  • Solutions to complex problems can be simple says Jack Andraka
Jack Andraka is a 15-year-old Maryland high school student who has invented an inexpensive and sensitive dipstick-like sensor for the rapid and early detection of pancreatic, ovarian, and lung cancers. He recently won the Gordon E. Moore top prize at Intel International Science and Engineering Fair as well as the Google Thinking Big Award for the project, addressing a large and seemingly impossible problem and finding an elegant solution with broad impact.
Jack is a member of the National Junior Wildwater Kayak team and has won numerous awards in national and international math competitions.
    About TEDx.
TEDx was created in the spirit of TED's mission, "ideas worth spreading." The program is designed to give communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level.
At TEDx events, a screening of TEDTalks videos -- or a combination of live presenters and TEDTalks videos -- sparks deep conversation and connections. TEDx events are fully planned and coordinated independently, on a community-by-community basis.

I agree! This is awesome! A cost-effective early detection method for identifying ovarian, lung and pancreatic cancer makes it possible to fight these types of cancer in their infancy stage, instead of waiting until it may be too late.

This boy is 15 yo, learned better way of detecting these cancers just by self educating through internet = Perfect example that kids should let them do what they wish after learning basics of reading, everyone could be the star of their passion from childhood, studies show that what more you learn in schools, and go by the books the less creative you become, if you are not allowed to follow your heart and dreams, you just become an ant for banks, and the education does it, not a mysterious "gift", most gifted artists/scientists never even finished their schools.
this guy just made way better test, than 60 years of "current high education/medicine schools can give". and that is the problem all over the world atm. People are not allowed to learn them self in schools what they want, unless they are young and have the passion/interest to make things better on their own time.
now days new inventions are made by mostly people under 20 yo, with low education, with passion/interest what they do.
i remember several times from my childhood where i did maths "my" way, different than the book had told me, and got exactly right answer, but got the test failed cause i did not do it by the book, it was just confusing to get the right answer but still get fail, i did ask my teacher always why i got fail even i got right answer, and teacher always said, we did not learn to count it that way from the book. Nope i got it right by my own way of thinking and it was just wrong by the teachers, i still do not understand it and im sure its still like this in most schools, and it depresses 6-9 year old kids most, they think they are creative and manage to solve puzzle, and then teacher says no that way is totally wrong, do it again like its said in the "book".
current education system all over the world is just to make people more stupid what more they "educate" themselves in schools. Have not met a single creative highly educated person so far. Most intellect people are the ones without high education and self learned what they have interest in. The might not look like it, but they surely know what they are talking, just through self educating.
world is better place with you Jack Andraka, thank you !

This kid is an incredible blend of brilliance, persistence and compassion. May he get the resources and support needed to create all the useful potentials that lie in wait. And isn't that what education and a healthy society is supposed to be about - for all of us? I love that part of his story includes both how the schools fostered and failed to support his passion for learning. Hopefully this exposure will help with the failures and boost education.
To Jack and all visionaries everywhere!

I am not sure if you are aware or not that the majority of people who are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer are diagnosed at stage 4. This means, especially with pancreatic cancer, there is very little chance of survival.
Therefore any progress for an earlier, easier diagnosis is a step in the right direction.
Some people, are unaware that the diagnosis and survival rates for this cancer haven't changed in 60 years.
Hopefully soon there will be a step for curing and fighting the cancer, however from were it often grows it is too difficult, or impossible to surgically remove. Also, stage 4 means it has spread... this often causes symptoms that mean the victim ends up in a&e and then leads to diagnosis.
Therefore i again say any step forward in early diagnosis is great.

    • @cosmokoopalings3278
      @cosmokoopalings3278 9 ปีที่แล้ว

Louise Holt It might... MIGHT detect pancreatic cancer early... but it might also cause a lot of false alarms.
Either way, a positive is a green light for the doctor to give you a CT scan to see where the tumor is. And if nothing shows up, you just got a CT scan for nothing, which means you got needlessly exposed to a bunch of X-rays, having several x-rays taken of you at once (this is why they don't try to detect cancer this way, unless they're reasonably certain you HAVE cancer at first) which raises the risk that you WILL have cancer even if you didn't have it in the first place. Not to mention CT scans are expensive... so, actually, if a test that causes more false positives than it saves lives were to pass approval, the cancer industry would love that $$$

This is one of the reasons academic papers should be free to access for all, the high costs to subscribe to journals (even to access one paper it can cost up to $50) it stifles innovation.
It was just lucky either this young man had the funds to buy papers or had some form of access to them otherwise he would have never developed this technique.
