Well, Bianca, I'm mad at you! I've been sewing since 7th grade -- around 1971 -- so about 50 years. I'm a very good seamstress/tailor. I use commercial patterns and spend several hours altering them to fit my body -- or someone else's body. Because of you, I've learned to make block patterns. What freedom!! Thank you so much for teaching me to do this. I thought it was much more difficult than it is. You're a wonderful teacher. Now, what do I do with the more than 2000 commercial patterns that I own???!!! This is your fault!!!! You're absolutely terrific!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I love this subtle geekery. I'm not goth and would never wear a coffin, but the concept of subtly incorporating personality appeals to me very much... Like.. I could see a Sims plumbob being able to be incorporated in a similar way. Or if you love like... badminton? That would be a really fun series. Trying to incorporate different hobbies or other stuff in projects
It feels like the cupping at the neckline would be perfect for cradling a large, dramatically-oversized necklace or infinity-scarf-analog, like a pile of looped faux ivy strands or a chunky gothic chain. The floops would then serve as a sort of hold-fast and frame to keep the drama centered on the dress and contained from excess movement.
Tying off gathering threads is a trick I learned from you, and I think it makes my gathering look better. If you don’t tie off the threads, all of the gathering gets concentrated in the middle, rather than distributing it in the whole area that the design is supposed to have gathering in. I don’t see how tying off the threads could be a problem.
Such a pretty year round gothic dress! I am a bit of a devotee to brown clothing, so I'm very excited to see you making something in brown fabric 😂 I find that brown effortlessly pairs with a wider array colours than either navy or black, and as a fan of jewel tones, that's my dream in life 😂
Very pretty! I’d like to see this dress done with a fabric that has a directional nap/texture (I think those are the correct terms), so that the coffin part would stand out just slightly more if it was cut on the opposite grain or flipped grain. Goodness I hope I’m making sense trying to explain what I’m thinking.
I can't wait to try to make this! I love it so much 😍 It would be funny to get a different color table and STILL call it the blue patterning table of doom! It could be like an inside joke between you and all of us who have been here and all the new people will wonder what the heck you're on that you can't tell what color the table is 🤣
Bianca the dress is exemplary, as per usual!!The color is so right, and the fullness into the neckline gives the idea of a lapel almost, which just adds to the chic, noir vibes. 10/10 and I hope you get better soon!!!
Sewing a 1940’s dress out of green rayon, and boy is it, as you say, “floopy “. Struggle is real. Keep sewing those gothic inspired dresses. They are fabulous 👏👏👏
This design was good timing for me. I’m planning to do a pencil skirt with some pleats like this, so it was nice to see how a skirt like that fits and moves.
Ohhh Wow! So wonderful. It looks amazing. Love seeing these gorgeous Rayon crepes being made up in these ways. It’s a really sophisticated, slightly gothic style dress. But as you said, so subtle and in this case less obvious really is more. I wouldn’t never have thought to even think of the inverted shape as an upside down coffin. I’m amazed that you did and then have made such a fabulous use of that shape. It’s great. Hope you are feeling better soon.
If someone does want additional help on sleeves... Retro Claude did a reeeeally good tutorial on them. I watched it, and honestly haven't had much trouble since.
As far as the blue table of doom: I have seen where other people have set their tabletop on either cabinets or dressers that were the correct height. Bonus for having extra storage. 🥰 I hope that you get a house soon. Cathy from Alabama 🥰🥰
I see what you mean about the extra fullness that you added to the neckline. My grandmother used to say it doesn't need to be perfect, but I can see where it would bugg you. Maybe wear it again when you're not sick and if it still bugs you, I'd take off the facing and cut it down to take out the additional inch, then sew the facing back on? Good luck sweetie and feel better soon!!! Cathy from Alabama 🥰🥰 PS I do love all your designs and how you explain moving darts and adding design fullness and such is a huge help. 8 design from scratch and wing it: I was never professionally taught, which is funny because my degree is in fashion design! That was 40 years ago and from the University of South Carolina!
You are right, the gathering at the neckline could look better, but the silhouette and the skirt are really good and I love the fabric. Navy blue would be a really nice colour for the next one. 😃
While we will all miss the Blue Patterning Table of Doom when the time comes, I think you appreciate the upgrade to a Proper-Height Patterning Table of Doom, whatever color it may be!
Love it. Perhaps a version with either a contrasting colour (subtle) or contrasting texture (reptile?) for the coffin? Just enough hint for the viewer to give it a double take and walk away with a puzzled expression.
Concerning an alternate name to "the blue table of doom" in a new sewing room may I suggest "the gray table of dismay" since the dark fabrics you mainly use look great against your ironing board which looks to be a light gray?!?! ;)
Very nice! Love the pleat in the front of the skirt. Personally, I would like to see the coffin right side up... 🤷. Love how you styled it too with the olive and rust colors.
Love your videos! The zipper tutorials would be GREAT for me. I learned to do zippers back in the 70's right about when 'invisible zippers' came in, and never learned how to do any other kind. Mostly laziness? Yes. Now I find I really need to do a 'regular' zipper. Cheers!
I was like "coffin dress" I got to watch LOL I think it came out beautiful! I can't sew to save my life, but I do enjoy watching from the drawing table of doom to the finish. Excellent ♡
Lol when I’m sick you’d have to prise my coffee from my cold dead hands……I’m pretty sure it’s the only thing that keeps my heart ticking over. Love the object lessons on styling a pattern :)
I have been watching your older videos and was pleasantly surprised to see this video pop up today. I lobe your work and designs. Thank you for bring such a wonderful inspiration! 👍
Bianca, you dear, are a treasure. I simply love how you see things and make the fabric match what you envision. I understand why you Always start with your custom bodice block. Then rearrange darts and seams to suit your fancy. My issue: I am now 59. Over the last years of perimenopause I have gone from a little chubby to oh my, oh my you are Really large (2x) large, sadly. So... How do I create a bodice block for the new giant me? Can you have a larger guest and actually go thru creating a bodice block for her? Thank you. You are a whiz at sewing. I so enjoy watching your videos sewing or crafting or look book, etc.
Thank you! The process for creating a block does not change depending on size, the same principals and methods apply to all. Each person is going to have different fitting concerns when it comes to refining their block pattern, a sway back, a full bust adjustment, a different shoulder slope than "standard", adding ease if they wish. Every person has a different body to fit, the size of that body does not change having to go through the fitting process. In school I learned how to make patterns for a size 8 industry dress form (a size 2-ish in clothes) and when I later made a block for myself, the process was the same, but my pattern needed a full bust adjustment, the shoulder angle was all "wrong", and I always have to take another dart out of the front armscye. I have only ever dealt with my own fitting, I have never sewn for another real person and was not taught tailoring or fitting in my university programs (attending several schools, the subject was never so much as brought up). So I am not a good resource for fit! I am experienced in pattern manipulation for fashion design, but not in tailoring. I always recommend the blog Curvy Sewing Collective, as that was where I learned how to do an FBA for my own block. curvysewingcollective.com/category/fitting/ They also have resources on pattern companies that may have styles that would be good starting points for making a block!
@@TheClosetHistorian Thank you. I have recently found some patterns, in my mom's stash, that I think will work. My first official copy of you will be the pirate shirt. You had such clear directions that I am encouraged to cut and sew, not fearing wasting supplies. Thank you, I shall look up the links and get busy. ☺
I adore this dress. I just found your channel today and listened to a number of videos while I hand sewed the finishing touches on a custom dress using vintage sequined fabric for a 70's vibe Mother of the Bride dress. I'm just in love with your style and I really enjoy hearing your commentary. You're entertaining while sharing your process. You make nice company for a long quiet sewing day. One thing I wanted to tell you is about pressing: Did you realize that whichever side you choose to press to will highlight that side of the seam? You're adding the bulk so that part will stand out slightly. I always consider this when I need to choose the side if I'm not pressing open. It makes sense to press toward center because center is front and center (duh, but you get me). Pressing up on the waist is sort of like a shirt tucked into pants that will drape out and over. With the coffin, it makes sense to press toward the coffin (which is also the path of least resistance). I liked how you said learn the rules so you know which ones you can break based on how you work. That's perfect. I don't use pins much except when I'm matching seams or working with chiffon or another difficult fabric. Whatever works for you works for you. Well done channel! I will be devouring all of the videos in the coming days and weeks. Hope you feel better soon!
I’m sorry you are sick, hopefully by the time you are reading this you are doing better. We can definitely upgrade the bleu pattern table of doom to the whatever new color your new table is going to be. 😂
Really love the brown it’s smooth and subtle. The secret coffin would be great for conservative work places where personality dressing is not appreciated. Thank you for another inspiring video.
I have to agree with you about the neckline. As a sewist as well, I would have noticed it even if you hadn't mentioned it. With that said I still think the dress is beautiful on you. I am a huge fan of brown. It can just be a couture design. I hope you feel better quickly. It sucks being under the weather in this most wonderful time of the year, Halloween.
This dress turned out very elegant, the small folds in the skirt look so nice in this fabric. I agree it's a great addition to your pattern library 😊 and the perfect level of spookyness too! About the gathers to the shoulders, I'm sure you've already planned to move the design cut in the pattern to the armscye instead of the shoulders, if you make it again? I think that would look even better 😊. I would LOVE to se the coffin decorated with beads and sequins and embroidery. Ooh, a skeleton would be perfect for a coffin! But it would be upside down of course.... maybe a bit weird? Oh well any kind of decoration would look good I think.
I see the shoulder weirdness but wouldn’t have necessarily noticed it being odd if not pointed out by you. 🌈🌈🦋🦋 I love the wide front pleat in the skirt.
You are so damn cool 😊 you have that vibe I remember from when I was young When I would look at my older cousins and just think I wanted to dress and be just super chill like them. Loooove this idea and dress. You look stunning in it!
Speedy recovery, Bianca! I like your inspiration dress. I'm very attached to your saying 'blue patterning table of doom'. I would love a zipper tutorial.
Neat design and I really liked how you got the music to sound far off like it's in another room. With all of your espresso coloured rayon crepe, yokes and tailor's ham, it's like breakfast in the sewing room, ha! 😅
For your future blue doom drafting table, look for a kitchen island. I recently got a huge one second hand and it is fantastic. It also happens to be blue so I pretend I have your skills. They have the benefit of being a good height and have heaps of storage. Good luck with getting your own house.
people make cutting tables out of ikea kallax units and either table tops from ikea or MDF. if you use MDF, you could paint it. or upholster it in blue fabric with a thin foam under, and have a built in ironing board.
Sympathy for the cold--I also got knocked down this week and have been miserable. I hope you feel better soon! I'm in your corner with the sleeve situation. I've not had problems with sleeves. It's the supposedly easy stuff that I mess up, like following a straight line. Without my trust friend tailor's chalk, I'd be a real mess.
I'm just catching up to this wonderful video. I think the weight of that fabric ended up working for you. It looks more like a wool fabric in the way it moves and drapes. Beautiful! Brown was the right choice of colour too. BAM!!!
I think you do need to have a BLUE patterning table (of doom) because the blue is quite easy on the eye, adds a good contrast to the white alphanumeric paper without being too bright or dark or whatever.
Love the design of your dress. For your throat: take 2 Tbsp whiskey or bourbon, add a spoonful of honey and a squeeze of lemon mixed together. This is an old fashioned remedy. I hope that it helps you! Love from Cathy in Alabama 🥰
The more I watch you, the more I understand. Thank you.
I hope you start feeling better soon.
Thank you Jane!!

I am so glad to hear this!! I'm sorry about the patterns, but also not sorry becuase now you can do anything 😂✨❤️
Getting tasteful wealthy widow vibes on her first day out of mourning. And I am so here for it.
Personally, I come for the loopy, rambly, unhinged narration and the spoopy wonderfulness that is all year. :)
I love this subtle geekery. I'm not goth and would never wear a coffin, but the concept of subtly incorporating personality appeals to me very much... Like.. Have you seen any of the subtle geeky knit Fair Isle patterns? They’re all over Ravelry and they’re super cute!
Of COURSE we love it - regardless of the neck fullness 😂
Thank you Debi! 😅❤
“Learn the rules, know the rules (why they exist), break the rules” is what I was always taught. I totally agree with your sewing methodology :)
Honestly that's what I've been taught in other arts so, same
The blue color of the table shows up well on camera and is often a very good contrast to your fabric, which is helpful.
Secret Goth -- now there's a sub culture goal! Blue Patterning Table of Doom, Green sewing table of Glee.

Thank you Michele!!
Very pretty! I’d like to see this dress done with a fabric that has a directional nap/texture (I think those are the correct terms), so that the coffin part would stand out just slightly more if it was cut on the opposite grain or flipped grain.

Thank you Alecia! I think a nap reversal for the coffin would be excellent, or a coffin in a satin texture with a matching crepe ✨
You did it again Bianca with your unique style, it might be plain to how you usually emblish your garments, but it is simple and sophisticated ✂️🧵😊💕
Thank you Lynn!
I can't wait to try to make this! I love it so much 😍

Ha!
Thank you! Do it ✨ Also, that would indeed be amusing 😂

Oh my gosh, you never disappoint. You are so amazingly wickedly talented. Beautiful dress!
Thank you so much Brenda!
Love the Subtle Goth vibes of this one. And yay rambling zipper video!
Thank you! Zipper video coming in January I hope, I put it on my calendar 😅✨
Thanks for the heads up on the zipper tutorial I super need that.😀 Love the dress.
Thank you Rose! I'm going to try to get the zipper video done for January!
Love the style. This would look fantastic in either navy blue or dark green. :}
Or dark red!
Thank you! I'd love either for sure!
I quite like it when you wear gloves; it adds a great deal of additional ladylike elegance to an outfit!
Love the Brown fabric - I would love to see more brown garments it's very flattering.
Thank you Susan!

I learn SO MUCH from your videos! Thank you!
Wishing you a speedy recovery! ❤
The final dress is lovely! As are all your creations. I see what you mean about the neckline, but I don't think others will notice it.
Thank you Laura!
Yes!! We fabric junkies say " order more fabric!!!" LOL

Brown is one of my comfort colors! And the great contrast of the hat and purse actually made the dress more visible! Great job, again ! 🤩
Thank you Vivian!
You are right, the gathering at the neckline could look better, but the silhouette and the skirt are really good and I love the fabric. Navy blue would be a really nice colour for the next one. 😃
Thank you Mary! I may try this dress again next year with a few tweaks!
The way you pattern draft is magical❤
Thank you! I really enjoy it!
Fabulous tutorial. And that final outfit? Stunning!
Your work just seems to be getting better and better.
Thank you Kaytie!
I love love love the subtle neckline!
This is adorable! The fullness in the neck is giving mock bolero vibes and I love a bolero!!!
Thank you Lady P!
I love how it looks like it has a little bit of a cowl. 🖤
Thank you!

Love the front pleats on the skirt, and the way they fall from the flat coffin shape.
Thank you Cheryl!
Love it. Perhaps a version with either a contrasting colour (subtle) or contrasting texture (reptile?) for the coffin? Just enough hint for the viewer to give it a double take and walk away with a puzzled expression.
Black with a burgundy or deep orange coffin could be lovely, though the one here is also beautiful!
I agree! Or with a contrast texture for the coffin and dress, shiny versus crepe etc ✨
Ooo, beautiful!! So sleek. The shoulder gathering just makes it look like you're wearing a bolero.
Thank you!
You could made the coffin with one of those shiny "metallic" fabrics
Concerning an alternate name to "the blue table of doom" in a new sewing room may I suggest "the gray table of dismay" since the dark fabrics you mainly use look great against your ironing board which looks to be a light gray?!?! ;)
I chose the gray ironing board cover for this reason so indeed this makes sense...perhaps a mid blue gray for the table next time 😂
Very nice! Love the pleat in the front of the skirt. Personally, I would like to see the coffin right side up... 🤷. Love how you styled it too with the olive and rust colors.

Thank you Janice!

I see stained butcher block! Either colour will work.
Usually sleeve problems are if people skip gathering stitches for the shoulder, or the sleeve cap has too much ease for the armscye
I have been watching your older videos and was pleasantly surprised to see this video pop up today. I lobe your work and designs. Thank you for bring such a wonderful inspiration! 👍

Thank you! I think I'd like a matte dress with a satin coffin, or vice versa ✨
Love your dresses
Thank you!
I’m glad you are feeling better
Thanks Liz! Once I kick this lingering cough I will rejoice fully at last!!
I see the shoulder weirdness but wouldn’t have necessarily noticed it being odd if not pointed out by you. 🌈🌈🦋🦋 I love the wide front pleat in the skirt.
Thank you Vikki!

For your future blue doom drafting table, look for a kitchen island. I recently got a huge one second hand and it is fantastic. It also happens to be blue so I pretend I have your skills. They have the benefit of being a good height and have heaps of storage. Good luck with getting your own house.
Thank you Annette! I like the idea of butcher block counters stained blue perhaps 💙
I didn't even notice the extra floopiness in the bodice because I was distracted by your accessories. Just gorgeous.
Thank you Natalie!
people make cutting tables out of ikea kallax units and either table tops from ikea or MDF.
if you use MDF, you could paint it. or upholster it in blue fabric with a thin foam under, and have a built in ironing board.
I do like the butcher block option for sure!
I hope your are felling better! ❤️
A lovely dress and tutorial! There are so many creative options with this design!
Thank you Haddie!
knocked it out of the park. love it.
Thank you Tracia!
love your hair style could you show how you do it please
I'm just catching up to this wonderful video. I think the weight of that fabric ended up working for you. It looks more like a wool fabric in the way it moves and drapes. Beautiful! Brown was the right choice of colour too.
BAM!!!
Thank you!
I love it, thank you, your extremely talented and entertaining... love watching you
Thank you Ruth!
Oh this is a very clever thing
I think you do need to have a BLUE patterning table (of doom) because the blue is quite easy on the eye, adds a good contrast to the white alphanumeric paper without being too bright or dark or whatever.
I think wood stained blue is quite pretty also...💙✨
Love the design of your dress.
For your throat: take 2 Tbsp whiskey or bourbon, add a spoonful of honey and a squeeze of lemon mixed together. This is an old fashioned remedy. I hope that it helps you! Love from Cathy in Alabama 🥰
Thank you Cathy!
A beautiful dress on a beautiful lady
Thank you Naomi!
"Secret Coffin Dress" I love it.
