This takes me back to my childhood in Ballymun. My sisters and I would get one each in the bakery after swimming every single day during the summer holidays. I had two homemade slices. After one bite, we were both back there.
After going to the baths yeah👌🏻 😋 I’ve a tipsy cake here on the channel too that you might like.Sorry for the late reply and Happy New Year to you and your sisters 🥳
Used to luv eating these growing up ☺️ in Northern Ireland we call them fruit squares. Delicious 😋 would luv a recipe for Paris buns if you’ve ever heard of them 🤔😉
So delighted to get this recipe. I grew up knowing that they were called Fruit slices. My mam used to have them for us when we came home for our lunch during our school days. Brilliant memories. Can't wait to make them. Thanks
This looks delicious. My mother grew up in Limerick county and was a baker, but we never had this growing up in Canada. It looks delicious. Going to try it. Thanks Chris. Love your channel.
The tip with the brush was good, never heard that. And your oven is the cleanest I've ever seen! This looks delicious. Cant wait to try it. Thanks bud.
i love Gur cake since i was a nipper always had a slice in plastic stuffed into my front jeans pocket. then go climbing walls and trees and it didnt matter if it was all mushed up it was still gorgeous to eat. and i always took some with me when i went on Gur with me friends. all the shops had the same flavour in those days but now there are different types but they are all still called Gur cake. my staple was Catherins bakery on Frances street she made them like i always remembered and they always tasted the same every time so how ever she made them they were great. i tend not to buy them any more cos they are so different in flavour. i typicaly do not like raisins or sultanas but when cathrin made Gur cake it was a blended mixture.....love finding your channel by the way im a northsider from Sheriff street but i now live in Tallaght for the past 40 years
Thanks a lot for watching the stuff pal. Me Granda is originally from Sheriff Street too. Catherine’s on Meath Street yeah? If you give this a go let us know how you get and Happy New Year. Sorry I’m just seeing these comments now. All the best, Chris 🇮🇪
Used to help my mum do the weekly shopping and was rewarded with a piece of Gur cake or tipsy cake and every now and again if there was a couple of extra Punts a coffee slice ❤️❤️❤️ This has become my favourite channel.... Cheers Chris 👍👍 🏰🏰🏰
My Mum was from Dublin, Gur cake was something she made quite a lot, she soaked the bread in a bit of milk & the fruit in cold tea. I have made it myself too, many times, it is still a strong family favourite, the last time I made it I used home made mincemeat leftover from Christmas cake/mince pies, it didn’t last long 😉😉 Thanks for sharing it & for the trip down memory lane ☘️☘️
Just made this and it was MASSIVE, Dublin-style. Wasn't sure about the icing sugar in the pastry but went with it and it was out of this world. There is zero Irish food here in Los Angeles, hubby almost cried when he tasted this, and he's American, lol. Thanks SO much for posting these videos Chris - Rosaleen
Hi I tried your recipe and must say It came out absolutely delicious. I adjusted the quantity of the tea, didn't require that much. The texture and taste is too good. Thank you for the recipe.
Howaya John! Yeah, the recipe is there at the very beginning of the video just pause it. If you’ve any hassle let me know and I’ll write it out of you. All the best, Chris 🇮🇪☘️
@@irishbakerabroad Cheers Chris for such a speedy reply. Just checked again on ingredients and all that came up was pastry ingredients. Basically half &half raisins and sugar. Baking powder and flour how much rest seems straight forward.. Got to try and surprise wife of 52 years as she got hooked on it when we settled back in Ireland. Keep up the great videos from a new fan John nChris 👍🥃🥃
Just found your channel! Love all the inspo for cakes defo gonna try these among others. I remember my granny making this it was savage, never knew what it was called ,Thanks for sharing! 🇮🇪

You’re a very rear diamond = Just perfect in the kitchen . Thank You , I am from across the pond , (UK ) x x x
I've never had a homemade Chester cake so decided to look for a receipe to try myself. Local bakery does the most amazing one but yours does look top notch. I look forward to trying it out. I'm not sure about the icing as I've never had it on one before but I'll give it a try 😊
I just happened upon your channel. I grew up eating this, it's called belly full or fruit slice in my Country. I have been looking for a recipe for ever, thank you so very much, I will be trying this. Much love from Trinidad, in the West Indies.
I live in County Carlow and we call this a Chester Cake. I'm gonna make it this weekend and wanted to see if the cooking time of 60 minutes at 180C is for a Fan oven, or a non-fan oven?
Never heard of this cake, but I will definitely make it. My mother used to make bread pudding and she made it similar to this, using milk instead of tea . We loved it. Made it a few times, myvhusbsnd wouldn't evrn try it, this time I wont tell him whats in it. 😂
TH-cam algorithm is some kind of witchcraft 😆. I wasn't even looking for this recipe, I had it suggested by TH-cam. I know this cake. In a polish town where I come from couple of bakeries was making it out of cake scraps. They called it "bajaderka". It was my favourite school snack. I had no clue its an Irish recipe. It blows my mind how TH-cam algorithm figured out I might be interested in this video, and it happens too often to be an coincidence. I wish I had some bread or cake scraps now 😂 thank you for the recipe, I'll definitely make it one day.
Used to love the Chester slice on the way home from the baths of a Friday, 10p into the baths 2p for the Chester slice nothing like it for the walk home. I'm 60 this year so that was 50 years ago in ballymun. I love your videos. I used to bake many moons ago and today for the first time in nearly 20 years I looked at a bag of flour. Wishing you great success with your channel.
Aah, that’s brilliant Marie! You should get back in to it. I’m from Coolock meself originally not too far away. If you ever need help with anything just give me a shout.
