To those saying things like "Go around them!" or "Use projectiles!" Obviously if this were a battle, that's what anyone with an IQ higher than that of a shovel would do. But that's not the point of the video. The point of the video is to show just how impregnable the front of the phalanx formation is. Obviously in an actual battle (both historically and in the game), you would never have one on one units like this. Each of these would be one of many units fighting together. And yes, obviously in that situation, one would ideally want to simply outmaneuver the phalanx. But again, that's not the point of the video. The point of the video is quite the opposite: to show you WHY you want to outmaneuver the phalanx, by showing you what will happen if you don't.
A butcher to be sure, but an instructive one
If you put medium infantry and heavy cavalry on the flanks it will 100% of the time hold just long enough for your phalanx to beat their front line and shatter their formation.
Sure we get the point. But atleast when the principles and legionnaires and Praetorian guard charged, they could have atleast thrown their pilas on to the phalanx, scoring a few kills head on. It would be a bit fair.
No point going around them... even Alexander himself arranged his phalanx unit in staggered formation. You go around to the side of one unit, you will crash to the next one on the wings...at the end there are the companion cavalry ready to charge your rear when you turn your units inward towards the staggered formation.
The solution is not to fight a phalanx on the equal level where this formation is designed for. Fight it where it is useless. Like how the Greeks in marathon made the Persian cavalry and missile advantage useless.
Pointless video is my conclusion. Everybody knows what’s going to happens when charging a phalanx formation to front. Didn’t need an almost half an hour video to show how compact this formation is

I think you can do what the Swiss did, to basically charge a Phalanx with your own phalanx
It was comon knowledge back then that your couldnt beat a phalanx head they would just steamroll their way through you, you had to go arround the sides

If you have a good unit and its very wide and you also activate loose fo4mation, they will get trough their back and sloughter the phalanx

The games veteran mechanics don't matter. Even in history the Greek phalanx over powered the Roman legion's front lines. Its only vulnerability is its flanks, and inability to move quickly. Thats how the Roman's beat Macedon, by out maneuvering its phalanx in the battle field.
Actually historical romans beat macedon cause macedon was in war with rome and selkuid empire at the same times thats why they lost , in a fight with equal numbers u simply cant beat the ways of alexander
@Avi yeah he beat them. They just bloodied his army enough that he decided it wasnt worth it to keep fighting them and went off to attack Carthage instead, but they didnt defeat him in battle.
Many things contributed to this. Better Roman recruit system, the phalanxes not being used as they were designed (with great cavalry support) , Roman diplomacy etc. Hell pikes were used in the 15th and 16th centuries with great success until the firearms became the standard.

There is very clearly a huge improvement on pikes for the AI. I was playing an Epirus campaign and accidentally charged my mercenary elephants into a unit of levy pikes from Athens. Before I even noticed what was happening, my ENTIRE UNIT was dead. In seconds. Legendary difficulty sure is a wonder.
Weird how spears as romans dont do dhit to elepphants yet these pikes do all the damage i ws under the impression of elephants win every engagement
Charging a Spartan Hoplite Phalanx = Insane
Charging a Macedonian Pike Phalanx = Suicidal
This scene is so ridiculous that it would've fit perfectly into Monty Python's "Life of Brian" movie. The Romans get completely skewered before they're even remotely close to the Macedonians.
Most roman melee units have 2 javelins to use when charging, so it can take out quite some Spartan pikemen. But pikemen is meant to be used in a defensive position or chokepoint as phalanx formation is very slow moving, they also lack any substantial projectile protection (mainly shield armour). Historically the phanlax formation arrange the pike of the pikemen behind the line in such a way that it provide substantial protection against projectiles but this is not translated by CA into the phanlax formation. There is also a gap between the enemy pikemen and friendly troops so archers units can fire at pikemen behind the friendly troops with less possibility of friendly fire (except skirmishers and slingers as their projectile path have less arc than bow and arrow)

Still doesn't matter, you don't charged straight head on with the phalanx. Best is to outflanked and outmaneuvered them, and if the phalanx are based in Alex's time then you bet those phalanx men are the veterans of the most veterans of any army in the world in that time second only to the legendary silver shields and cavalry companion of Alexander's army.

With the same stats, that phalanx can not defeat the pretorian guard that is a fact you try it.
It would be cool to see them march forward. The reason it was so effective was because it was used offensive rather than only defensively

Maybe he doesn't activate fire at will, if you activated it infantry armed with javelin will automatically throw it if the enemy is near and when charging they would throw it

This video is showing the results of a melee brawl. A straight up charge against a phalanx wall. He even has archers and slingers charge. That being said I expected the veteran legionaries to actually deal serious damage, especially after the Spartans dropped their pikes.

Spears and polearms can get lost or broken on rare occasions. This is the case in many recent TW games.

no pilum throw? that's how the romans decimated the phalanx after throwing their phylum they would flank the phalanx with the pilum stuck on the phalanx's shields or maimed by the barrage of the pilum and together with long sarissa they were unable to act quickly, thus decimated.
Lol what? The main reason why Phalanx was utterly defeated is by baiting the Macedons to an uneven Terrain where they lost unit cohesion and formation, the Romans then out manuevered them and rushed on the loose gaps of the Phalangites.

The best ways to beat the phalanx:
- cut their spear with your sword.
- javelins troops.
- go behind them.
What angers me the most is... Some of those units have Javelins. USE THEM, YA GITZ!

If use in choke points and covered by archers i doubt theres any ancient unit that get penetrate a phalanx. But like they do have some weak point. If it was an actual roman unit they would throw their spears before charging in. Me personally if you disrupt the front ranks and the rest of the phalanx just move in fast enough to fill the gaps the romans can get in close and personal and that is where they can win.

The new legions defeated the Macedonian phalanx because the Romans lured them into the hills until the formation of the phalanx was broken, and they actually did that.
I suggest setting these battles in a bridge map instead of an open desert and play the phalanx instead of the romans since they have no choice but to get funneled into a bridge lmao i hate it when they drop their spears

This is so incredibly inaccurate. The pikeman didn't even put away the pikes and engage with swords the second the enemy got close.

I would expect its integrity to fail after a while.
Historically, the Phalanx had indeed a certain advantage over early Legionaries in open field confrontations, but i would expect the situation to even out after the Marian reform (=professional and better armed units).
The phalanx was practically invulnerable from the front unless its cohesion was disrupted by the terrain or missiles.
@@kramhorse I think that is an exaggeration. The wall of spears was densely packed, but they could probably be deflected away thanks to the scutum. I'm not saying that it would be a simple task, but that it would not easily end in a miserable massacre of legionaries.

Historically the Roman Legion defeated the Greek Hoplite Phalanx because of their mixture of ranged and melee combat.
As the legion would charge they would throw their pilum or pila, special javelins designed to imbed in shields, get stuck there, thus weighing down the shield making them unusable.

This video is biased. After some time, you deactivate the phalanx, so that the units come closer, but you wait much lnger for the strong units until deactivating the phalanx, probably out of fear that they could defeat the hopites?

Yes, but not if they use their bows at first while circling the formation to get into the weakpoints, i tested too. Huns are OP vs all infantries and lowerspeed cavalry.

Historically innacurate game. Romans can outmanouver saricas very easly with the big scutum, and indeed they did it when conquering Macedon. You only need to deflect the long reach weapon, once that done, you can allmost go closr range against the macedonian soldier in close combat. And that could be accomplished by any Roman unit that had scutum, those are: Hastati, Principes and Triari. That's why Rome became superpower, because of having the best close combat heavy infantry ever.
