    Personally, I prefer the cleans on the HX Pedal. I feel the distortion settings are less crisp on the HX, but it would be a minor adjustment - and you may prefer it. There are more mids/bottom with the HX, but I feel it's heading towards a metal sound rather than rock. Just heading, mind you. Again, so much of this is a personal choice rather than right or wrong. For ease, I'd be taking the HX with me. My own "rig" is an EQ, Amplifire Pedal straight into a Milkman "The Amp" pedal which gives me 50 watts of beautiful cleans and crunch into almost anything. I was really impressed with Ryan from 60 Cycle Hum's use of the HX Stomp recently - a wide range of really useable sounds for a reasonable price.

    I prefer the Line 6 Hx.
    Visually it’s gorgeous and tidy (having ocd this is a must)
    Reliability - the less things that can go wrong the better. And less leads and pedals is exactly what you want!
    Sound- it’s sounds incredible , even better than your classic board.
    I’d stick with ya fav wah and the hx!

  • @TheNomios
    @TheNomios 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Kinda surprised - I like "cleans" a little better with HX (more presence and clarity, great for band situation), but as far as distortion goes its a win for pedalboard - HX seems a little over the top and unnatural to me. Great video and intro, appreciate timestamps, thanks! ♥

      Same opinion here. Maybe just turning up the tone and turning down the gain and/or level a bit on the distortion block of HX would bring it closer to PB distorted sound.

    • @ste2577

      Agreed, but I think you could dial in a very very nice distortion using the controls on the distortion itself and the 10 band eq, still very close though!

    It's soon 2019. Time to not be limited by cable and connection madness from the last century but concentrate on great and flawless guitar playing and sound. I built maybe a thousand boards the last 20 years with every pedal you can imagine using all kinds of cables, power supplies, loopers and rigs.
    Go modern. Sound is there.

    After owning both a large stompbox board and a HX effects, I can easily say that the HX effects will replace entire sections of Mod/Delay/Verb pedals. I still use a few analogue drive pedals with it, as the HX effects often resides in my FX loop.

  • @LauraSquirrel
    @LauraSquirrel 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Watching this again, I noticed that you mentioned rolling off much of the high end via the 10 band EQ that is on the HX. I use an MXR 10 band EQ, (I think that it's my second oldest piece of gear. I've had it since 2006.). Back when I used a Randall, I rolled off everything between 2K to 16K, due to that amp having a really piercing, icepicky sound that I grew to hate. Once I switched over to Oranges, I didn't need to do this anymore and I could shape that range for a change. It was so much better.

    Bridge clean HX
    Neck clean analogue
    Bridge distortion HX
    Neck distortion liked both, HX had a really cool overdriven fizz to it.
    They both sounded a little different, not sure you would be able to hear the difference with a band in a pub though, and not only is the HX small but you've got all the extras to experiment with

    Nice sounds all round. The HX def sounds slightly warmer and fatter although when playing the HX Neck clean it sounds like there is more treble as well, kinda scratchy. I don't think you can really sound bad with either the PB or HX but it would appear that the Hx set up is becoming more enticing to you. It makes sense in many ways.

    I think the HX clean tone has a little more hair on it, a subtle touch of grit and yes a bit fatter. The distorted tone on the HX is deffo fatter and more gainy than the analogue but the analogue sounds more Stratty to me which I like. I think the advantage of the HX is that you get all the crazy soundscapy stuff that you demoed so well on the HX video. I would spend forever lost in that stuff as my gigging days are probably over. I have a bunch of old analogue pedals, mostly EH etc but you have made me look for HX’s on eBay now. I had a TC G System and few years back but didn’t get on with it, too many menus and encoders to faff about with to change the settings, I gave up and sold it on! I just want simple knobs to turn I guess!

    What an intro! Just plain wow. I Prefer analogue as a rule, but have to admit the HX sounded really really good and I can see why your leaning towards it.

  • @RobCmusic
    @RobCmusic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I find it impossible to have an opinion on the HX vs separate pedals comparison when listening to somebody else demonstrating. I think the difference becomes apparent to the player more than anything else. I can imagine preferring either of the two on any given day depending on how I'm feeling and if I had the budget I would probably have both and make my decision from day to day.
    Being a regular gigging musician I definitely value a lightweight, small rig (especially as I also provide the sound system for most gigs). I have a pedalboard with 8 mini pedals, an amp (Quilter Micro Block) and a wah on a board that is about 12" x 8", so about HX size which means an HX would increase the size of my board!
    I would love all those extra fx from the HX though.
    As usual, lovely noises from you regardless of gear.

  • @antmax
    @antmax 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I heard something like you did. The cleans had a low mid boost but kept the signature single coil jangly strat sounds.
    Distortion lost a little of the jangle and some definition and got a similar mid boost. I thought the analog pedals just scraped it distorted.
    The sound that I guess is distinctive to your guitar came through in all the tones which is a good thing.
    I'm tempted to get a Helix of some kind. Basically have to choose between the HX or the Stomp at some point. It's too convenient and cost effective especially if you want to try out some new things. Plus I get frustrated with the clutter of individual mismatched pedals. Must have OCD of something,

    I so much love your playing, which I feel has already surpassed Frusciante. After watching many of his videos, both with RHCP and solo, it is far too repetitive, compared with you. He certainly has the chops, but perhaps he is holding back for some reason, which you are definitely NOT doing.
    I also very much appreciate and admire your vulnerability and complete lack of pretentiousness. How refreshing! And that you are giving so much of yourself to all of us. The video where you talk about your relationship with your grandmother was deeply moving, as was the song you wrote for her.
    As for the pedal boards or Line 6 HX, there is not a great difference. But as an acoustic pianist since age 5-1/2, I greatly prefer analogue sound to digital, so I vote for the pedals.

    Hmm
    Hx for cleans
    Analogue for dirt
    Almost sounds as if there is a compressor with the Hx especially on dirty fattening up the sound
    And perhaps more lower mids.
    The analogue gain also has more note definition I think
    But there isn't much to choose, and live who would notice the difference.
    The Hx is definitely more convenient for live use

    Analog is instant authentic Frusciante if that's your goal. I'd have to think it would cut like a knife in a band mix fwiw. I have an Origin 20h running thru a 2x12 greenback cab with a ds2 and jackhammer. Amp only clean w/o jackhammer I'm happy with Frusciante clean tone when I add jh-1 with your suggested settings it's not quite there and it's driving me nuts. JH-1 does tame the ds2 and I'm really close and I know it's in there somewhere but I'm struggling to get what you're getting

    Honestly, OMG the HX! It had more clarity, presence, bottom end and balls. Having said that, I did think when you were playing through the HX on the neck pickup with distortion the sound seemed a little cluttered, which didn't seem to happen on the bridge pickup - perhaps that's just a case of fiddling with the EQ a little. I DEFINITELY want a HX, just don't have the pennies for it unfortunately. Any chance of some gig footage of you using it?

      Indeed there is. If you press down both the footswitches at the same time the pedal bypasses. : )

    The HX sounds more muddy and warbly to me, not bad though, but compared I prefer your pedals

    I suspect it is the tone juice that thickens things up, although you seem to have had the same tone juice for a long time so idk, has that perhaps always been the same tone juice glass all along? or you just choose the same juice everytime? suspicious if you ask me...

    Dear Dave
    I wanted to know if you can create nice feedback noise with the Orange CR120H? Does it work as with a tube amp? Or does feedback depend on speakers etc.? I'm not an expert but I like noise.
    All the best

      It does indeed create very very nice feedback. Crank the gain on the dirty channel and away you go. :)

    Good Gravy sir..... Analog Angels or Digital Demons the choice is yours because only you know where your celestial Head space is.

      I love both but the HX is easier to get in live. Especially when the area your playing in is the size of a post it note. Hahaha. :)

      Dave Simpson thanks for the reply, good to hear.. I’m looking into getting the helix and I think the HX effects looks like the way forward to me.. don’t think I need all the amp & cab options.. probably get enough colour using inbuilt effects & EQ’s

    Did you try the 4 cable method with line HX....I've seen videos where the modulation, Delay, reverb and other FX sound great thru the FX LOOP while the O.D. Distortion and high gain sounds go thru the front of the amp....
