  • Do you ever wish you could just go to your pantry and take out a bag containing all ingredients for a fast entree? No thinking..no gathering up ingredients...no need to stop at the store on the way home to pick up something for supper. Or, in an emergency, would you like not to worry about what to feed your family or what you could take over to your neighbor? This video shows you how.

@@RoseRedHomestead Thanks for answering so quickly. I loved the show about dry ingredients mainly because I have lots. I have been pressure canning meats lately. I would want a bunch of recipes before opening all those dehydrated cannisters, for one or two . So just wondering where you got your measurements for final meal. Otherwise, seems like the dehydrated vegs will stay in their cans. I would really like to crack them open and do what you did. Thanks!

My husband thought I was crazy when I added powder sour cream, heavy cream, and whole milk to our dry stock shelves. Then he needed heavy cream and we had none in the fridge and the powdered worked like a champ, he’s now changed his tune! I love your stroganoff idea! I’m going to start doing this. Your right chasing all the odds and ends can be tiring and at the end of the day you just want to eat!

Pam, you should have at least 500K subs; your content is thorough, never dry and easily understandable!
    Suggestion:
You could have put the pasta in a baggie (or put in a coffee filter or paper towel, parchment paper, etc.), then placed on top of the rest of your ingredients in the jar if there was enough room, but it looked like there was plenty of room. Even if you put an ingredient into a paper or plastic bag and fold it over, the vacuum will work, but won't pull the contents out. This will save on expensive vacuum sealing bags and space. It's also a trick for vacuum sealing powders in jars to use the baggie or place the coffee filter on top of the powder thus avoiding it from getting everywhere when under vacuum.

When I cut the bags too short, I find it works (for some things) to cut the factory sealed end and seal the long sides to make a deep bag. Fill and seal the end where the factory seal was.

These would be terrific for bug out or go bags, too. You could keep some in your car for emergencies and a small portable stove, too. As someone else said these would be great for giving to unprepared people who may show up, also even if you don't have babies or children, diapers, wipes and powdered milk added to the bags for young families. They can also be bartered for other things people may need. The powdered milk would -not- be for young babies still on formula, it would be for older babies and children who need to drink milk, or for adding to food and baked goods. God bless you and your family.

Watching your video on Meals in Bags, which is such a great idea. Very familiar to me, from when I was a teen in the 70s, with the energy crisis, and inflation. My mom and I would bag up meals kind of like this, but didn't have home versions of vacuum sealers then. We used mostly already commercially canned foods right off the shelf, in the portion sized cans. They made for heavy bags for sure, and we just reused paper grocery bags we going from the store, but it still saved so much time and aggravation at the end of our day when it was time to put together dinners for 6 people!
My mom was a teacher, my stepdad was a draftsman for the piping systems on nuclear submarines; we lived about an hour from where they worked, since we had just moved the summer before. I was 7, 8 and 10 years older than my 3 siblings! So, I got "drafted" to be after-school babysitter for all 3 of them. The youngest wasn't even old enough to go to school yet, and the older 2 were both in 1st grade. The 2 oldest got home before I did (I was a sophomore in high school.) The baby brother spent his day at a sitters down the street, so I had to fetch him home. Then "ride herd" on the little darlings until about 6:00! Plus come up with dinner by then. The bags made it a whole lot easier to do that.
At 15, with school work to worry about, plus keeping 3 kids from killing each other, or me, plus cooking meals, folding laundry, etc., the last stress I needed was to make decisions about dinner for all of us!
Thanks for showing this. It's a great system, and more folks should take advantage of the whole idea!
One question- what about a hot bread, or a dessert mix for the end the hot meal? I can think of plenty of options!

Found a Ziplock bag which never got vacuum sealed, with a note 'needs 1 tbsp beef bouillon'. Added water to the hamburger stew, along with the bouillon and a small bag of dehydrated mushrooms from last year. Still good! These meals are inspiring so I am going to try some of Pam's recipes for some gift bags, I will be making up this month. Thanks for the ideas. 💚

I’m from Scotland and canning is not really a thing here but I’ve just bought myself a presto pressure canner and trying to learn as much as I can before it arrives. I love your videos! Thanks for sharing your wisdom, I hope to follow some of your recipes very soon 😀

@@RoseRedHomestead thank you very much. The problem with canning not being a thing in Scotland is that there’s no one to learn from! I’ve bought a couple of books from Ball and Weck but it’s not quite the same as being able to watch someone carrying out each step and talking you through it all, your tutorials are invaluable for that so thank you once again for sharing all your wisdom, I’m feeling a lot more confident to use my canner when it eventually arrives!
I think I might start with your apple pie filling and apple jelly with the leftovers, then build up to the more scary stuff ;)

Hello Rose, your meals in a bag are great! I have recently learned how to pressure can by your instructions! I really enjoy my canning adventures with you! Thank you so much. Now I do have two questions: 1. What size bag do you place the meals in & 2. How do you reconstitute your sour cream, do you add water? My family enjoys soup once in awhile but only make a meal of it in the winter when the soups are hearty. I am applying your principle of fast meals to canning the meat and vegetables separately. I've canned your hamburger , chicken, and roast beef and now I plan to also make your stroganoff and pulled pork. Then I will put those in bags with my own noodles canned potatoes etc. Thanks again, I really enjoy pressure canner and wonder why I never did before!

    • @RoseRedHomestead
      @RoseRedHomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Wow--you are really going strong! Good for you! We just ate a jar of stroganoff for supper this evening--so good. To 1/2 cup sour cream powder you add 1/4 cup cold water and beat with a fork. Well I just got done cooking my first “bag meal”. it was tomato beef and lentil soup. I really didn’t think it would be so delicious, absolutely fabulous! I’ve never pressure canned beef before and when I opened the jar of beef chunks there was white on the top and I thought it was some kind of mold or botulism growing, it was whiter than the fat. Scared me, I almost pitched it but I went on the Internet and looked it up and it turns out it’s perfectly fine and normal. I’m learning, thank you so much for making these videos!!!! On to my second bag meal!
