I would not drive people to spotify from Google/TH-cam. What I have found out is that Google Ads are crazily great if you send them to TH-cam, so I would consider TH-cam as a discovery tool as we do for Spotify. 300$ budget can drive thousands of streams and hundreds of new followers. Trust me, those ads are incredible if you target user on TH-cam to watch your video. Unfortunately you get low retention (like in my case 15 to 30 seconds) but likes and followers (and streams) really grow.

I’ve been a silent watcher but these videos are gold, before you I could barely find one video on doing ANY type ads for music on any platform. So I’ve wasted a lot of money by doing trial and error stuff so thanks for taking the time and showing everything from scratch.

Example: instead of optimizing only for form fills or purchases - consider creating additional conversions for higher in the funnel tactics. Like email sign-ups, white-paper downloads, etc. Sure, this isn't $$ in your pocket TODAY...however, these are users who are INTERESTED in your product and have the potential to become paying customers down the line. It's funny because I've been my FB Ads account locked little time ago before they enable it again and I've tried Google Ads (again)...I really don't know if there is as much fake clicks as in FB..the CPC can really vary a lot between keywords when specified, try to find the "best" ones I'd say, if you use this. I used myself at the beginning (running google ads during several monthes) a list of 20 small sentences (a few words for each element) and I found one of the element was performing really better than the others.....What's more the learning curve of Google Algorithm is several days so the user really needs to be patient...It adjusts the Impressions against the performances toward times of the day, countries...It's clear when looking at the general curve of each campain...I just hope there is not as much fake click as in fb because my reports on toneden / Spotify show sometimes strange differences with FB or Google Ads reports (using international scale) ...I'd say it's very important to watch the Spotify results stream/listeners at the end of the day even if you see that results are super great low CPC many clicks etc on Google reports (these days comparing the results between FB and Google toward Spotify listeners and streams)...+ The keyword search list is the origin of the Google "Web browser" company and it's the real added value and big difference compared to Facebook Ads because in fact in FB this just can't be done (super-targetting users realtime intentions), and the results between word groups can be really suprinsingly different and optimized (CPC, View Rate etc etc). You hit the nail on the head when you said facebook tech support was terrible. My ad account got disabled, I reached out cause I had no idea why, And I kept getting the same automated message over and over with absolutly no indicator as to what I did wrong. Looking forward to testing out these google display ads as a possible alternative.

Great video, thanks Andrew! I tried Google Display Ads for a good month or two, and ended up deciding to stick with IG ads. Google Ads really improved over time to where I was getting like 2 cents per conversion (yup), and at least a few hundred visitors to my landing page every day. They clicked on different streaming links but Spotify was the #1. So why did I quit? Turns out the conversions I was getting weren't turning into listeners. I would get a whole bunch of conversions from places like Morocco or Bolivia, but have just 1 or 2 listeners from there on Spotify. I'm assuming they were bots. So I removed those countries from my audience, but it never really seemed like the conversions from Google Ads were true conversions (at least compared to my FB/IG campaigns). Hope you have better luck though! Also worth noting that I didn't do any of the website-level targeting in my campaign.
Would be so happy if you made an update video telling about how to set up google ad conversions using toneden. I just can't figure it out and there's nothing on the internet about it at all
Great video as always and very interesting perspective! Who would have thought about display ads? It would be interesting to see the quality of the conversions/streams obtained. If someone converts after seeing an image, or a video with sound off, how likely are they to turn into an actual listener? Still an opportunity to reach different people as you said though. My ad got limited by copyright. How do we proceed after that? I spoke to google ad rep and they told me to submit a webform with licencing documents and so on. What documents since I am the owner of the music and uploading it independently on Distrokid?
So this campaign is actually a Display Ad campaign, and it seems to be going quite well. I'll know more over time what percentage of people actually end up engaging on Spotify, too early to say anything for sure yet.
Thanks! I'll get into that along this journey of getting more into Google Ads. You'd basically do what I showed near the end in my TH-cam example, except you'd direct link to your TH-cam video instead of going to a landing page since its on-platform.

Nice post Andrew. I did the same and Google blocked my ads (several edits, and no luck) the final result was that you are not allowed to use a media player with a logo from a different company (e.g. not yours). I used a Wix site with the Spotify media player. Is it that I used a media player and not just a link? Quite disheartened with the marketing side of making music. All the AI and bots they used make this very hard. At no point have I tried to market dishonestly, and yet this is how they make me feel. I do appreciate they want a trusted market place, but it seems their ruleset is not intelligent enough and you the people don't have sufficient training. They just act like bots. Ironic giving the amount of misleading ads that are on google ads. Facebook also blocked my ad account because I clicked on "Business account" by mistake, and once clicked you need to prove you are a business to make it private again...catch 22.
This has been happening to everyone lately, it’s not just you. Some people get it back in a few days, other people a month, but you’ll get it back. Just make sure you submit your appeal ASAP.

I mean, this is not drop-shipping ad stuff so I hope that FB goes easier on “our” ads?? Until now I had no problems whatsoever... Please use ToneDen. If I decide to use Google ads I can’t code my own website, I’ve never coded in my life. Why make a website from scratch anyway when you can use a ToneDen Fanlink? People might be more likely to click through because they are more likely to recognize and trust the landing page
The reason why I couldn't use ToneDen is they don't seem to support Google Conversions. I contacted ToneDen to see if they can tell me if i'm just doing it wrong, or if they really don't support it. They have a place for a Google conversion ID but it doesn't work out of the box, it only tracks page views which isn't useful for this type of campaign. I spent 2 hours trying to make ToneDen work with Tag manager, but no matter what I did it wouldn't fire the event. Hopefully they get back to me and say its possible, and that i'm just doing it wrong. Its been quite a pain having to code these pages from scratch. I'm also working on making my code VERY easy for an artist to update, so if we're stuck with that i'll be giving out the code for it. The only downside to that is that you'd need a web hosting platform to post the page. I'm also trying to see if theirs another landing page company like FeatureFM or LinkFire that support this feature.
i think, especially with the low landing page conversion costs of facebook, this could be a good strategy: install fb pixel & google tracking tags on to your custom landing page to fire when people click the youtube or spotify buttons. at least that way you can accumulate click data and then start the google campaign once it can make its own version of a lookalike
My results with TikTok and Snapchat ads were quite bad, so i'd definitely say yes. However so far it seems like TH-cam ads are much better than the Google Ads, at least for what i'm doing. I made another video dedicated to TH-cam ads.
They just fucking banned me today. I was running a campaign fine then I duplicated it to run it for youtube as well and then I got banned AND they rejected my appeal. I’m fucked man
Hi Andrew... I feel you completely skewed numbers by adding Brazil into the list of countries to target. Brazil is a haven for bot clicks and fake traffic which can't be fully regulated like the U.S. market. If you also looked at your results, you'd see most of those conversions were in ... yes, Brazil and not the U.S. where almost all of us are from (at least not from Brazil). SO artists don't waste there money, I'd like to see what your follow up video was with real stats from the U.S. and whether you really recommend using Google Ads for artists. Artists BEWARE!
I'm trying to make my ad and the Image uploader isn't working at all. The whole "choose your images" section of the ad creator is just constantly loading and buffering and won't load anything. Everything else on the page is woking okay, so it's pretty odd.
Thanks! ToneDen doesn't seem to support the Google Conversion, I couldn't get it to work at least so I just coded my own page. You might be able to find another landing page service that supports it more easily, it was just faster for me to do it from scratch.
so the ad i created is not showing because the spotify logo is in the video I was told that i cant have spotify logo in the video . I am only wanting spotify users to click on the link. I wonder if facebook is going to say the same thing?

The timing of this... FB just BANNED ME. For being so awful to run a IG ad of my music video that didn’t even have curse words in it. I didn’t even get my ad disapproved my business manager got banned... If I manage to set up a new business manager can I run ads again on my IG account or is my IG account now totally screwed? I’ve never done anything shady on my account. I’m in shock about what to do man.
Submit an appeal and you’ll get it back, but it could take a month. This has been happening to everyone. You might be able to make a new business but then they might ban your entire personal ad account.

Which begs the question why ban my first if I can easily use the second? Only thing is my IG was connected to my now banned BM so I can’t connect it to a new one. I’m never going to be able to advertise from my IG account again. I think I’m fucked man.
youtube ads seem to cost about $0.04 per play spotify seems to be about $0.08 per play spotify has a slightly better short term ROI i believe, as sad as that is to say. however i believe being a successful youtuber is a career in the long term... hard to say the same for spotify.
i have been able to generate 172 subs from discovery video ads remarketing to those who watched in stream vid ad sequences. i haven’t tried display but i want to for list building. yt ads work well for lead gen in product/service based businesses from my affiliate marketing experience.

dude, my facebook ad account got banned. Everytime i try and create a new account it still bans me... And i even created a new email and got a new phone number and they still wont let me back on facebook. They've also glitched my IG account so now i cant switch back to a personal account because it keeps saying "There is still promotions running" although there are none still running. Im done with FB now. How do i use twitter ads?

When they've done that to me I basically just write out a document that looks reasonably official saying I authorize this ad account to have the rights to advertise the following copyrighted content of which I am the owner of, then I sign it and send it to them.

every time I try use google ads they allllllways get declined, usually for 'violent content'...when I post beats. when it does work though had some pretty good results
You must have some fire beats if they're flagging them for violent haha. A few experiments i've been running are for my metal / dubstep hybrid project, so lots of screaming vocals with dark lyrics, and that gets through fine.

One thing i'm noticing is for Display conversion campaigns you have to be very picky with the placements. If you just let Google choose placements you'll get a LOT of spammy game websites with obscenely high conversion rates.
This video is giving me some serious hope after being blocked by that POS known as Facebook for the 5th or 6th time (for no reason). I've been trying to get Hypeddit to work with Facebook for over a week now. While Hypeddit really suffers from poor documentation, I believe they're trying and their tech is good. I'd like to stick with them but it's becoming clear that working with Facebook is going to be a never ending battle. I swear, after a week of trial and error, getting kicked off due to their shady AI, and the like, I'm at a point where I should be able to run my ads. To my surprise, all my active (and working) custom conversions are not being displayed for selection when I go to create my ad set. Instead, I've just got a list of all the generic ones right above the area where you can create more custom conversions. It's almost as if Facebook itself is running off of multiple databases that are not in sync or something. That said, I'm going to study this video, read all the comments, and see if I can jump ship and get Hypeddit to work with Google Ads. I do see Hypeddit allows us to specify a Google Ads Tag ID and label in our gates and smartlinks.
I used both conversions and traffic campaigns directed to linktree and just focused on Spotify only. I had over 22,000 visits combined but almost no clicks at all on my links to Spotify. Why do you think that is? Is it because I had my pixel set up wrong? or did Facebook literally send thousands of bots to my landing page? So frustrating, because I dropped $50 per day and it was just a huge waste...next to no listeners or followers created on the Spotify side at all.

AND they’re rejected my appeal. I don’t have any drugs or curse words or anything in my music video. How’s your luck been since being banned?
Cool - I'll try and get it reinstated now the dust is settling on that. There was a genuine fraud on my account from Thai hackers... they managed to run about $300 worth of ads before I got them shut down via Paypal and Facebook - but then they banned me! I'm guessing the admins were overrun during the US election and so gave me the boot too, rather than try to appreciate that I was the one that reported the fraud!

Very informative! Thanks for doing this. Have you tried a YT ad to sell something such as a course? I am about to venture into that and felt that YT would be a better bet than FB as people are on YT searching for "how to" and since I teach that "how to" I might be able to get some conversions?
For my course its been 100% organic sales by mentioning it in my videos, but i'm sure I could run FB / YT ads to sell more copies. Eventually i'll probably go there, but at the same time i'd much rather have people who already know me and what I do inside my course. I think both platforms for selling courses make a lot of sense.

Great video as always and very interesting perspective! Who would have thought about display ads? It would be interesting to see the quality of the conversions/streams obtained. If someone converts after seeing an image, or a video with sound off, how likely are they to turn into an actual listener? Still an opportunity to reach different people as you said though. My ad got limited by copyright. How do we proceed after that? I spoke to google ad rep and they told me to submit a webform with licencing documents and so on. What documents since I am the owner of the music and uploading it independently on Distrokid?

So this campaign is actually a Display Ad campaign, and it seems to be going quite well. I'll know more over time what percentage of people actually end up engaging on Spotify, too early to say anything for sure yet.

Thanks! I'll get into that along this journey of getting more into Google Ads. You'd basically do what I showed near the end in my TH-cam example, except you'd direct link to your TH-cam video instead of going to a landing page since its on-platform.

TH-cam ads are good for music videos and views. Also it’s a good idea to keep them on TH-cam to listen to your music.
Nice post Andrew. I did the same and Google blocked my ads (several edits, and no luck) the final result was that you are not allowed to use a media player with a logo from a different company (e.g. not yours). I used a Wix site with the Spotify media player. Is it that I used a media player and not just a link?
Quite disheartened with the marketing side of making music. All the AI and bots they used make this very hard. At no point have I tried to market dishonestly, and yet this is how they make me feel. I do appreciate they want a trusted market place, but it seems their ruleset is not intelligent enough and you the people don't have sufficient training. They just act like bots. Ironic giving the amount of misleading ads that are on google ads.
Facebook also blocked my ad account because I clicked on "Business account" by mistake, and once clicked you need to prove you are a business to make it private again...catch 22.

Speaking of FB ad account ban: did you ever had any problems there? Like with those harmless ad creatives with no aggressive text etc.? Or any tips for avoiding problems? I mean, this is not drop-shipping ad stuff so I hope that FB goes easier on “our” ads??
Until now I had no problems whatsoever... I am just worried because those drop-shipping people tell you that everyone’s ad account gets banned someday, it’s just about if not when it’s getting blocked etc...

Please use ToneDen. If I decide to use Google ads I can’t code my own website, I’ve never coded in my life. Why make a website from scratch anyway when you can use a ToneDen Fanlink? People might be more likely to click through because they are more likely to recognize and trust the landing page
The reason why I couldn't use ToneDen is they don't seem to support Google Conversions. I contacted ToneDen to see if they can tell me if i'm just doing it wrong, or if they really don't support it. They have a place for a Google conversion ID but it doesn't work out of the box, it only tracks page views which isn't useful for this type of campaign.
I spent 2 hours trying to make ToneDen work with Tag manager, but no matter what I did it wouldn't fire the event. Hopefully they get back to me and say its possible, and that i'm just doing it wrong. Its been quite a pain having to code these pages from scratch.
I'm also working on making my code VERY easy for an artist to update, so if we're stuck with that i'll be giving out the code for it. The only downside to that is that you'd need a web hosting platform to post the page. I'm also trying to see if theirs another landing page company like FeatureFM or LinkFire that support this feature.

i think, especially with the low landing page conversion costs of facebook, this could be a good strategy: install fb pixel & google tracking tags on to your custom landing page to fire when people click the youtube or spotify buttons. at least that way you can accumulate click data and then start the google campaign once it can make its own version of a lookalike

My results with TikTok and Snapchat ads were quite bad, so i'd definitely say yes. However so far it seems like TH-cam ads are much better than the Google Ads, at least for what i'm doing. I made another video dedicated to TH-cam ads.

Hi Andrew... I feel you completely skewed numbers by adding Brazil into the list of countries to target. Brazil is a haven for bot clicks and fake traffic which can't be fully regulated like the U.S. market. If you also looked at your results, you'd see most of those conversions were in ... yes, Brazil and not the U.S. where almost all of us are from (at least not from Brazil). SO artists don't waste there money, I'd like to see what your follow up video was with real stats from the U.S. and whether you really recommend using Google Ads for artists. Artists BEWARE!

I'm trying to make my ad and the Image uploader isn't working at all. The whole "choose your images" section of the ad creator is just constantly loading and buffering and won't load anything. Everything else on the page is woking okay, so it's pretty odd.

Thanks! ToneDen doesn't seem to support the Google Conversion, I couldn't get it to work at least so I just coded my own page. You might be able to find another landing page service that supports it more easily, it was just faster for me to do it from scratch.

The timing of this... FB just BANNED ME. For being so awful to run a IG ad of my music video that didn’t even have curse words in it. I didn’t even get my ad disapproved my business manager got banned... If I manage to set up a new business manager can I run ads again on my IG account or is my IG account now totally screwed? I’ve never done anything shady on my account. I’m in shock about what to do man.
Submit an appeal and you’ll get it back, but it could take a month. This has been happening to everyone. You might be able to make a new business but then they might ban your entire personal ad account.

youtube ads seem to cost about $0.04 per play
spotify seems to be about $0.08 per play
spotify has a slightly better short term ROI i believe, as sad as that is to say. however i believe being a successful youtuber is a career in the long term... hard to say the same for spotify.

dude, my facebook ad account got banned. Everytime i try and create a new account it still bans me... And i even created a new email and got a new phone number and they still wont let me back on facebook. They've also glitched my IG account so now i cant switch back to a personal account because it keeps saying "There is still promotions running" although there are none still running. Im done with FB now. How do i use twitter ads?

When they've done that to me I basically just write out a document that looks reasonably official saying I authorize this ad account to have the rights to advertise the following copyrighted content of which I am the owner of, then I sign it and send it to them.

every time I try use google ads they allllllways get declined, usually for 'violent content'...when I post beats.

You must have some fire beats if they're flagging them for violent haha. A few experiments i've been running are for my metal / dubstep hybrid project, so lots of screaming vocals with dark lyrics, and that gets through fine.

One thing i'm noticing is for Display conversion campaigns you have to be very picky with the placements. If you just let Google choose placements you'll get a LOT of spammy game websites with obscenely high conversion rates.

This video is giving me some serious hope after being blocked by that POS known as Facebook for the 5th or 6th time (for no reason). I've been trying to get Hypeddit to work with Facebook for over a week now. While Hypeddit really suffers from poor documentation, I believe they're trying and their tech is good. I'd like to stick with them but it's becoming clear that working with Facebook is going to be a never ending battle. I swear, after a week of trial and error, getting kicked off due to their shady AI, and the like, I'm at a point where I should be able to run my ads. To my surprise, all my active (and working) custom conversions are not being displayed for selection when I go to create my ad set. Instead, I've just got a list of all the generic ones right above the area where you can create more custom conversions. It's almost as if Facebook itself is running off of multiple databases that are not in sync or something. That said, I'm going to study this video, read all the comments, and see if I can jump ship and get Hypeddit to work with Google Ads. I do see Hypeddit allows us to specify a Google Ads Tag ID and label in our gates and smartlinks.
I used both conversions and traffic campaigns directed to linktree and just focused on Spotify only.
I had over 22,000 visits combined but almost no clicks at all on my links to Spotify.
Why do you think that is? Is it because I had my pixel set up wrong? or did Facebook literally send thousands of bots to my landing page?
So frustrating, because I dropped $50 per day and it was just a huge waste...next to no listeners or followers created on the Spotify side at all.

It’s been happening to everyone lately so you’re not alone. I think it has to do with the US elections. Some people get restricted for a few days and others a month, but everyone gets it back with an apology from Facebook it seems.

AND they’re rejected my appeal. I don’t have any drugs or curse words or anything in my music video. How’s your luck been since being banned?
Cool - I'll try and get it reinstated now the dust is settling on that. There was a genuine fraud on my account from Thai hackers... they managed to run about $300 worth of ads before I got them shut down via Paypal and Facebook - but then they banned me! I'm guessing the admins were overrun during the US election and so gave me the boot too, rather than try to appreciate that I was the one that reported the fraud!

Very informative! Thanks for doing this. Have you tried a YT ad to sell something such as a course? I am about to venture into that and felt that YT would be a better bet than FB as people are on YT searching for "how to" and since I teach that "how to" I might be able to get some conversions?
For my course its been 100% organic sales by mentioning it in my videos, but i'm sure I could run FB / YT ads to sell more copies. Eventually i'll probably go there, but at the same time i'd much rather have people who already know me and what I do inside my course.
I think both platforms for selling courses make a lot of sense.
