TexasYoshi: Lifetime fan here as well, back to the mid-1970's. I really enjoyed watching Josh play for the Rangers also. I didn't really know what had happened to him until watching this video. If true, he short circuited a career that might have taken the Rangers to a third World Series. Hate to hear this type of self-abuse being the downfall of a once great player.

I’ll never forget how the rangers celebrated with non alcoholic champagne when they won their playoff series so josh could celebrate with them. We all have demons and josh Hamilton will forever be one of my favorite players because he was a real human being who went through real human struggles. A lot of times we see these guys as machines who are emotionless when in reality, most if not all struggle with something

Same here dude. I’ve loved baseball since I was a kid. I read his book in rehab and it gave me a lot of confidence to get clean and stay clean. His story is absolutely an encouragement, and also a warning of what can happen if relapse occurs. I hate to see the direction he went in after losing baseball and his parents. I really hope he finds his way back again. His story will always be a little part of my recovery. And he was my favorite for a long time. Especially knowing what could’ve happened. Ken caminitti died in an alley, doc gooden abused and was never the same pitcher, same with Daryl strawberry. Addiction is a terrible opponent to battle.

I just came across this video.
Regardless of how you feel about Josh's "choices" in life, he was, and always will be, one of the purest hitters and 5 tool players in my generation (I'm 55). And I will stand by that with granite feet. Unfortunately, we only got to see a mere glimpse of what could have been. What he could have done we'll never know. But it is refreshing to see a video about him that highlights the good, and not bad of his career.
Josh...wherever you are and whatever you're doing, I hope you have found peace in your life. You will always be one of my favorite ballplayers for what you did on the field.
And I'm saying this as a long time Rays fan knowing what you did in Texas was supposed to be in a Devil Rays uniform and watching your Rangers team beat us in the postseason 2 years in a row.
    Peace brother.

He was one the most obviously talented baseball players I ever saw. I could tell in spring training with the Reds that he was a one in a million talent. Kim - tried to become a starter despite being a good reliever, then got injured and messed up mechanics.
Jones - got lazy, gained weight. lost speed & changed swing to one of 'Hr-or-nothing'. Hit more Hrs as a result but he lost 5-tool player ability
Javy lopez - gradual decline. He simply got old, especially playing a demanding position of catcher
Rafael Furcal - body betrayed him at end of career which made him slow. Really shouldnt have played SS after leaving braves. Had an attitude problem too - got a DUI - around same time which prob didnt help.

I had the privilege to meet Josh Hamilton 2 times while he played for Texas . He was a true professional. He was honest, kind , and friendly. I just felt like we had known each other forever. We all make mistakes in our lives, I know I've made mine, but he manned up and got his life back on track and that is how a human being should be measured, not that he fell a few times but that he got up and made it work. He was one of the all time greats. I loved to watch him play the game of baseball. He was a real natural. I hope Josh is doing well today. He'll always be one of my favorite and memorable ball players. Remembered for the good that he did in the game of baseball, not the stumbles he may have encountered. He will always be in our family's prayers. Thank you Mr. Hamilton for the way you played the game.

Illicit Drug policies in a lot of sports leagues are very poorly handled in terms of providing support systems for suspended players. In a lot of leagues, the suspended player is basically banned from all team facilities and has little to no interaction with teammates or the organization. The policies often effectively put the player into forced isolation. Which is almost the worst possible thing to do to someone with drug abuse issues.

    • @HatWearingDog
      @HatWearingDog 5 ปีที่แล้ว

The Bigbear That’s exactly how I feel. Leagues could: A. Make more money off of players by eliminating long term suspensions for illicit drug abuse, and B. Ease the process of rehab for the player by offering support and privacy. Baseball, specifically, has a drug problem: Jose Fernandez has drugs in his system at death and we don’t quite know what happened to Tyler Skaggs who was found unresponsive in a hotel room.

That being said, I do find his story inspiring, and it is unfortunate that he fell quite low from his peak as a pro-MLB player. I truly don't know about drug/alcohol addiction; however, I still have the same respect for him as I did when he was a Ranger. Hamilton's homerun derby performance was by far the best performance in a homerun derby. He was hitting bombs up to 520ft. He had a ton of homeruns that were over 500ft. He wasn't just hitting homeruns that were barley going over the fence. He is a hall of famer in my opinion.

It was in May of 2012 against the Baltimore Orioles. He had 8 RBI and went 5-5 that night. The TV commentator Tom Grieve said that all they needed to complete that night would have been some lightning the night sky and a little blood on his uniform.

Josh is one of those players that made you watch the game. We went to church with him and he met my wife and I at the entrance gate of the neighborhood they lived in just to sign some of his books for us. Super guy with an addiction. Nobody wants to be addicted, but almost everyone has some type of it.
No judgement or condemnation here, just grace and a sigh of what could have been.
    Thanks Josh!

Josh Hamilton came by at my restaurant Souper Salad on a Sunday in 2016 while I was working with his daughter. I was kinda nervous since I can tell that was him. He seems ok at the time and chill but the day after, the news shown that he was going through surgery.

“Josh made it back home in Texas and the fans welcomed him with open arms. You could tell he was immediately more comfortable than playing in Los Angeles, which just felt right”
I mean... you can say it “felt right” for him, but damn, as an Angels fan, I gotta tell you, having to pay him $20.71 million in 2015 to play for a division rival (and make the playoffs), and then $52.82 million in 2016 and 2017, that didn’t feel right. It’s the Angels fault for giving him that contract and then trading him, but I wonder if he feels some kind of guilt for making all that money to do absolutely nothing. Especially considering he’s a Christian man. Hopefully he has made some considerably large donations to charity or something. Obviously the Angels are partly to blame for the way they handled that situation, but he essentially got an absurd amount of guaranteed money, didn’t perform, relapsed with his drug problems, blamed the Angels for not giving him the support system he needed, then went back to the Rangers and played better. When you know the whole story, it’s kinda tough to hear people say stuff like, “aww look at Hamilton happy and doing well in Texas again. What a feel-good story.”
He did not handle his situation in ANAHEIM (not LA by the way) well, and his contract was a major albatross around the Angels neck for many years.
And for those who would like to see Trout in the playoffs and think it’s a shame he hasn’t been there, think about what the Angels could have done with either 1. even a fraction of the performance of Hamilton they paid for, or 2. an extra $73 million over 3 years to get a better team around Trout.
In those 3 years, Trout put up a 10.5 WAR, 6.7 WAR in a season where he missed 2 months from injury, and a 10.2 WAR season.

Interesting recap of Hamilton's career. Oddly, what I remember most about him was a loooong stretch he went through where he'd come to bat, swing three times and strike out. This went on an on and on. He was with the Rangers then, and I think he blamed it on trying to quit chewing tobacco, or something to that effect.

I remember in a random CBS sports fantasy chat under Hamilton’s player profile a user said they knew people in the Angels clubhouse and that Hamilton was using big time. I didn’t think of this until this video but when you consider that another Angels pitcher tragically died via overdose; it makes you wonder how big of an issue this really was and how it’s impacted that franchise since.

His whole life he was around his parents until the wreck. With his parents being gone for the first time, and baseball being taken away from him due to injury he got caught up in the wrong crowd.
