Speaking as someone who operated pools for 10 years: To winterize: You want to drain the pipes, add antifreeze, and seal them. Water freezing will expand and crack them. However, DO NOT drain the pool! The change of pressure of filled/not filled over a season will actually crack the concrete of your walls. Water in the earth freezes and expands, and you need the pressure of the water to push back. That's an oversimplified explanation but you get the gist. I'd also recommend getting some sort of cover. Since this is custom, you'll likely have to make something custom fit. A sheet with stretchy loops, then some sturdy poles buried underground with hooks on top. Bury them so the hooks are barely visible and don't disrupt your aesthetic too much when in use. It goes a long way to keeping it clean so there less work getting it ready again for when you open it again. Otherwise leaves and other debris will get in and rot all winter. It is disgusting to clean it. Also, just throw in some chlorine tabs and possibly some algae-cide from time to time. Also, consult with a local pool company. The natural water of an area differs from region to region and you may need additional treatment. (for example where I live, the natural calcium of water is very low and we have to add more to avoid the water eroding it from the concrete. Other areas have too much and crusty calcium deposits start to form) The cover and chemicals will save you a lot of work reopening it. Otherwise the water will get very nasty and you will spend much more time cleaning it when you reopen it. You should still drain, clean, and refill it with fresh water when you reopen it.
@@super8bitvideos I wish that were the case. In the time I spent operating pools, 50% of what I did was fixing the mistakes of people who thought they knew what they were doing. Granted my boss wasn't selective and would hire any idiot who had gotten their CPO license, but even better managed facilities screwed up a lot. There were lots of jobs that only me and a select few others were allowed to tackle, because people are stupid. Common sense is not common. There are a lot of people who don't know water expands when it freezes. And even those that do miss interpret it. There is another high rated comment here that is telling people to drain the pool because water will expand cracking the walls and by draining the pool there won't be enough behind the walls to crack it. Its very wrong, and people following his advice are cutting the lifetime of their pools and hot tubs. And he's claiming more experience than me.
I can tell you spent a lot of time just planning your shots, executing them, and doing the final editing on them. Then trying to do the actual work on the project around the shots must have consumed a lot of time. The time lapse of the water filling from the perspective of the bench seat was a one-time opportunity you didn't fail to miss, and your slo-mo / real speed transitions at the end were spot on.

Gorgeous. Made a pond from the ground up with my dad when i was younger using rocks from our farm to surround it and make a waterfall. That was a lot of work. This is insane. Love it!

I am Perry and I install swimming pools here in North Dakota your best option will be to drain the pool blowout all the pipes and run some antifreeze through them so they don’t freeze and crack draining the hot tub will allow you to clean it up come spring and to put some water new freshwater inside also I really enjoy watching your videos you have been giving me so many building ideas so far thanks keep doing what you are doing
Lets be honest. We all wanted to make this or some of his builds in our lives at some point. But you know how much detail, hard work, passion, commitment and patience goes into it and you wave the idea away. This man just does it and takes joy in it. Massive respect. It looks insane and beautiful. Enjoy your hot spring with a nice cold beer.
I like that he pointed out that he had big concerns and the stress would get to him sometimes. It can be easy, as a viewer, to just assume the whole thing went smoothly and wasn't a big deal because we get to just see it from start to finish and not actually be involved with the logistics of it all.
It’s my first time watching one of your videos and boy was I impressed. For someone who’s never built a hot tub before that’s the most beautiful one I’ve ever seen! Wow! All the little touches, the mister, the lighting so many extras, you thought of everything. As an old person I might like the option of a gas water heater that I can turn on remotely so everything will be warm and cozy when I come out on a chilly night. Saying that, it’s perfect. Living in Southern California I pictured you going out there in the snow. I guess that’s not practical in your area. I didn’t know that the freezing temperatures would ruin the pipes.
I built a 2,000 gallon cement dunk pool and was thinking of using my potbelly stove to heat the water for use in the winter as a hot tub. Only problem it would have to constantly be heated. Maybe purchasing a jacuzzi heater for when not in use. Maybe I'm overthinking it. In the Midwest we get countless freeze thaw cycles. I have 1,1/2" pvc plumbing around foundation and below. To prevent cracked pvc from freezing I drain %90 of water then add antifreeze in the mix. When winter is over I flush everything out into Four, 5gallon containers for next time.
Thanks for watching! Yes the freezing will cause damage but it will be the spring thaw that will likely be a bigger problem. The ground shifts and tries to push everything around, will be interesting

Eh its gotta be a mixed bag for them. One side some cool stuff. Otherside hes approaching 30 and the money dropped on all of this stuff would be enough to have the down payment on a nice place with some acreage he could go nuts with. And in all reality itd be even more content possibilities upgrading the house and property.
I am blown away at the level of detail and intricacies of this build. And to make it up as you go along each day in your head…. Awesome. Most people would have likely quit two weeks in. Hats off and congrats to seeing it through. Many years of hot tub soaking to enjoy.
Made it to the end. As for wintering it up, I think it may be easier to drain it fully and cover it with a tent or tarp just to make spring time restart less hassle of fishing out any dropped foliage. Although, if you keep a low fire going in the heater. Stretch a large-ish canopy or frame wall tent over it so you could have a middle of Canadian winter personal hot spring to relax in while there's a foot or more of snow on the ground. If you're thinking about doing that in particular, you might want to take up some of the mulch and dirt to line with landscape felt then cover with a good five inches of river gravel to be the dressing and drying off area. The heat from the water would warm the temporary shelter space. So that space may evolve into a family gathering in winter to cook on a grill, enjoy a warm soak while everyone else is hemmed up in their houses.
What a beautiful project. Everything about it is just stunning. You can tell you put in so much effort to this build for so long and it paid off tremendously. Your builds never cease to amaze me and they always get better and better. You really have a gift to pull off these builds and have an amazing brother and family to help you out😂. It boggles my mind when i see people with such talent and ability, create beautiful projects like yours. So well done,I'm sure that your parents are thrilled to have sons like you and your brother work together giving your time and love.
If you do this yourself. One tip I have from building water features over the past twenty years is buy extra underlayment. Cut pieces of it and place them on the pond liner and under the boulders to prevent puncturing the liner. Double them or triple the pieces if you need to but PROTECT the liner!! That is all. Great build!
the editing on this video is unreal. you make a difficult task look easy through how smooth the editing is between the individual steps of construction. a really well explained video.
I realized less than 5 minutes into this video I could never put myself through all of that work. I did however watch until the end. Your ingenuity, work ethic, and desire to build something amazing for your parents to enjoy is truly admirable. Incredible job!
It helps when this is your actual job as opposed to a side project after you 8-12 hour work day, like it would be for most of us :). He was getting paid (A LOT) to build a cool side project.

The scope of your projects is always crazy. Other DIY channels tend to do smaller projects (and nothing wrong with that!) but I love the giant scope projects like this, it really lets my brain run wild

Hey Drew I'm a swimming pool contractor in Florida, as far as how to winterize your Homemade spa you definitely want to drain it. Unless you're going to heat it all winter because you did not waterproof the walls of the spa as you stated water will get behind them and for sure freeze and break the walls and seats and floor. There will also be some difficulties to overcome due to the exposed Pea gravel and voids in the rocks This will allow algae and bacteria to fester With no way to clean it. I know what you're thinking the chlorine will just kill it but that's not exactly true to keep levels within range for use there will be a gradient of sanitary water to water that is stagnant and filled with bacteria. this will cause you to have a constant battle with Staphylococcus cytoplasm and other various bacterial growths. My recommendation is every couple of weeks to bring the Spa to 50 parts per million chlorine to kill any bacteria before use skipping this step will result in hot tub rash hot tub lung and other infections. This project came out beautifully But it was definitely not built to code I don't expect this hot tub to last for more than five to 10 years😃
Thanks for your comment, our thoughts went in the same direction how to keep it clean. These 'beginner mistakes' can waste a lot of money and energy for the builder which is a pity. We are thinking of building a natural pool without use of chlorine etc but in winter time a bird will drown in it, a frog might die in it and rodents make use of it during the year. So easy clean or at least making it possible to clean it for health safety will be priority for us.
I live in FL and want to build a permanent above ground pool but probably need some engineer drawings as I want to do it legally. I'm near Jacksonville. Do you think any pool contractors would work with me lol or what steps would you recommend to get started?
@@4711Express I'm not sure why in this day and age there's such a fear of chlorine. chlorine has saved more lives than any other chemica.l It is what's made municipal tap water available and safe to drink for everyone in the United States, and it is the only reliable way to sanitize water for distribution
@@digi3218 first thing you need to do is get a site survey that will give you your setbacks and show where you're allowed to build. I see you said above ground pool why do you want to build your pool above ground? A freestanding pool made of concrete cost a lot more to build and to heat.

Philadelphia Mike here -- To answer your question about winterizing your hot tub -- I’ve been at pool builder for about 54 years -. Now retired. To winterize it - Blow all the water out of your plumbing grease your skimmers gaskets on your pumps - keep the pod filled with water -- Put some 6 x 6 posts in the water - If the water freezes, and expands. - it will push against the 6 x 6 post - and not against the walls -- The post will absorb the expansion --

Drew, first of all, that was incredible. An absolutely huge accomplishment that would intimidate 99.9% of people. I have to say that the winter is absolutely the best time of year to enjoy your awesome creation. My wife and I live in northern MI. and we probably use our hot tub 6-10 times from May-Oct. it is used approximately 70-100 times from Nov.- April. You would need to install an additional heat source of course. Awesome job that turned out absolutely stunning.

I really enjoyed watching the build and seeing the finished product. At night with the lights on and the fog/mist really looks cool. After reading through some comments from "professionals", about how difficult to clean and water behind the walls & freezing etc.. I would be kicking myself on not being able to plan far enough ahead to properly clean it or about water freezing behind the walls and it making everyone sick or being destroyed within a couple years with all the money & time that went into building it. I'd be wanting to keep it heated full time. Definately something to be proud of. Nice build.

Very unlikely he could build these with profit, TH-cam pays for the expenses and makes it worth doing this/these projects. In the end we all profit (he $, we content), but nobody would hire an amateur (I mean no disrespect) to build an overpriced hottub/pond in their backyard. I also doubt the longevity of this project. But it looks really really nice on TH-cam and gives inspiration.

Landscapers do projects like this on top of doing the rest of the properties all the time and make careers out of it. My cousin does it for a living. Plus TH-cam isn’t funding this his fans probably cover the majority of the funding through purchasing merchandise. TH-cam doesn’t pay out as well as they did back in the day. Ur crazy if u don’t think ppl make living out of this. I’ve been involved with the aquatics industry for 15yrs (fresh/salt/ponds/aquaculture). “Nobody would hire an amateur” lol everyone has started as an amateur plus this would be an incredible start on a resume within the field IF he even wanted to do this. I doubt he intends on doing it anyway I was just complementing the guy as best I can through txt cause he deserves it. He has proof that he could do these things you on the other hand don’t have any videos posted. You took what said and ran with it for no reason. you lack credibility not this guy he’s very talented and well rounded when it comes to diy builds.
Jtone, He said it cost him 20 grand to build this. The retail price would be 5 times that to pay the labor crew plus materials, and leave room for profit, and very few if any would pay that much for one of these.

Ive been waiting for your next vid. the other day I was showing my dad your videos and telling him that hopefully your next would come out soon. and boy did you deliver.
The unique shape and contorus would be difficult to cover effectively, and the small amount of water isn't worth working hard to clean next year. Drain it, blow out the pipes and plug. The pumps and filter should be fine to overwinter in place, as long as they're empty of water. Avoid leaving a filter cartridge/element in the filter body all winter though; if reusable, store it dry and indoors, otherwise discard and replace next year. Get a float actuated submersible pump and a short hose and set it up in the lowest area of the bottom to keep it mostly clean and free of water until you're ready to clean and refill next year.
@@DrewBuildsStuff Another tip is to use some antifreeze liquids like you use in car radiators in Winter climate and fill in places where there could be risk of water being left. When mixed with any water in the system it makes sure to stay liquid down to minus 14-20 celsius I believe. It can be difficult to blow out/vaccume every single drop. At next season you run some water to the system go "clean" it before filling it up.

*HOWEVER* with the amount of "tree debris" you're going to get in the water, I would install a sand filter along with the skimmer filter you have in pump house.

Gorgeous. Made a pond from the ground up with my dad when i was younger using rocks from our farm to surround it and make a waterfall. That was a lot of work. This is insane. Love it!

I am Perry and I install swimming pools here in North Dakota your best option will be to drain the pool blowout all the pipes and run some antifreeze through them so they don’t freeze and crack draining the hot tub will allow you to clean it up come spring and to put some water new freshwater inside also I really enjoy watching your videos you have been giving me so many building ideas so far thanks keep doing what you are doing

But you know how much detail, hard work, passion, commitment and patience goes into it and you wave the idea away. This man just does it and takes joy in it. Massive respect. I like that he pointed out that he had big concerns and the stress would get to him sometimes. It can be easy, as a viewer, to just assume the whole thing went smoothly and wasn't a big deal because we get to just see it from start to finish and not actually be involved with the logistics of it all.
I nearly cancelled this build 3 days in a row when I first started digging. More stress than I like in a build.

It’s my first time watching one of your videos and boy was I impressed. For someone who’s never built a hot tub before that’s the most beautiful one I’ve ever seen! Wow! All the little touches, the mister, the lighting so many extras, you thought of everything. As an old person I might like the option of a gas water heater that I can turn on remotely so everything will be warm and cozy when I come out on a chilly night. Saying that, it’s perfect. Living in Southern California I pictured you going out there in the snow. I guess that’s not practical in your area. I didn’t know that the freezing temperatures would ruin the pipes.

I built a 2,000 gallon cement dunk pool and was thinking of using my potbelly stove to heat the water for use in the winter as a hot tub. Only problem it would have to constantly be heated. Maybe purchasing a jacuzzi heater for when not in use. Maybe I'm overthinking it. In the Midwest we get countless freeze thaw cycles. I have 1,1/2" pvc plumbing around foundation and below. To prevent cracked pvc from freezing I drain %90 of water then add antifreeze in the mix. When winter is over I flush everything out into Four, 5gallon containers for next time.

Eh its gotta be a mixed bag for them. One side some cool stuff. Otherside hes approaching 30 and the money dropped on all of this stuff would be enough to have the down payment on a nice place with some acreage he could go nuts with. And in all reality itd be even more content possibilities upgrading the house and property.

Made it to the end. As for wintering it up, I think it may be easier to drain it fully and cover it with a tent or tarp just to make spring time restart less hassle of fishing out any dropped foliage.
Although, if you keep a low fire going in the heater. Stretch a large-ish canopy or frame wall tent over it so you could have a middle of Canadian winter personal hot spring to relax in while there's a foot or more of snow on the ground. If you're thinking about doing that in particular, you might want to take up some of the mulch and dirt to line with landscape felt then cover with a good five inches of river gravel to be the dressing and drying off area.
The heat from the water would warm the temporary shelter space. So that space may evolve into a family gathering in winter to cook on a grill, enjoy a warm soak while everyone else is hemmed up in their houses.
My brother is a pool builder, so I really appreciate your attention to detail and the heart and soul you put into it. Great Job.

If you do this yourself. One tip I have from building water features over the past twenty years is buy extra underlayment. Cut pieces of it and place them on the pond liner and under the boulders to prevent puncturing the liner. Double them or triple the pieces if you need to but PROTECT the liner!! That is all.

It helps when this is your actual job as opposed to a side project after you 8-12 hour work day, like it would be for most of us :). He was getting paid (A LOT) to build a cool side project.

Hey Drew I'm a swimming pool contractor in Florida, as far as how to winterize your Homemade spa you definitely want to drain it. Unless you're going to heat it all winter because you did not waterproof the walls of the spa as you stated water will get behind them and for sure freeze and break the walls and seats and floor. There will also be some difficulties to overcome due to the exposed Pea gravel and voids in the rocks This will allow algae and bacteria to fester With no way to clean it. I know what you're thinking the chlorine will just kill it but that's not exactly true to keep levels within range for use there will be a gradient of sanitary water to water that is stagnant and filled with bacteria. this will cause you to have a constant battle with Staphylococcus cytoplasm and other various bacterial growths. My recommendation is every couple of weeks to bring the Spa to 50 parts per million chlorine to kill any bacteria before use skipping this step will result in hot tub rash hot tub lung and other infections. This project came out beautifully But it was definitely not built to code I don't expect this hot tub to last for more than five to 10 years😃
Thanks for your comment, our thoughts went in the same direction how to keep it clean. These 'beginner mistakes' can waste a lot of money and energy for the builder which is a pity. We are thinking of building a natural pool without use of chlorine etc but in winter time a bird will drown in it, a frog might die in it and rodents make use of it during the year. So easy clean or at least making it possible to clean it for health safety will be priority for us.
I live in FL and want to build a permanent above ground pool but probably need some engineer drawings as I want to do it legally. I'm near Jacksonville. Do you think any pool contractors would work with me lol or what steps would you recommend to get started?

@@4711Express I'm not sure why in this day and age there's such a fear of chlorine. chlorine has saved more lives than any other chemica.l It is what's made municipal tap water available and safe to drink for everyone in the United States, and it is the only reliable way to sanitize water for distribution
@@digi3218 first thing you need to do is get a site survey that will give you your setbacks and show where you're allowed to build. I see you said above ground pool why do you want to build your pool above ground? A freestanding pool made of concrete cost a lot more to build and to heat.

To answer your question about winterizing your hot tub --
I’ve been at pool builder for about 54 years -. Now retired.
To winterize it - Blow all the water out of your plumbing grease your skimmers gaskets on your pumps - keep the pod filled with water -- Put some 6 x 6 posts in the water -
If the water freezes, and expands. - it will push against the 6 x 6 post - and not against the walls --
The post will absorb the expansion --

Drew, first of all, that was incredible. An absolutely huge accomplishment that would intimidate 99.9% of people. I have to say that the winter is absolutely the best time of year to enjoy your awesome creation. My wife and I live in northern MI. and we probably use our hot tub 6-10 times from May-Oct. it is used approximately 70-100 times from Nov.- April. You would need to install an additional heat source of course. Awesome job that turned out absolutely stunning.

I really enjoyed watching the build and seeing the finished product. At night with the lights on and the fog/mist really looks cool.
After reading through some comments from "professionals", about how difficult to clean and water behind the walls & freezing etc.. I would be kicking myself on not being able to plan far enough ahead to properly clean it or about water freezing behind the walls and it making everyone sick or being destroyed within a couple years with all the money & time that went into building it. I'd be wanting to keep it heated full time.

Very unlikely he could build these with profit, TH-cam pays for the expenses and makes it worth doing this/these projects. In the end we all profit (he $, we content), but nobody would hire an amateur (I mean no disrespect) to build an overpriced hottub/pond in their backyard. I also doubt the longevity of this project. But it looks really really nice on TH-cam and gives inspiration.
@@moos5221 I literally live in a neighborhood with neighbors that flew ppl just like him out to build ponds every person in the surrounding area has done so. Landscapers do projects like this on top of doing the rest of the properties all the time and make careers out of it. My cousin does it for a living. Plus TH-cam isn’t funding this his fans probably cover the majority of the funding through purchasing merchandise. TH-cam doesn’t pay out as well as they did back in the day. Ur crazy if u don’t think ppl make living out of this. I’ve been involved with the aquatics industry for 15yrs (fresh/salt/ponds/aquaculture). “Nobody would hire an amateur” lol everyone has started as an amateur plus this would be an incredible start on a resume within the field IF he even wanted to do this. I doubt he intends on doing it anyway I was just complementing the guy as best I can through txt cause he deserves it. He has proof that he could do these things you on the other hand don’t have any videos posted. You took what said and ran with it for no reason. you lack credibility not this guy he’s very talented and well rounded when it comes to diy builds.

He said it cost him 20 grand to build this. The retail price would be 5 times that to pay the labor crew plus materials, and leave room for profit, and very few if any would pay that much for one of these.

The unique shape and contorus would be difficult to cover effectively, and the small amount of water isn't worth working hard to clean next year. Drain it, blow out the pipes and plug. The pumps and filter should be fine to overwinter in place, as long as they're empty of water. Avoid leaving a filter cartridge/element in the filter body all winter though; if reusable, store it dry and indoors, otherwise discard and replace next year. Get a float actuated submersible pump and a short hose and set it up in the lowest area of the bottom to keep it mostly clean and free of water until you're ready to clean and refill next year.

@@DrewBuildsStuff Another tip is to use some antifreeze liquids like you use in car radiators in Winter climate and fill in places where there could be risk of water being left. When mixed with any water in the system it makes sure to stay liquid down to minus 14-20 celsius I believe. It can be difficult to blow out/vaccume every single drop. At next season you run some water to the system go "clean" it before filling it up.
