I borrowed this from my friend when I was 13. After getting past disc one I went out and purchased it for myself. I played it over and over. It's one of my favorites of all time and my favorite PS1 RPG. I don't understand why this and Shadow Hearts never received the praise they so rightly deserve.
The Additions are what the battles in the game so fun for me. I’m usually played RPG’s for the story and wasn’t someone who really enjoyed the turn based battles. But man, some of those Additions were tough to master and when you finally did, it was not only satisfying but also fun. Thanks for the throw back!

It's your favorite game of all time? I've never played it but it's on my PKGJ's PSX download list. I'm in love with my hacked PSV and am always trying to add new games to my system. I've over 200 games to play. But if this is your favorite game then maybe it will be very entertaining for me. I've the vast majority of Final Fantasy games already in my system. I enjoyed FF7 but maybe this game will be incredible. I've never experienced it before but if it's your favorite game than I can't wait to play it.

This is genuinely the number 1 game I've been hoping would get a remastered version! So many great things about this game, even the imperfections made it good. UGH.
There was an in game thing I use to do, go to the valley of the corrupt gravity, get into a fight with those spider ball looking monsters, you know the one with a ball head and like 4 legs sticking out the top, guard until they do the shield that prevents all damage, then make sure you have that auto addition completion ring equipped, then go and let loose on all additions on that thing, just make sure not to kill it or you have to find another one. That's how you quickly level up your dragoon level.
Good point on linearity, also notice that if you are further in the game and need to visit area on the disc 1 (e.g. seles) then you need to change disc for that! Very inconvenience.

I beat this when I was a teen. I had a quarter of some dank.. Beat the game Im 36.. I got a quarter of some dank with modded PS1 Classic and Im about to beat it again... Its one of like 3 games I sat and beat alone while blazed Im about to enter another dimension.. Legend of Dragoon...
One of the best RPGs I ever played. The game starts to become beautiful in Disc 2. The cities and locations were awesome. The story starts cranking up.
I think its like a rule that old ps1 gems that you can't get anywhere for less than an arm and a leg require encounter rates that if they tried to render all the monsters at once it would crash skynet.
Best game I have ever played back in my childhood, way ahead of its time was like reading an epic book story, now in my late 20s I'm playing again this masterpiece and hoping for a remastered version.
Hey nice review! Just want to add about addition, if you levelup all addition to level 5, you will unlock the last addition which has balance of more damage and spirit point.
I loved this game when I first played it, but it's one of the few older RPGs that can only play every once in a while, before I have to leave it alone, and I think it's the pacing... the linear mapping, the encounter rate, the story... it at no point in times feels relaxed... you don't really explore as you're constantly being pushed to the next objective, and the story doesn't really immerse you so much as it strings you along... a great game, but if they remake it, they really need to slow it down.
I hear so many people complain that grinding doesn't level you up.... thats a good thing though. It means that in this game you dont WANT to grind. If it was easier to level up the entire game would have to be harder so that you HAVE to grind, but since boss fights give tons of xp and items and additions naturally increases stats, your character level doesn't need to be ground out to max.
Better than any final fantasy game I've ever played. Land your combos or lose. Sort your items well or get sorted by the game. It's a journey explore the world side quest its a beautiful game. If you don't blow through the diolage the story's decent. My only gripe slight mis translations.
R3GARnator The Japanese Dragoons are from the pre flood times.. A lot of our true history has been kept from us but leaked in movies, games, music... Earth was different before the great flood.. Im not saying the stuff we see is 100% truth.. Its based loosely from the mythological pre flood world.. Humans used to live almost 1000 years There is nothing new under the sun.
Rare enemies like blue birds or rainbow birds drop 1000-3000 exp. They are not easy to grind but their actions change depending on your own. So if youre using save states, rare enemies can be grinded on for easy gold or exp

Yeah it was very linear but it was easy for kid me and i loved it. A third person open world remake where it transitions seamlessly into turn based combat would be awesome.
Having finished my third or fourth walkthrough of the game recently, I have to agree with your score. The gameplay, art and OST are pretty unique and fantastic, but the story, although decent and with some interesting lore and ideas, it is truly held back by its very bad localization, specially in the dialogue (for example, I hate how most NPCs have extremely dumb and redundant lines). I feel that some things were meant to be something deeper and more intriguing, but the translation warped them into confusing nonsense (like when Rose talks about some "insanity" of the Dragoons but it never has a proper explanation).
I think everyone is too critical of "linear" stories in games today. Do you complain when you don't get to choose what happens in a good book or a movie? Now I'm not saying open world games driven by player choices aren't fantastic. But if someone has a good story to tell, I want to experience THEIR story. I don't see this as a negative. It's a different way of telling a story and if you don't enjoy that, then that's an opinion and personal preference. Not the games fault. But that's also just my opinion and should be treated as such 😁
This will FOREVER be my 3rd game in my list of games that need to be remastered. (the list is #1 any... if not all of the suikoden series.... 2. is the classic amazing The Simpsons hit and run. An number 3 has always been this game. I remember playing this originally on the PS1 and made me a Sony Fan I remain this day staying thru the amazing Ps1 an dPs2 days... the iffy Ps3 days and then the PS4 amazing days. I also hope this if it does ever see a re-release will go on all console's so it can get love and studios can see the best most loved games if remastered and treated with care an love will PRINT MONEY when you sell it to us.
I liked the game so I'll only highlight the biggest frustrations with it. 1. the limited inventory space makes you ignore majority of the chests you find 2. Pacing is awful, this game is exposition heavy and I mean heavy, 1/3rd of it is you mashing through flavor dialogue and a lot of uneven story telling. 3. The battle animations even if you turn off the Dragoon transformation are super slow and after 20 hours of gameplay you are getting tired of it. If they do a remaster they should address the pacing of the game it's the biggest flaw it has. Some characters aren't that interesting either.

in my opinion stil the best JRPG of all time for me beats even FFX on 2nd and FF7 and FF8 both on 3rd place for me followed by wild arms (which was by the way my first one) The depth of the story is just amazing and I absolutely liked the combat mechanic. I also like the encounter rate most of the time because I like random encounters more than todays stupid standards as they were more challenging and more fun too and I didn't had to wait for enemys to respawn. The only good modern game that somehow managed to nail it for me was The last remnant by the way where you could link more enemys to have one big fight instead of lots of smaller ones which increased youre loot and rate of XP also The last Remnant features a similar idea of how to evolve in combat with the more often you use a specific skillset the more likely you gain strogner versions of it.

Honestly I've played tgis game 20 plus times over the years and the encounter rate never really bothered me. I guess I enjoyed the combat enough to not mind it. But then again i was the type to run in circles grinding any new addition I got to 80/80 uses as soon as I got the new addition lol. My favorite ones for dart were burning rush, and crush dance.
Just imagine open world legend of dragoon the dragon campiagn so big more lore than the witcher assassins creed and god of war combined it would take 1000 hours just to finish the game and another 500 hours for exploration get to play as wingles or dragoons the possibilites are endless
I cant end this game on my console when i was about 12-14 years old. The console was broken before i was turn on High school. Then i was end it on about 21-23yrs old when on studying in University. I played on emulator then use cheat engine 😬😂

LoD: Mediocrity the Jrpg It's so mediocre and completely wasted its unique Dragoon gimmick and to this day remains the one jrpg whose music did nothing for me and don't get me started on the laughable death scene early on. I think the most damning thing against this game is that worse jrpgs are more memorable than it. It's top to bottom mediocrity makes it seem worse than it actually is.

i hope Sony once again give life to this game, at least a remastered version. this is one of their first RPGs.

Sacnoth was founded by ex-Square members. This explains why Shadow Hearts (or rather, the other way around) is similar to LoD.

Dragoons were soldiers who wielded muskets from horseback at a time that was rare. I see the Japanese took it more... literally.

It is extremely unlikely that it would ever happen. This game didn't sell too well and development of games isn't priority for the Sony, who made it.
