This game always confused when I saw it in stores. Instead of reading it as Resident Evil: Code Veronica X, I read it as Resident Evil X: Code Veronica. "And Sherry can be Elmo" Now I'm imagining adult Sherry with cat ears and a bell choker.
It's such a shame to have waited all these years for Pat to do a full LP of this game, and before the VOD is even up on YT to see him on Twitter saying he hated it.
Darkside has some good CVX stuff in general - Alfred having a kill house like a SWAT team would but full of real hazards is a great way of characterizing his military fetish while making it something playable.
On this episode of RE Marathon, Pat watches in horror as Steve tries to ruin the redfield lineage, finds himself fucked on all sides for having opinions, witnesses incest extreme, goes back in time (deletes progress), and perfects the Boivin family technique: The Dick Stab. How many controls will Pat flip in the stopped time? Is CVX really bad, or a victim of Crazy Talk? Does Steve need a harassment lawsuit? Does Alfred need a girlfriend? Find out no.. Oh shit, wesker's back, too.
So, I have vivid memories of this game from my childhood. I put the disc into the ps2, proceeded with the game up until the cutscene of you ascending the stairs and that scared me so bad that I screamed at my friend to turn the ps2 off. I have a similar experience with Re 2 which I played first except I got so scared of that one that I broke the disc on purpose and left it behind when we moved.
This is low key one of my first resident evils but I still love it it has some good atmosphere, fantastic music and it’s super cheesy but I love it despite its flaws
I'd have no problem with it as long as it only happens when you're really, really close to a zombie. That way the player gets a good risk/reward payoff
KaptainMorganWo it’s intended. Enemies were found on average to be “too tough” and “too deadly” due to excessive difficulty with moving and avoiding them. The solution was to make the knife deal multiple hits since the alternative was to rebuild the values of every enemy in the game, starting with their health and ending with their movement and attacking speeds and damage, which then may require editing of their animations so they don’t look completely garbage. It was a damage patch, and it was slapped out and never finished getting properly implemented.
This story is actually probably my second favorite in the entire series, that said, it is drop dead last in presentation of wtf is actually happening offscreen
@@Bl4ckD0g It's funny, at one point Pat specifically says it's not the same thing. With the response being "No it just hits them multiple times for some reason." You mean...like the framerate bug in REmake 2 Pat?

This game being long is no excuse for not wanting to do it on the old channel. You could've done 1 hour or 2 hour episodes even. And at least Matt being there would help fill the void where Pat isn't talking. Which happens alot in this. God i wish Matt was here
I've never played CVX and honestly I'm getting a vibe similar to DMC2 where it isn't even bad in a fun way or at the very least the good stuff just does not outweigh the bad also like DMC2 you can play CVX almost all the way through without using half of the combat mechanics.
It could, might even be a better game if it does, but we all know it's not gonna. At least not until after RE8, and honestly I'd rather see 8 at this point than another remake.
@@HumanShieldrpg I think CVX *could* be a fairly interesting story, the Ashford family background is creepy and weird enough to be interesting, especially if you put in the cut content about them being escaped Nazis who fled as the Reich fell (there's still pieces of this left in the game, like the Iron Crosses Alfred has, the Eagle plate, the Tiger tank, Lugers, using the virus to perfect/control humanity, and the, uh, Mengle doctor running a "work camp" with a crematory). Part of the stuff not really in the game is that Rockfort Island is originally somewhere with Spanish origins and that the Ashford base is built over a small village and its catacombs (the remaining village is supposed to be just past where the Palace and military base is but I don't think you even get a glimpse of it in the skybox), the natives used as an indentured work force or forced into Umbrella (Rodrigo is an island native.) I was suggesting this in another comment, but I would give them major props if they had the guts to remake RE4 and do an alternate take that's more grounded and does one of the many Fall of Umbrella storylines it was supposed to handle before they ended up dropping it for new material.
We could say that the chronicles games are the best remake we'll get for CVX honestly. Seems all but swept under the rug besides the multiple amount of times its released like Street Fighter II or RE4. Dreamcast Ps2/Gamecube(?) Ps3/360 Ps4 (ps2 emu) PC(?) I feel it needs a remake too.
Feels like Capcom are going to just straight up skip past Code Veronica and RE0 and the other spin off games because they’re considered below average entries in the series, no wonder they’re jumping straight to RE4. I’d love to see it redone also, but I’ve got my doubts.

1:33:34 during the asmr rant, that sound on a big stereo sounds like someone in the distance pounding on my front door. played it back just to be sure it was the audio.
Hyperbole aside, the game is perfectly fine (even in the context of the series as a whole). Especially if you had a dreamcast, this was the best survival horror got. Just because the game didn't "age well" doesn't mean there isn't a quality game there- you just have to put in a little more effort to appreciate it.
after beating REmake one and two i can say that in terms of story CVX is the game that DESPERATELY needs a REmake treatment. Doing so would make this game soooooo much better.
I'm on bloodthinners too because I am missing my inferior vena cava, lol. It really makes even minor surgeries impossible unless you're off the coumadin.
I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it was primarily the sound of this game that was putting people to sleep. Yeah, the gameplay is slower and lacks tension, but if I turn away from the screen it's very easy for me to phase out the whole stream and forget it's even there.
There is something so funny about going through your old Death Stranding videos where you were originally unimpressed with Monster. Now though you are just casually enjoying a purple Monster like its nothing. On that note, have you tried the energy drink Relentless?
This game is so dark that it makes me think they wanted to use some kind of flashlight in it, but they couldn't get the tech right so they just left it out but forgot to turn the brightness back up.
@@gaminggoddess85 I wish. Maybe then we'd actually see what's happening. Every room is absolutely drenched in shadows for some reason, almost as if to hide unfinished textures. And then the sounds lifted straight from RE2... my personal favorite is the "Oooo er ooo erm" zombie moan. It's simultaneously funny, sad and terrifying because it sounds like the zombie is trying to sing.
@@manpotion Reusing zombie moans and dog sounds is eh but reusing Claire's damage yell IS pretty lazy. I think there's a new zombie footstep sound though maybe? That's something. And also apparently Capcom CLAIMED they upgraded the graphics and lighting with this PS2 port but I bet if you compared CV and CVX side-by-side they're probably identical.
@@gaminggoddess85 I did notice the ladder-climbing noise is different. In 2 it literally sounds like someone hammering an anvil inside an aircraft hanger. In this it's more subtle. I also like the save room music, if nothing else. Honestly, even I can't tell the difference except compared to the original Dreamcast game. There were... let's see... 7 versions of Code Veronica X: the very first port for PS2, the extended cut, the Gamecube version, the PS3 and 360 HD remasters, the PS2 Classics version in 2013, followed by yet another PSN store release in 2017. Whew!

Him finally playing this got me to motivate me to play the version I got back in November. Now that I've beaten it, every criticism he makes is either wrong, exaggerated, or a few that are legit. Like, the length isn't bad at all, in fact the number of rooms in this game feels VERY low. Also the enemy respawn is perfect, they only come back when you've made story progress, but Pat goes through the game so efficiently he doesn't go back to old areas before they respawn. Also, while the knife is good, there's so much ammo in this game that there is no reason to not use your guns more. Probably the dumbest thing is that Pat acts like you can't beat the game without the magnum, but the magnum isn't obtainable until you are right before the final boss, who doesn't require it at all. The big thing Pat doesn't mention is how absolutely horrendously this game's key locations are. I NEEDED to use a guide so much because either there's no way to know where an item is, or you don't know how something can interact with something. It turns into just a constant fetch quest game. Previous games did this way better with doors and keys being connected, but here you better know some obscure bullshit to get through. I can't believe Pat remembers how to get through this game's story so efficiently.
He keeps saying the controls are shit compared to RE3, but I feel like he is comparing it to the modded, improved RE3 he just played, and not the original RE3. This CVX is a port and not modded that greatly if at all. So it's like, of course the controls are different and weird.

.... you know, i didn't think about this before, despite playing and beating this a number of times, but this game and revelations 2 have a lot of strange familiarities between one another.
Both have some punk-ass kid that Claire tags along on an island
Both have claire ultimately get incapacitated at the end of her adventure, until a muscle man (chris/barry) go to the island that claire was formerly on and backtracking her adventures
Both have to deal with some psycho pure-gene aryan up-their own ass villain which dies (or 'dies') during claire's adventures, but they have to deal with either their twin or revived versions of the deceased psycho as the muscle man
Both have the aryan up-their own ass pure-gene scientists have their own 'special virus' that is exclusive to them, such as the T-Veronica or T-Phobos Virus, alongside another previously existing virus such as the T-Virus and Ouroborus
Claire's final boss during her run is someone that was betrayed, either alexander ashford or neil fisher
Claire both has to deal with a mutated love interest, such as Steve or Neil, during the game and confront their mutation until both are ultimately killed
I really want to meet the person that wrote the story, more specifically Steve, like wtf.
CV is when RE became properly STUPID. The Ashford's are so goddamn cartoony and RE villains only got worse from there
@@mortified0 But the Spencer mansion existed in 1...that mansion is the true villain of the first game and it's cartoonishly dumb as hell.
I mean, world domination through viral contamination is so risky only a truly cartoonishly evil character would even attempt such a plan once. AND IT'S DONE SEVERAL TIMES IN THE SERIES.
6:48 look how good a games tester pat could have been, he found a bug before he even started the game, now that's some skills in bug finding by doing exactly nothing

Can't wait to watch Pat shit on low key one of my favourite resident evil games 😂😤 (I know the criticism is completely justified and the game has some harsh game ending moments if you don't conserve ammo and Steve but God damn I love the wild crazy shit they did in this entry)
This is one of my favorites too. Never understood why certain RE fans don’t like it.
Overall remake 2, re4, re7, veronica.classic style veronica,3,2
I'm glad to know that not conserving ammo and getting stuck is a "thing" and I didn't just totally break the game back when I played it. I still dislike the game for it, but it's just nice to know it's a known issue.
@@bvanbove the worst is the tyrant like if you use the bow gas rounds on the first encounter instead of the plane it can be legitimately a massive bitch which is why I learned to rotate saves if at all possible, despite pat jerking off over the cvx knife I didn't realise how OP it actually is makes me wanna play it again so I can be OP for boss encounters Ahaha
Terrible bosses and the moth hallway alone make this my most hated of the main Re games,. The only thing good about this game is Wesker everything else is awful.

This game always confused when I saw it in stores. Instead of reading it as Resident Evil: Code Veronica X, I read it as Resident Evil X: Code Veronica.
"And Sherry can be Elmo" Now I'm imagining adult Sherry with cat ears and a bell choker.
Fun fact, I bought CVX *exclusively* for the DMC demo and played that demo way more than the actual RE game.
Thank you for the good people that comment when the gameplay starts yall are the real heros
Pat here: I'd rather be playing 6

I like how Alfred and Alexia are twins but Alexia has a gigantic honker of a snout and Alfred doesn't
Steve's voice is UUUUHHHHH, it's sooooo much better in Darkside Chronicles
Darkside has some good CVX stuff in general - Alfred having a kill house like a SWAT team would but full of real hazards is a great way of characterizing his military fetish while making it something playable.
It's so much worse than I remember. He's just so whiny.
23:49
Phantom Pain looks different than I remember.
Knife was OP in Code Veronica.
This is low key one of my first resident evils but I still love it it has some good atmosphere, fantastic music and it’s super cheesy but I love it despite its flaws
You can hear the knife doing multiple hits every time it connects with the enemy. How did that make it past testing?
The testers obviously didn't report it because it made the game better.
I'd have no problem with it as long as it only happens when you're really, really close to a zombie. That way the player gets a good risk/reward payoff
>"How did that make it past testing?"
By working as intended.
If they do remake cvx, the one thing they need to change is give chris more unique areas to explore and not make the end game so shit
This story is actually probably my second favorite in the entire series, that said, it is drop dead last in presentation of wtf is actually happening offscreen
It seems the knife hits multiple times depending on how many frames it spends in a model.
It's the same thing as in RE2 remake if you can support a high framerate and play with it unlocked. That's why speedrunners love it.
@@Bl4ckD0g It's funny, at one point Pat specifically says it's not the same thing. With the response being "No it just hits them multiple times for some reason."

This game being long is no excuse for not wanting to do it on the old channel. You could've done 1 hour or 2 hour episodes even. And at least Matt being there would help fill the void where Pat isn't talking. Which happens alot in this. God i wish Matt was here
Good content for when you're sick.
I've never played CVX and honestly I'm getting a vibe similar to DMC2 where it isn't even bad in a fun way or at the very least the good stuff just does not outweigh the bad also like DMC2 you can play CVX almost all the way through without using half of the combat mechanics.
This could use the remake treatment
It could, might even be a better game if it does, but we all know it's not gonna. At least not until after RE8, and honestly I'd rather see 8 at this point than another remake.
Would not be opposed to this at all. I rather liked the environments in this game and would like to see them redone in the new engine.
Dreamcast
Ps2/Gamecube(?)
Ps3/360
Ps4 (ps2 emu)
PC(?)
I feel it needs a remake too.
Feels like Capcom are going to just straight up skip past Code Veronica and RE0 and the other spin off games because they’re considered below average entries in the series, no wonder they’re jumping straight to RE4. I’d love to see it redone also, but I’ve got my doubts.
17:15 That sounded awfully specific
Tbf if anyone could have made Code Veronica X entertaining on the old channel it would be Pat and Matt 😂
3:28:00 I always wondered if he had ever touched those Myst games but since he's terrified of slide puzzles I assumed his brain would melt just from looking at them.
pats fucking face during the fmv intro
I gave up at antarctica where the piosonus moths are. That corridor is ridicilous
i dunno, Leon's knife is pretty good too
Sure, but unless you’re blind you can see that it’s not “kill things in under 5 seconds” good
RE2Remakes knife is good as well but only for downed enemies so possibly every enemy and boss.
... that's a very small game window.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it was primarily the sound of this game that was putting people to sleep. Yeah, the gameplay is slower and lacks tension, but if I turn away from the screen it's very easy for me to phase out the whole stream and forget it's even there.
Speaking of familiar voices, Steve sounds like Kid Icarus from Captain N.

Fucking finally!!!!!! I’ve been waiting so long for this.
Edit: This is infuriating to watch.
This game is so dark that it makes me think they wanted to use some kind of flashlight in it, but they couldn't get the tech right so they just left it out but forgot to turn the brightness back up.
It's actually the other way around; the helicopter chase scene was stolen from CVX by Apocalypse.
But the director in the dvd commentary said they did in fact take it from the game.
@@MasterXploder88 well, yes! that's exactly what I'm saying. Pat is saying it's the other way around.
Yeeee! Just got my Birthday pizza and Pat uploads. Nice, thanks!
Is the gamma just really low by default or did the person responsible for lightmaps jump off a roof on the first day of development?
Isn't this the version with the "improved" lighting?
Whew!
gaminggoddess85 Most games re use assets or sound, that is normal, not lazy.
Look at any developers games, generally they re use sound and other assets in most of their games in one way or another.
"She talks to him like he's four years old."
Well, he acts like he's four years old.
Steve is Canadian
I can tell.
You can put your mind at ease! In the navy! In the navy!
