  • Are you ready for cruising on foils at 50 knots where selecting the pace and the ride that you're after is no harder than switiching between cruise and sport modes in your car? This new monster of a cruising concept might be closer than you think. We take a look at the exciting developments ahead of the America's Cup in Auckland as all four teams get afloat with their new boats. Plus, we report on an emotional start for the Vendée Globe along with some of the surprise casualties.

    As an aerospace engineer I find your heeling analysis to be a bit over stated: yes, it’s more complicated because the boats “heel” in 3 dimensions which adjust the angle of attack and pitch and yaw of the foils and the sail, BUT the foils are NOT fixed by buoyancy to the surface (or some finite depth below the surface). All of the forces on the boat effectively act as a force and moment arm about the CG but you’re not dealing with buoyancy forces (much) once the boat is flying. Buoyancy forces are very good at giving you an “axis” to rotate about because rolling takes comparatively much less force than pitching does for a long slender displacement craft. Water is very dense so small relatively small changes in submerged volume result in tremendous forces. But this is not so for foils: the lift and drag forces are determined by velocity and angle of attack & yaw as well as dynamic pitching rolling and plunging. A gust will create a heeling moment but also a nose down moment about the CG because the CP of the sails is above the mast. The heeling moment wants to drive the main foil deeper in the water but that rotation may in turn cause the rudder foil to pull towards the surface. If the rudder ventilates then the stern suddenly drops, the angle of attack on the main foil is drastically increased and you encounter the frightening wheelie maneuver that NYYC #2 pulled. There is definitely no fixed axis of rotation between the foils though.

      Excellent analysis of the sailing forces on AC75s. These are completely different boats with their own unique sailing characteristics. For this reason, it will be the crew’s ability to control these half bird half fish yachts that will determine their success.

    • @wildbill805
      @wildbill805 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sudden ventilation makes a significant sucking sound. At least that’s the way it used to be on my windsurfer when I over pressured the fin at max speed. On these giant vessels, that might be a very dramatic sound and I hope the video of these boats includes the audio of those rudder foils.

    • @rcpmac
      @rcpmac 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I an not an engineer but a mere carpenter. Your explanation makes a lot of sense but I expect our host got his information from the design team of these amazing vessels. Both explanations seem logical. My reason for commenting however is the idea I’m stuck on that dual foiling rudders could provide additional downward and leeward control without significant added drag.

      Multiple tons of pressure I'm sure. Double digits at the least. Amazing that one moving part can support the entire vessel. That's some serious engineering.
      Or allot of trial and error. I do not think that any kind of metal would do the job. Carbon fiber is the saving grace here. Nothing else would handle the extreme pressure.

    The problem with foils and large expensive yachts, is the threat of striking an object in the water that would cause the foil to break, or snag the foil causing significant damage to the boat. especially when you consider the speed and mass of a sailing boat of this size being up on foils. Imaging travelling at 30+ knots and the foil collides with a large object (ie: whale/large fishing net/or something tethered to the ocean floor).
    You would need foils more commonly employed on large steel hulled hydrofoils.

    These are world class sailors but they will be challenged like never before. Crew skills will be paramount to handling the wild characteristics of the flying fish AC75s. Faster speeds will put greater pressure on the crew reflexes in order to respond to the unusual forces which drive the boat. A mistake will at best lose the race and at worst destroy the boat.

    I don't see how they can get the cat light enough so that it will foil properly. The key with the truly effective foilers is super light weight, and even with all carbon construction, if you include the "mod cons" expected in a 300 footer, it just seems impossible.
    I've harped on this before, but AC36 in AC75's is going to be spectacular boats doing poor racing. Even a small speed advantage will result in huge differences on the race course, and the guys who've figured it out are going to smoke those who are a step (or a mile) behind. And I don't think we're going to find "some are better in some areas than others". It's going to be a slaughter, and if I had to pick a winner at this point, it's the Kiwi's. (But I wouldn't bet on it.)
    They should have stuck with the AC45/50's, developed them with some smart rule changes and upgrades and allowed a lot of other teams to get involved. More teams is better for the sport. More countries would be interested, there would be more sailors, and more money (more countries = more possible sponsors) would be more spread out. Look what's happened with the Vendee Globe with a ~ $10 million budget - 33 teams! Even if you take just the new generation foilers, it's 8 teams. Think what AC36 would be with 8 teams!

    Am I the only one noticing, that this catamaran would be way too heavy for those kinds of foils? Even assuming the foils on the cat are as large in relation to the hull as the foils on the AC boats there is no way they generate enough lift for a fully fitted boat... make them larger and they have too much drag... looks a bit fishy to me

    • @robh87
      @robh87 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I disagree, those foils make sense to me. They provide the lift and the 90 degree angle on the end is what holds the weight above the water line.
