    This is, by any measure, the most honest and thorough review I have ever watched! I live... far.... very far, and it costs a pretty penny to get my smart home devices here. It is quite the decision when I decide to get anything shipped over. Your review has made my decision easy. Thank you! And do have a Happy New Year!.

    I'm really pleased that I watched this review, it was going to be my next "tech buy", cannot believe the omissions in the o.s. and hardware. They really have missed a trick here, so until they possibly correct some of the shortfalls I'll stay with the show 10 device.

    What’s the deal with the big “swing and a miss” on the Smart Home widget? So much potential, so much work to be done…

    Does the show 15 have the bug where it shows a few photos from the folder you point it at and the one "On This Day" photo with the date taken in the bottom left.
    I cant find a way to turn this off any show or firestick, its's particularly annoying on bedside show 5's as the size of the date changes and you have to wait to see the time on the next photo(old and blind). You would think the same interface and OS wouldn't be difficult for all the shows , with added customisation.

    This kind of reminds me when I first purchased an Echo. Got it in beta, and was looking forward to voice controlled music. But from the start there were some baffling limitations for a smart speaker. The one that surprised me most was the lack of an ability to stream to multiple Echos- have whole home audio. It had been mentioned as being in development, then nothing. Waited a few months, Nothing. Few more. Nothing. It took over two years for Amazon to integrate this function, and even then it was... a bit rough at times. Amazon at least did come back through and update software and keep adding new features, but the development times were all over the place. I think we're going to see a lot of this with the Show 15. It seems Amazon is releasing products that are not truly finished. And while I trust that Amazon will eventually add in a lot of missing pieces, you'll need a crystal ball, tarot deck, and some palm reading to know when they will actually get around to filling it out. I'd really just stick with the other Shows for now; let others be the beta testers for you until the features come that you want.

    Great in depth review. I was one of those people who pre-ordered thinking this was exactly what I have been waiting for. Yes, aesthetically not bad, I have my own few issues with it and there seems to be a lot of room for updates. One gripe I have is that when adding an event to the calendar (by voice), if Alexa misspelled the word, you can go in and edit, however, when pressing done afterwards does not save the changes, I was hoping this was not just me, is this a fault for everyone?

    I was curious if anyone knows of an alternative to the Echo Show 15?
    A good 10 inch touch tablet works just fine and can be mounted on the wall. I personally had an old Samsung tablet that was too slow for normal use, but mounted on my wall and running the Alexa app as well as Home Assistant it works very well for the task of controlling my smart home devices. I also just purchased a Vankyo 10 inch Android tablet for $89 on Amazon and it works even better.
    I kind of surprised that some manufacturer had not jumped on the bandwagon and made a 15 inch touch screen tablet.

    Can someone answer me TWO very simple questions: When in photo mode - does the photo mode stay on indefinietly and does it have stupid watermark text in the corner of the photo mode? My stupid Echo show 5 has photo mode but always has water marks saying - "ask Alexa - when was this photo taken" etc.) I have unticked every single option in the settings menus to turn off recommendations to no avail. The whole reason I want to buy an echo show 15 is to use it as a frame 1st and smart device 2nd... i dont want widgets popping up or stupid "recommendations" that effectively ruin the photo frame experience.
    Thanks!

    Thank you for the great video. My major peeve against all Echo Show devices is Amazon's bizarre refusal to allow user control over that enormous giant clock. It ruins virtually every photo that I wish to display on the device. It annoys me so much that I keep my echo show in sleep mode 23 hours and 59 minutes a day, displaying only a black screen until I wake it up for some reason. I use it to check on the ring doorbell or my blink cameras but that's about it. Why? Because when I try to display my family photos the giant clock ends up over elements of the photo composition. I am literally seated in front of a PC all day everyday. I have a cell phone in my pocket or on my desk next to me. I do not need a giant freaking clock. And yet Amazon will not allow us to change the font or make this thing smaller or eliminate it altogether. This seems a very simple request, I really really just don't get it, Amazon's obstinance concerning this feature. What is this fetish they have about this giant stupid clock?
    I have to assume I am not the only one who hates this, and therefore that they are losing sales because people may love this device, but are not buying it or are waiting to hear that Amazon is finally allowing us some Choice over the giant freaking clock.
    Between now and then, no thank you. Hope someone, anyone, from Amazon is reading this.

    Totally agree with everything you said. And for that reason I will not upgrade from my echo show 8. There is just not enough of a reason or justification to pay over £200 for an item that hasn't really got what I want other than I have. Most smart homes need a smart dashboard showing all groups, devices and routines on one screen or accessible from one screen.

  • @justind.6780

    Good video. I own an Echo Show 15. 1. Good instructions are needed to make video calls or send photos to echo show friends. 2. Should handle photos the same as the Amazon Photo App. 3. Should be able to disable wiget display or move them off the screen. 4. Bought it to respond to different users by sight or voice . Would rather have an Amazon HD Fire Tablet 10+.

    I was most excited about the smart home control and possible sonos widget. It seems the music section does what I want being a Amazon music subscriber and shows recent stations for quick access. I’m probably more excited of what could come. The smart home control is pretty poor and I can’t seem to be able to organise the favourites in the Alexa app so they display what I want on the show 15.
    The power cable is a little short but there is an option to add the extension cable when ordering.

    I can't help feeling this is a first iteration of the OS and optimisation. I've seen a review of the 10 (US) where they are already implementing the ability to speak a command when looking at the device rather than using a wake-word and by 'include in conversation' - wonder how long before they update it. No Zigby is a pain though! Also if it's not able to be included in speaker groups, then it's pointless for me.

Like all things like this they've probably had the hardware ready and the software isn't, I know plenty of other products like that (PS3 at launch which didn't support Blu-Ray movies anyone!). Great video Stu, as always. I’ve been waiting for the review since this device was announced. Slightly disappointed with this new Echo but not surprised; the lack of customisation has been a let down with a lot of the Echo kit I have which is a big shame as I really want this ecosystem to succeed. Cross compatibility with other systems / video chat devices would be great also but unlikely as these lizard overloads do like their captive audiences. I absolutely love my Echo show 15. we have it wall mounted in portrait mode in our kitchen. In portrait mode the smart home screen is way better, the whole screen being filled with your individual devices, 12 devices are displayed at once in four rows of three. You can still scroll up and down through your devices if you have more but it's way better than you showed in landscape mode. Also there is a groups tab at the top of the screen, if you select this it will display all your grouped items to control with a single touch. For example in my lounge group i have six lights and two smart plugs, a single touch on the lounge group tile switches everything on (or of course you can just ask Alexa to do it). As you say though there appears to be no way to trigger routines. I think with (hopefully) future updates it could be improved even more, lets just hope Amazon get round to it

    • @StusReviewsUK
      @StusReviewsUK  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is you are correct, but still only 12 on a 15 inch screen is crazy… and the fact I can’t have routines… just a joke! And yes you do have a groups tab, but ‘everything is just 50 clicks away’. I agree in portrait it’s *slightly* better, but because this can play video content from streaming services, I think the majority of people will be using it landscape.
      Fingers crossed for some decent and swift updates from Amazon, because like I said - it’s got potential, it’s just not hitting the spot for me right now!

    • @chassisdynoman
      @chassisdynoman 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@StusReviewsUK All fair comments and totally agree about not being able to trigger routines, it would be good if you could re-size the tiles so the screen could be populated with more devices, perhaps this might come in a future update (doubt it though). I just wanted to mention that to me the smart home control screen was better in portrait, though i don't understand why you cant have the 12 tiles in landscape. Just lazy development i guess. And i agree with you in saying most people will probably use it in landscape due to watching video content. I Still love it though and love the channel, thanks for all you do

    Stu, totally agree about the Amazon ads. I have noticed shows on prime that are now only available with ads. I simply wont watch them. I watch primarily on demand TV to avoid ads. The big thing is, if they only put a couple of ads on and one was for an up coming show (on regular TV) I probably wouldn't mind, but I don't watch commercial TV because it is so annoying. That is why I pay for Amazon prime and Netflix. If Amazon do decide to do increase the ads or charge and include ads I will be leaving for sure.
    I also agree with most of your other points, camera quality, 2 widgets thing, etc. I also hate it when they position the camera in the corner. No one talks to the edge of a device!
    The only think I am not bothered about is the lack of built in zigbee hub as I don't use these on my existing echo's.

    • @GreeniusGenius
      @GreeniusGenius 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I agree. Watched Alex Rider series 1 with no ads on Amazon Prime, and then for series 2, they put it on their sub brand Imdb TV which showed me ads as it is free to air, even though I’m a prime subscriber. Absolutely disgusting behaviour. Just because the show is free for anyone doesn’t mean a paying customer should get ads too.

    Thanks for your review! I have ordered one now. One thing I found is that you if you go into settings, and then alexa preferences, then photos, then photo slideshow you can alter the settings for the speed of photo rotation - only thing is, this doesn't seem to work properly - although I did find that choosing fast (6 seconds) the photos don't change very often at all, definitely not every 6 seconds! Maybe like every minute?? This is obviously an error with the programming, but for now, it seems to work! Incredibly, I won one in a Raffle! I also got the stand for it as well. The stand feels absolutely huge! More so the depth of it, which made it hard for me to find a suitable location for it. I felt the sound from the device was rather tinny… just didn’t seem as good as other Amazon devices I have… but thats a personal thing. You covered all the widget side of things very well, and I too just felt as though the whole interface has been cobbled together, and does nor feel professional at all. One other thing that did cross my mind… what about screen burn? Do you think that would be something of an issue? I returned mine very quickly, even though the return windows was February 2022… I just felt let down…. I’m treating it as revision 1, will improve over time if they get that user interface sorted. Oh… I lied about winning mine… Some dodgy geezer suggested that this would be a good way to not let the wife know I had bought all of this… No Names….. No Names… :) Good Video Stu, covered al the points very well… but let’s work on the advice column a bit more! :)

    Maybe it has been said already in some comment, haven't read all of them, but maybe the fact that Amazon put a camera with such a small sensor in it have to do something with this current chip shortage. After using FireTV for years, I switched back to a Roku because of the all the Amazon ads and IMDB TV.
    Amazon video recently started limiting what people can make available for Prime and they have less of library now to get your to watch their IMDB TV and force ads on you.

    I also used a £15 100mm vesa swivel/tilt wall mount. Excellent insight into the somewhat strange software decisions that Amazon have made with this device, my main hope for this device is that it triggers competitors to create devices with a similar form factor, Google or Apple could do so much better a job of the UI, Google would likely have significant 3rd party widget support, I also think Apple won't go near a device like this but I kinda wish they would

    That being said, this is day 1 version 1.0 of the device and boy, does it show.
    The software is SHONKY as hell.... so much doesnt work, or doesnt respond. For example I cannot drag the widget screen down (or right) - the 'handle' does nothing. When using picture frame mode it causes the whole thing to freeze.
    It CAN be great - it should be - and im sure Amazon will update the software in due course its just a shame that they released it with such a poor first cut of the software.
