  • Jack Andraka talks about how he developed a promising early detection test for pancreatic cancer that’s super cheap, effective and non-invasive - all before his 16th birthday.
A paper on carbon nanotubes, a biology lecture on antibodies and a flash of insight led 15-year-old Jack Andraka to design a cheaper, more sensitive cancer detector.
After Andraka’s proposal to build and test his idea for a pancreatic cancer detector was rejected from 199 labs, the teen landed at Johns Hopkins. There, he built his device using inexpensive strips of filter paper, carbon nanotubes and antibodies sensitive to mesothelin, a protein found in high levels in people with pancreatic cancer. When dipped in blood or urine, the mesothelin adheres to these antibodies and is detectable by predictable changes in the nanotubes’ electrical conductivity. In preliminary tests, Andraka’s invention has shown 100 percent accuracy. It also finds cancers earlier than current methods, costs a mere 3 cents and earned the high schooler the 2012 Intel Science Fair grand prize.

How is this not a thing already?? He came up with this years ago

Pancreatic cancer survivor here of 20 years. I had the Whipple procedure, fired my first oncologist and did my own research. Keep your system alkaline to help prevent cancer. I do baking soda in water at night and Bragg's apple cider vinegar in water in morning along with tea with lemon, cloves, and honey. Take charge of your own health.

is its true ?? can we cure advance pancreatic cancer with this measure ??

What a borderline moron, there is no such thing as "keep your system alkaline" and to also add that it will "prevent cancer" is the kind of malicious misinformation that got Steve Jobs killed. Questions for Science has a great episode on debunking "alkaline water". How do you ever expect to be taken seriously when you label lemon and vinegar as alkaline? And let's be serious here, unless you had a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is slow growing, you have only about a 1-5% chance of having survived it for 5 years.

Comments are saying he’s having difficulty acquiring a patent.

the test is at a stand still in progress since the criticisms of jacks invention and how he partially copied old research and since jack wanted a patent and was rejected hes been working on trying to get that patent but i have heard the test is available in some places but im not sure. I went to middle school and high school with jack i am a year older than him I was good friends with his brother luke. I used to be pretty close with his mother and father too since they were so involved with the school. but last i heard of jack he was working on getting that patent and then distributing everywhere once he has the patent but once again Im not 100% on that.

Hey man, we all know how that feels like. The important thing is that keep going. I've actually resumed a project of mine after his success and I'd love to get some advice from Jack. Do you happen to know his email?

    I have a bio-in-a-box about him
(Bio-in-a-box is a biography on note cards with a creation to match the card and you put it in a shoe box)
    Not that anyone cared

His speech would be better if he would cut 50% of funny anecdotes from it.
