I've watched this video a bunch of times, because in my opinion Adam Jones has one of the best sounds of any guitarist. Now if only I could afford a Diezel head....
Those Diezel heads are insane. Maybe my ears aren't trained enough but I am really satisfied with just a tube pre-amp and a Vox tube amp. Played on it today, total cost w/o guitar is maybe 1500 euros. To me anything above that is just looking out for perfection.
@@johantitulaer1052 you're not wrong. mid level gear is just fine, high level gear like the VH4 and boutique amps are like Lamborghini's, a statement of wealth lmao. I use a Peavey 6505+ and am very satisfied with my sound.
Adam Jones stays on channel 3 of his Diezel VH4's pretty much all the time. Channel 2 of the Diezel VH2 is modeled after the VH4's channel 3. The VH2 is 2 channels and half the price.
I bet Adam felt bad when Frank died. I didn't know he passed until recently. That dude has been with the band for a long time. To me the most intriguing is that synthesizer on the floor with the pedals. I would love to try something like that.
Love the video. But being a drummer. These guys spoke Neptune to me…… I seen buttons, boxes, knobs, switches and petals. I have no clue what any of them do. But I do know what comes out of them is so pure, genuine, thought reflecting and amazing. It’s in my bloodstream and soul and I need it daily.
The cabs explain why I spent years playing the bass parts on guitar without even realizing it. It's almost like the guitar holds down the low end AND the high end. And the bass is crushing the high end AND the low end. It's why NOBODY sounds like Tool.
Damn- now that's a rig- the pedals are pretty minimal but- the synths are super cool and those are some bad ass amps. I still don't understand how he gets that distortion sound he uses all the time- it has such beautiful, complex harmonics in it- the waves sound very squared off and separated- you can almost hear each individual peak. I bet it's that MXR dyna comp combined with the Marshal and the humbuckers I'm hearing. I don't know if anyone else knows what I'm even referring to- but I bet Adam would. You only hear it plainly when he hits like a power chord and holds it for a second- it's an amazing distortion- the best I've ever heard. I have synesthesia- it just means you associate certain color or images with sounds- that's one way it manifests itself anyway. The image in my head that goes with his sound is very odd- it's a metal grill like you see on a barber's clippers- you know, the grill that sticks out and keeps the razor from contacting your skin. It's big though- like it's on some huge industrial machinery or something- and I can hear that sound emanating from it. One of these days I'm going to animate what I'm seeing in my head digitally- imo it captures their sound so well- it is their sound. The colors I see with it are chrome and black.
@@lxxwj I've played through those amps though- and it didn't sound right, he's adding something somewhere somehow. I will say I didn't hear it when I saw them live- they still had a great sound but this aspect was missing. But tbh it was so loud- it's hard to say, I don't like going to concerts for this reason- they have it so loud it loses so much nuance and articulation at times it just sounds like mush. Tool did better than most, I will say that- it never sounded like mush but- it wasn't their best show. The venue (Little Rock) sucked- it was way over policed, no alcohol after 9 o'clock, no cigarettes, nothing allowed- and cops everywhere, arresting ppl left and right before show started. But it put the crowd in a shitty mood, and I think the band could tell that- they tried and they played beautifully, of course- didn't miss a lick, but the energy wasn't there. It felt like they just wanted to get done and go- and tbh I felt the same. I was kind of glad when it was over.
@@stoneysdead689 you'd need to play through all 3 amps, at the same time and with the same cabinets that he has. he uses duncan distortion pickups from the 90's as well. im sure its the 3 amp setup that really gives his tone the nuance

The talkbox works by disable the sound from the main amp and comes out of the amp in the pedal through the tube. When he “talks” with it, the mic picks up the sound which plays through the Roland Cube with the sustain pedal.
