Pyramid schemes are illegal. Network marketing has been around for over 100 and is regulated by the direct selling association which is the equivalent of the financial conduct authority to banks. The idea of network marketing is that instead of paying corporations to sells products, the company pay distributors for doing just that. There are rules and regulations which all distributors should adhere to but unfortunately there are people are there who don’t abide by these rules, until they get caught out. You cannot be successful yourself unless you help other people be successful, this is where you train other people to do the same as you to make an income and the company pays you a thank you check for helping those become successful, this comes directly from the company. Much in the same way as corporations paying sales managers bonuses. Your other income is by selling products to your clients and making commission, the same as many sales people do. Network marketing companies don’t pay for advertisement, instead they use this money to pay the distributors a lucrative income. I hope that clears this up.

@White Man you need to remember that these people are isolated from their family and friends if they dont support them. By removing those people from your life the mlm counterparts become your closest confidants. You realise whats happening, the brainwashing, the isolation, the manipulation and they turn on you like snakes. The people you were manipulated into trusting are now your biggest enemy. And you have no one.

The weird thing is that MLMs have always been a thing, but I thought the prevalence of the internet would quash MLMs, because the truth about how they *don’t* make money for anyone (other than the people at the top) would be so widely disseminated that it would render MLMs extinct.
Instead, it’s gotten even *worse.* Pretty much every other person I went to middle school with is trying to sell LuLaRoe or some other crap or recruit someone on Facebook.
I guess I overestimated the survival instincts and general intuition of others.

They give them a family and threaten to remove it if they don't comply and shill.

I'm a Mormon who has lived in Utah for a couple of years now. It is SCARY how many MLM companies there are, but it makes sense as to why. MLMs largely target stay at home moms and with so many Mormon families here, it's easy to find a woman who's looking to make more money for their family. And because the church really encourages entrepreneurship and hard work, a lot of people fall victim to the idea that if they just work hard enough, they'll make that money. The people who are in the church, or claim they are, and start these companies are despicable. Thanks to more light being shed on MLMs through documentaries and r/antimlm, I hope we start to see a change.

I worked for an MLM for 6 months. It was basically a cult, was told to cut out everyone in my life who didn't agree with me working there. If you didn't sell enough you were shamed for it at employee meetings. I was told it was all about recruiting new people to earn decent money, but I never got the chance to do that. My friend was fired for taking 1 day off a month to go and see her son who lived 80 miles away. I was fired because I took a week off, as I was in a car accident and had a bad head injury, so obviously I couldn't work. It was messed up, I can't believe it's legal tbh, because you're technically "self employed" the company can take no responsibility.

    • @EmmasonYT
      @EmmasonYT 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

The MLM I worked for mostly involved selling door-to-door, we had to drive for up to 3 hours to the location we were selling in. I got fired and replaced because there were only limited spaces in the cars - Most of us didn't drive cuz we were 18-20 and couldn't afford a car on the commission salary.
As we were technically 'self-employed' I wasn't told "you're fired", just not to come in on Monday, as my manager wouldn't have given me a space in a car, so I couldn't work.

The problem comes down to price. Since there is such a huge 'upline' that needs to get paid, there is no way that the product can be priced competitively. It is easy to find great deals online for a fraction of the cost, making it impossible for MLMs to compete. Most MLMs are 'me-too' companies that rarely offer anything that is better than what is currently on the market.

You need the fl triangle to get out the full potential.
But, if you want to help an entire family with this product, the family must spend hundred of $/€
Not many families out there can spend so much money.
And yes, the business model is not the best at all.
Some companies have slightly better models.
Kyanis is honestly the first one I never completely understood because it is so difficult, even those people who make already 5 figures could not explain to 100% how it works.

A family member of mine would always drag me to MLMs. Sometimes they would be inconspicuous but the general incentive of recruiting others beneath you to "start your own business" always gave it away (also the obligatory "pay $x amount to become a member/recruiter/etc.). More than enough cases happened where the family member would encounter the same people from past MLMs that crashed and burned. Biggest red flag. It's not business if they can't stay in a stable business.
Also, when they say it's an opportunity to start your own business, it's not. You are probably just an independent commissioned manager (at best if in terms of money) who is managing more suckers below you and the upper levels gaining the big bags. Why is the company earning millions of the people that sign up for them can't even earn a single buck most of the time?

Exactly, if the product had real market value, the company would sell it themselves. But they make more money selling the products to their own distributors rather than actual end customers. For them, a distributor is like a guaranteed consumer. And when they say "distributors don't have to buy inventory because they can just sell through the website" it is true, but then, the distributor pays for the right to that website. Another thing is, how can you sell a product you don't even know and haven't tried yourself? So what do they do? buy it for themselves so then they can tell people about it to appear more genuine. They also have to buy samples to send their customers. So in conclusion, the distributors don't have to keep inventory BUT have to pay for the website, have to meet a quota to remind active as a distributor, have to buy samples, have to buy the product to try it etc. The distributor is the actual customer.

The only way to make it in MLM is to convince your recruits to invest at least over 1000$ and teach them to do the same with their recruits. If you recruit 10 people in a month and convince them to invest over 1000$, that is a huge commission. It’s only by recruiting people you make money but recruiting is hard so it’s a 1% chance to make it. If you don’t recruit and only sell, you will make less than someone at minimum wage. Even the FTC is the USA says this: If you’re considering joining an MLM, know that some MLMs - even ones that aren’t pyramid schemes - may not be a wise investment.

My question is where do they get the inventory? They must be buying or making cheap product with some sort of fancy packaging and then over charging because of the sales pitch and not the quality of the product. I always say "if I wasn't thinking about buying an item, what makes you think that coming to my door will make me want it?" I know what I want and "when" I need it. Unbeknownst to me, there was a girl at work who had started selling this type of stuff and another girl who had bought a lipstick was showing it to me, when I asked how much it was, I said "My God that's expensive!" while the MLM seller was sitting there. Needless to say she didn't try her pressure sales pitch with me.

In Brazil, we have an expression that says " if the offerings are too high, the saint will be suspicious". So, whenever they say " its an amazing opportunity", " You can make as much money as you like", " I have known people who became financially free in 18 months". This all sounds like bullshit to me.

People who complain about MLM are usually the ones not making money. MLM does require the skill of being able to sale but most people can't stomach rejection and are unwilling to suck before they become better. It takes most people a couple years before their business takes off but most aren't consistent enough to see results. I wish you would have interviewed someone who is actually doing well in MLM and not gone after a clearly biased opinion. I know people where MLM has changed their lives for the better. And if you don't think you are in a pyramid ask your boss how much he makes off your labor and then ask his boss how much he makes off of your boss's labor, and so on.

It's a business like anything else. If you can sell then the sky is the limit. If you can't sell then you will fail. Irregardless of the business structure it comes down to just that.
The people who are claiming negative experiences are people that made the devision to put money that they didn't have into a business that they weren't very good at. Bad call. It happens. It takes money to make money but it's not guaranteed.
Building a team of your own is crucial in any business. Not everyone has what it takes and those people get eliminated very quickly. It's not a cult.

Anyone who is questioning themselves if they should join an MLM: Read their Income Disclosure statements that they're required to provide annually.
There is a reason that usually 98-99% lose money or only break even: Only the people at the top of the pyramid actually make money.
If you're one of those 1% that has, you only did so by manipulating others that they too can have that dream.

I’m in an MLM and the reason I joined this one in particular...most of the top earners in the company don’t even have that high of a ranking. If a MLM is reliant on recruitment and NOT quality product and making personal sales, I don’t think it’s worth it. At least not for me... that’s when I get red flags.

I’ve been chastised for not wanting to save on taxes by running my own business. I’ve had peeps message me about a common friend pushing product, spewing company lines, asking me if she’s cuckoo. It’s affected relationships, on and on. I sold Watkins for a couple years and I was my biggest customer and the write off was diddly. Got out of it. The other one I tried was for myself, Pruvit, didn’t push it, quit cause it didn’t benefit me. Would love to hear more about the wonder supplements being peddled in the states.

There is a lot of people that do Anti-MLM content and its really good however I do agree this would have been a better insigh from bbc3 including with younique's 'charity' work as they only want people who have never had a mental illness after their trauma of sexual abuse. I hope more documentaries look into MLMs to make people more aware of the risks.

The Philippines is bombarded with MLM or Networking or Pyramid Scheme companies that are not strictly regulated for as long as a company has business permit. Even the products are not regulated as long as "No Approved Therapeutic Claims" are put on the labels.

I had a message from a girl I used to go to school with. I havent spoken to her in years. She was really nice on the messages then I realized she was trying to recruit me to her MLM scheme she was involved with. I had a bad feeling about it straight away and stopped replying. The products that the MLM's sell are soooo expensive? You could go to boots / superdrug etc and get the same thing. It's sad because these girls that we knew that are sending out these messages have been sucked it and they are now pestering their friends list to get involved too:( I hope these girls won't get into alot of debt and can get out one day.

Starting a business is hard. Learning new skills is hard. Yes it can be cult like, but so can any company organization. Network Marketing is the best opportunity for anyone from any background to create extraordinary levels of success. The personal development aspect of the business is the best side affect of taking part in Network Marketing. No matter what your business results, your life almost always improves as a result of being plugged into a positive supportive culture that does personal development. That is assuming you take part in the personal development side of things.
The bullying is not good. You don't need to cut people out completely nor should anyone ever be bullied for quitting. That's plain wrong. The removing people part is about creating boundaries in your life and surrounding yourself with like minded people. Usually it takes a while for your family or friends to come around to understanding and supporting network marketing, but if you work on yourself and take your business seriously, they usually come around to your support.

I do MLM and basically make the same as I put in. But as a physically disabled, legally blind person I couldn’t “get a real job.” I’m thankful the option is there because it makes me feel like I have purpose or can contribute to society. I do not attend the training crap or push sales. If people are not interested, so be it. I’ve also run businesses that are not MLM and continue to do so as well. I certainly would love to make enough money to start my respite, retreat, therapy centre but for now I have enough to eat more than bread and water and take care of my animals. Just a different perspective.
