- Chanctonbury Ring: A Brief Summary
Chanctonbury Ring is a hill fort based ring of trees on the South Downs, on the border of the civil parishes of Washington and Wiston, West Sussex. A ridgeway, now part of the South Downs Way, runs along the hill.
This video shows the Ring on a sunny afternoon on Good Friday, however as dusk begins to set in, it develops a very different atmosphere. Local legend has it that the Devil can be summoned by running around the clump of trees seven times anti-clockwise. When he appears he will offer you a bowl of soup in exchange for your soul.
More recently, Chanctonbury Ring has become a site for witchcraft and sacrificial ceremonies. It also has a connection with UFOs, ghosts and strange forces. On night walks with friends, particularly in winter, we all agree that the place holds a strange atmosphere.
