weak-minded individual
I'm here for both lol
This song makes me want to quit it is so great
Usually when I watch videos like this it's some kid with long spidery fingers playing. Seeing someone with normal fingers able to play like this is giving me with my sausage like digits some hope at last ;) Seriously that is some playing - great work!
" I (guitar solo) " i thought the whole song is a guitar solo
Thanks!
Welcome!
fantastic transcription . im 59 now , Don't plan on living past 73 . if i start on this today i might get to play it at my own funeral . wish me luck.
Sad 😢
Amazingly superb!
Wow. Only 1.2M views on such glorious feeling & impeccable technique? C'mon. Thanks for sharing this!
Glad you liked it!
@@Mr.Tabs.Guitar.LessonsThank you so much Mr. Tabs! I've already learned Sweet Child o' Mine, Paradise City, Under the Bridge, Pride and Joy, Voodoo Child, and Walk This Way from you.
Jesus! If you played the actual track and this back to back I probably couldn't tell you which was this original. Amazing work! \m/\m/
Patrick Dwyer is the 'Bob Ross' of teaching anyone to play some phenomenal guitar. I actually 'think'I can play this song. Perhaps you could have a spot for your students to post their versions of your songs. I'd imagine that might be as rewarding for you as old Bob used to feel when he received his students' versions of his paintings he did on his show. We salute you Mr Dwyer.
WOW!! You have just given me hope of getting this down, no other lesson I have found to date is as good as what you’ve done, THANK YOU!!
Thank you for transcribing this song Mr tabs. Cliffs of Dover has been on my “guitar bucket list” for a very long time and thanks to this video, I have just completed learning the song in its entirety. It took me 3 weeks to learn all the notes now it’s going to take me A LOT more to get it clean and up to speed. SUBSCRIBED, PATREON SUPPORTER, LIFE IS GOOD…….
Sir...you knocked that one OUT of the ballpark. Thanks for your time and talent. Very much appreciated.
Wow absolutely incredible, Eric Johnson is one the greatest of all time . Even more than his incredible playing and technique I love love his tone.
I know that I may be here for years. Decades even maybe but one day. Mark my words. One day I will learn this 100%.
This is an absolutely jaw-dropping cover. You even nailed the tone. Absolutely amazing
Great video as always! I had this song down when it's half speed, but never progressed further and gave up haha
That.. was fabulous. My foot didn't stop tapping all the way thru. I love this piece of music. Whoever you are, you are one hell of a guitarist to play all these different types of music. My hat is off to you.
Thats insanely good, even if recorded in sections. Remembering the whole tune in one go would be crazy.
I literally have more difficulty remembering the parts than playing them...
This is just too good. Bravo, sir.
Awesome!! Learned this when I was very young and never forgot. Funnest song to play ever!
Nice job dude! I did this song for my Grade 11 Band Project but you play it way way better than I did. Its still a super fun song to learn and play.
i've been looking for the tabs for ages i finally found a tab video like 2 weeks ago and i've learned the song correctly yesterday and today you post a video about it haha
Who is this dude. Look at all these videos. Whoever this person is, they can play literally everything.
1:36 just after the “chord” bit (9th on G, 8th on B 7th on E, etc) - that little sequence hits me, regardless of whether it’s the live, recorded or cover versions. And I don’t quite know why.
"Are you Eric? " Could be the best compliment i could say.
what an absolute banger of a cover of this song. Looks so effortless and untethered. cheers man, keep up the good work
You absolutely killed it dude. I've tried learning this in the past but didn't go all the way through, got sidetracked and it takes a lot of focus to learn anything by EJ really. Now I will be revisiting it with your video as a guide :)
Sometimes when i start feeling good about my guitar skills
I come here
And instantly regret picking this instrument up
You can do it!
Thats one of the best guitar intros ever. I can play this song too, but it took me about 7 years to learn.
Worth it tho:)
