- Sometimes you take a chance and it works out. It's usually not easy but it's all about the experience. Come along as we unload this 1960's era tool box made by Metal Box and Cabinet Corporation and see what wonders we discover waiting inside it's rusting drawers.

Well done. You found some great stuff. Dealing with mouse pissed boxes is such a joy. But that has been so common when dealing with tool hoarders.
Thanks! I see you've experienced that old tool box smell. :) It's like old car smell but not as pleasant.
TH-cam sent me. ....Glad I came out for the tour! tHanks for the video
Thanks! You've got an interesting youtube name for sure. :) There must be a backstory.
Hello @@floridarusticrepairs tHanks.
Remember those arcade games when the circus came to town? I put a dime in one of those machines and won a list of names.
That name is unique. Worth the dime for sure!@@Dancing_Alone_wRentals
A lot of nice tools in that box.
Yes, odd adventure but worth the trip for sure!
I would say you found a really nice stash. Can’t wait to see what you do with the tool boxes. Thank you!
Box video coming up soon! It turned out very different than I expected.
Those 3 sockets are Allen sockets, put an Allen of correct size in each one, and cut off the L portion and you've got three good Allen sockets.
Thanks, great idea! i have hundreds of spare Allen wrenches around from these old tool boxes.
im about to pick up a MBC el dorado bottom box for 125, my first rolling box and will be restored eventually to black
these are rare to see i found one in the pacific northwest not rotted out
That's great! Now I'm curious what it'll look like painted black.
Performance tools are sold thru Auto Value parts houses and some others
Thanks!
Those 6 point s-k’s are hex sockets. They’re just missing the hex portion of the socket. Cen-tech is an import tool company that been around a long time. Some are made in Japan. Some Korea. I’ve found the quality is pretty decent. One of the few I usually keep that aren’t USA
Thanks for the info on Cen-Tech! I looked them up but couldn't really figure out who made them or where. Much appreciated.
I lost a couple good finds trying to save a couple bucks. If it's a good buy I just pay up before it walks away. I picked up a very beat up 3 drawer Snap-On top chest from the 70's completely full of vintage mechanic tools, wrenches, sockets, Snap-On, Craftsman, SK, etc for $40. Altogether It weighed well over 100 lbs. I had no idea what I had until I got home. The box was missing the emblem but luckily it was in the box. Almost no rust either since everything was so covered in old grease. I guess I was first in line since a lot of people were asking about it.
Wow! that sounds like a fantastic deal! You do need to move quickly. Did you restore the box or just put it to work? A few months ago I bought this junky consumer grade Stanley box and was shocked to find it loaded with Snap On sockets. th-cam.com/video/CesF5JWjQvw/w-d-xo.html
@@floridarusticrepairs It wouldn't make sense to restore this box with the damage it has yet it will function for years to come. I think it looks good as it is with the wear and patina it has. I have cleaned it out, organized the tools, affixed the emblem, found a handle that is pretty close to the original, and had a key made for the lock. I also bought some other nice boxes this summer including an early 70's Snap-On 9 drawer in great condition for $75, a 70's Craftsman rolling toolbox with a top chest for $25, and and a modern Husky box that smelled of cigarette smoke for $20 that happened to filled with $200+ of tools.
You’re a lucky man. What a score! Just the tap and dice probably cost the $100 😎
Thanks! Yes, from back when Vermont American was still made in USA. I ended up passing that on to someone who needed it because II already have a decent set.
I am interested in the Vermont American tap and die set if you sell.
I have a set so I'm fine with letting this one go. I'm in FL though. Where are you located?
i am in southeast Alabama i have helped Richard and Christina some in videos and did one video at my place in fact they are coming here i think next month i found a old tractor they are going to start
OK. Let me see what I can do to get the set to you. @@DependableAutoTruck
@@floridarusticrepairs I have a few videos planning on doing some more in the near future
Just let me know
Do people restore these? Is it better or worse to leave it original? I have an el dorado, early 80’s
If they're decent I leave them as is but if they're ugly I restore them. They're not worth a lot either way but they sure look nicer in the garage when restored. I think your El Dorado box was also made by MBC so you've got a cool box. I did restore this one: th-cam.com/video/BJylMP1z3u0/w-d-xo.html
@@floridarusticrepairs correct it is made by MBC
FYI, those 5/32nd are hex sockets
Interesting. It's not something i've ever come across or needed.
Invest in a gallon of Evaporust for your cleanup, its money well spent!
Yes, for doing a bulk lot of tools a gallon of Evaporust would have been a better idea. Brushing on that Naval Jelly took a while.
I saw your video too late to help...dangit
If it's any consolation, I just ordered a gallon and will use it to clean up the Matco impact sockets. Thanks for the advice!@@shannonelliott6116
@@floridarusticrepairs ahh, it will make those impact sockets great...
If you don't know, evaporust works best if it's room temp or warmer..it lasts a very long time, just keep a lid on it..the newer it is the shorter time it takes to work. I've used it from 2 hours to 2 days..it will affect some paint..rinse off in warm water, then wire brush or scrub to your preference..again, that's in case you didn't know...I keep a jug around since I tried it...
@@floridarusticrepairs also, it varies in price from place to place, and it will go on sale..some of the TH-camrs have it 55 gallon drums!!
That sk is for a hex bit
Thanks, yes. I've come across a few of those where the hex bits were gone.
The tools alone are worth rnough if sold to cover your purchase price.
Yes, they'd pay for it if I wasn't such a pack rat when it comes to old tools. :)
10 fold
( Funny...everyone finds the SK 1/4" driver that I'm missing......everyone but ....)
It's a cool little ratchet. I oiled it and it broke free right away. Are they rare? I mostly have Craftsman but SK is a step up.
Happy Halloween @@floridarusticrepairs Ratchets are most cool.
I was looking at the driver. Green handled screwdriver style socket driver.
I have a mint condition set that had everything but the driver.
They are actually very useful tools because they double as an extension.
tHanks for the video!
MBC made Snap-On boxes in the past
Yes. Also, I found a Spartan Champion four box set that's also likely made by MBC. I did not repaint that one as it was in far nicer condition. th-cam.com/video/ndseRtJJOQI/w-d-xo.html
Yes, I watched that and at first glance it looked like snapon. Some noticble differences when looking closer. Never heard of champion though
You talked about how you could tell the people needed money. I kept expecting you to say you gave them another $100 because you realized the box and tools were worth more than even $200. 😢
Good point and in hindsight that would have been a decent thing to do. In my defense though, the entire experience was a bit unsettling. There was no street address on the property so I was sitting in my Suburban guessing that I was at the right place for ten minutes before she appeared, gestured to the barn and then disappeared again for ten more minutes while I stood outside. When she showed up again, she said very little and I paid her before really looking at the box and before I had begun unloading the tools. It was not a welcoming environment. After she was done trying to break the lock on the barn door I never saw her again. She disappeared to somewhere in one of the buildings on the property or maybe she left. It was getting dark when I put finally got the empty boxes into the truck so I just went home. I did send her a thank you message along with a photo of the restoration which she never responded to. Like I said, if I knew what I was in for I never would have gone.
Sweet suburban my guy!!
Thanks! Have you got one? I love my Suburban and have been all over the country with it over the last 10 years. It's over 200k miles now. Last year I decided to fix the rust on it and spray paint it. I get a lot of compliments on the hammered paint I used.
@@floridarusticrepairs yes I got a 03 z71 lifted on 35s. Love it as it was one of my dream trucks. Mines at 215k miles and running strong 💪🏿.
That is cool! There's nothing as useful as a Suburban. Mine has the limited slip and underbody shielding but I don't think they had a z71 Suburban in 2001. Only thing I'd trade mine for is a Suburban 2500 4x4 with the 8.1 @@gonzaf250
most high-end toolboxes 🧰 were avaliable in different configurations on the bottom boxes from 1 or more drawers and you could purchase separate drawers made the boxes a little more affordable and you could build it as you like different size drawers
i used to buy different piles of tools like you are
cool video
Thanks for the info! I've got this one all cleaned up and painted and now I'm on the hunt to add a middle box for it.
@floridarusticrepairs the intermediate boxes are hard to come by and alot of times are the smaller size I usually shim them with plywood if they don't sit right
@@danohstoolbox Interesting. I think these were made for Snap On so I may just find one of those and paint it to match. Hopefully it will be the same width.
@floridarusticrepairs with your bottom box pull one of the drawers and see what type of sliders it has and you might be able to get a drawer from another box and the sliders
@@danohstoolbox Good point but I ended up making a wooden cover to replace the missing metal one when I restored it. studio.th-cam.com/users/videoBJylMP1z3u0/edit
