Finding a large fossil skull with teeth

- I happened across this skull late in the afternoon and knew I had to come back and rescue it when I had the proper tools. It's roughly 4 million years old and would have been a very large animal. The retrieval took about 2 hours in freezing rain but it is well worth it!
A huge thanks to my supporters over at Patreon for financing this mission: / mamlambo

Great find. Can't wait for the reveal.
Glad you had someone with you. Would have hated for you to go back down the road to pick up the camera. Thank You.
My brother climbing K2 in the 80s forgot they had set up a camera ,lent from the BBC as part of a film competition , to record a long shot. Fortunately or not the weather turned bad forcing them back, so they had an excuse.
Chur Bro! Great effort to secure the goods on a crisp kiwi spring morning! Those teeth look amazing; love your work and can’t wait for the unveiling in the next drop. Cheers!
I love a mystery! Looking forward to seeing the completed piece! 🙂
🦖🦕.... I found your channel about a yr ago... You sir, have the kindest soul and ora 🙏🏻 Your passion and knowledge is unmatched! ... Just the joy of watching your talents and patience is enough to make a guy in horrible traffic smile 😂😂😂.... Thank you, for being YOU !!!! And helping us. Want to be better at being better humans 🎉
That was a freezing day when that southerly came through straight from Antarctica! What a cold time to be out digging!
It was sooo cold!
Always a good day when a Mamlambo vid drops!
Wow..good eyes...makes we wonder how many fossils I have seen and just didn't recognize
At 3:40 I was just thinking about how it must be a bit of a pain to set up a camera to film yourself walking and then have to go back and get it in that weather, and then the camera started walking after you.
👻
What a great catch and by the looks of it, just in time! Can't wait to see the finished prep on this one! It's a big fish! And by the looks of it, you have a lot of that fish's head! Awesome find! Even if it's a common one, that's an awesome find! 🎉😮❤
It's starting to look pretty good!
Great save, looking forward to seeing it fully cleaned up!
Wow! congratulations, what a brilliant find, well worth battling the elements to retrieve it. Can't wait to see the final prep.
Its being prepped right now!
Excellent find, again, Morne! I'm excited to see how it turns out after prep!
Bless you for your dedication! That weather looked awful!
So exciting. I felt bad for you in the cold wind and rain and then i thought, this is your happy place. I can't wait to see the finished product
😊
Such an amazing find! Thanks for taking us along with you!
I can think of you as the happiest and wealthiest person in the world when you are walking in the cold rainy day holding your precious new finds going home for a hot cup of coffee!!!!!!
Hey there, I worked with the University of Otago paleo team that extracted the large fossil shark you showed in one of your recent videos (which is quite a story in itself). I found your channel recently and have enjoyed the videos. Anyhow, I just wanted to suggest that for these softish rocks, and even up to medium hard rocks like limestone, you could consider investing in a rock saw - basically a chainsaw with a rock cutting blade on it. That would allow you to cut a double outline of cuts around the block and then you can chisel those sections out super fast. It would speed your extraction process up hugely because you’d only have to hand-dig the pedestal undercut and then pop the block off like you did here. You can see some footage of the saws we used like this in the videos of the Moa footprints being extracted from the Kyeburn River bed down south (which I wasn’t involved with). I hope that’s helpful!
I thought it's illegal in NZ to use power tools when fossicking?
@@inyenzi6378 I know this would apply to precious metals (and also permitted fossicking areas for those), but I'm not aware of any legislation around fossil collecting and power tools. As part of the university team, we used chainsaws (with rock blades), pneumatic tools run from an air compressor, and petrol-driven jack hammers to collect, and over the course of nearly a decade, I can't recall any discussion about any special permission being required for that. Private landowners permission was always required, and in rare instances where specimens were being collected from DOC land, permission from DOC (which usually limited the quantity of collection by weight). If there is any legislation around this, I would be very interested to see it.
We did talk about fossils being protected from export under the Protected Objects Act or Antiquities Act, and also the potential for the government to acquire fossils of national interest from private collections under those acts.
Additionally, the use of a chainsaw would generally do less damage to the neighbouring rock than a geology hammer, and also means the risk of damaging the fossil being collected is reduced.
You might have been wet, cold and needing coffee but your little boy grin says it all! Love your videos as you always make me smile along with you😊
Just wow, an amazing find man! Hope to see that prep soon:)
Crazy find! Can’t wait to see the fossil after prep.
Another mystery that I cant wait for you to solve my friend. Have a great week.👍👍😉
Video is up!
Your dedication is a true marvel to behold👏
Incredible find! And in soft matrix no less. Can hardly wait for the reveal! 😊
The bright rust brown will make for a colorful display. I hope it's mostly all there! ❤👍
Looking forward to seeing what you found ... cheers
Wow! What a challenging excavation in horrible weather. You defined the area of articulated bone very well. An admirable effort and I hope it preps out beyond all your expectations.
That certainly was miserable weather to be out in. Looking forward to the follow up video.
Wow awesome rescue! I'm excited to it finished and identified.
The things we do in the middle of a storm!. What an awesome find!.
My first thought was fish bone; Nice find Morne!
Glad I'm warm at home right now 😅 can't wait for the reveal dude
Oh, that's neat. Can't wait to see it when you've got it all the way out.
Such a cool find, Congrats!
Looking forward to the reveal 👍
Admire your dedication ❤
Cant wait to see it fully cleaned
Great find! Toothy fossils are the best!
Awwww you left us with a cliff hanger. Oh well cheers from 🇨🇦
I can’t wait to see what you have discovered.
That's astounding! A million probably people have walked over that place and not realised what they see!!? Well done... the rest of those shapes are also probably something? WoW... goet gedaan menheer.!!
Would say it was worth watching, a great find! Wonder how the finished result will look like!
Oh wow😍great find❤
That's awesome sir I can't wait to see it out of the sediment thank you for sharing this with us six stars brother
Nice work great dedication in the cold. A day can just bury it in sane or wash it to nothing.
yip! I was very glad to get it back in one piece!
Awesome!
Lucky you !
And you found a crazy Kamen as a cameraman in that s**t weather ?!
Looks quite easy indeed to uncover it of this "mud", but aren't you afraid the bones, teeth etc will disassemble ?
Thanks again for your videos !
great find✌️
Thanks 👍
Cool find! 🎉
I would absolutely love to do that... but I wouldn't stop till done and wreck my back n stuff, lol
Very wonderful good luck
That extraction would give me a twitchy stomach before and after. Worse after, lol. I keep the nerves reasonably under control until whatever delicate thing I'm doing is done, I guess😂!
Ooooo I can't wait!
must be cold, don't think I've ever seen you not in shorts!
I should have just gone in shorts, the long pants didn't really help!
0:02 - Thats what she said.
Jokes aside awesome piece of skull!
hopefully that soft matrix stabilizes.
It'd be a shame if the prep'd sedimentary walls crumble away leaving no support.
Looks like a fun find and a quick-moving prep.
I'd like to see the fossils you have in museums...cool
Many are
Nice to see you get 'proper' weather there too , it's all too often depicted as perfect blue skies and hobbits ......
I'm sure hoping it is unique to the area!👍🇺🇸
I already have the feeling this one is incredible. I will sacrifice some sleep but that is a small price to pay. 😅
Awesome find!!!
Interesting!!!
would love to do stuff like this but we have no fossils like this in our area
What species is it?
No idea yet!
Nice bone👏
Determination!!
Uhhh❤❤❤❤ can't wait to see what it is!!!!
Please keep us posted,The teeth are what I want to see. So I can compare.
I've done some more prepping, the teeth are looking great!
@@MamlamboFossils I found a shark jaw with teeth and gums in it 180 million years old so I really love aquatic beasts.
Muito lindo
Surely there are better ways to find large fossil skulls than with teeth.
A large knife with a thick spine is a better digging tool. It doesn't have to be very sharp.
This video is 💀 ☠️ 💀 ☠️
👍✌️
MAMLAMBO..................
EPIC :DDDDDDDDDD
🌟🌟
Gluten for punishment! 😅
Great video
Brave man to go in to that office today,,,, well worth it,, oxoxoxoxo🐨🐨🦘🦘
