Nice . If i may (after spending several seasons perfecting a different design)? All one needs is a single, non- metallic upright piece to hold the balance beam, rod, whatever. So simple i wished i'd thought of it a LOT sooner! First, just drill a hole not completely through the ice (must be at least ~2" deep). Set the upright piece of PVC pipe in this cavity at the angle you wish, and momentarily add the rod. Note the place on the ice directly under the rod tip when the rod is in its resting/waiting position. Remove the rod. Now drill a complete augur cavity at that marked place. Take the wetcuttings from the two augur applications, and with your boot compact them into the shallow hole holding the upright. Particularly if it is cold, its secure as can be. Saves weight, save bulk, and saves time setting up and taking down.
