Solve your vole problem by finding some good old-fashioned barn cats.
I have quite a few. I have one that has taken out a few rabbits and pretty much every mouse, mole, chipmunk and bird within 1000 meters of my house. And barn. She definitely earnes her keep that's for sure.
I also had voles. I made rabbit habitat with tree branches piles,. When the foxes come to eat the rabbits I left the gates open to the garden and the foxes also ate the voles. Its always nice to see the fox babies in the wood brush piles in the spring until the mountain lions come. Please let us know what seeds company,s you like and whare you buy your trees , thanks for the info! I have no more voles, certain dogs are good at helping the problem too

Put a dump truck load of wood chips over the mud about 30cm deep. The wood chips will not get pushed into the mud the way rock will and it will keep the lane from getting all soupy in the future.
I used wood chips on a wooded path in a flood basin near a creek about 2 years ago and it is held up great.

er, I had also a problem of voles on 3 Ha. It was terrible and I lost more than 15 big fruit trees in one winter. I took on some Cameroon sheep, and I'll be damned if their little feet didn't trash all the vole tunnels when they were allowed to forage in the deeply wet times of winter. They have many kilos on one little foot and I guess the voles just drown. At any rate the vole problem here has cleared up completely, I sure hope it remains so. Ghastly problem otherwise. I was ready to give up completely, but the sheep saved me I belleve!
hey Richard, i think you should protect the axle and the shock absorber from getting hens droppings on them, they will rust really quick, thx for your videos, very inspiring!
Same thing with the voles last year, here in southern Ontario. (near Toronto)
Hi there Richard. Your work is amazing. I just want to say that you should reconsider your beds position under the sun and here I mean the west to east ones. The best way is north-south because the sun embraces the rows 180degrees which produces the best results. Once again, well done and thanks for keeping inspiring us!
I use homemade gopher cages in the tree holes when I plant new trees. I make sure the netting is sticking out of the ground 4 in. Its the only thing that keeps the voles from getting to the tree when the snow is on the ground for a long time.
I was worried about the roots getting through the netting as the trees mature. But , I found a few orchards around me that have healthy mature trees that have used the cages.

Jack Russell terriers were used to clear rats on English farms ,and this could lead to solutions.

Have you seen "Bear Mountain Farm", they have a great video for dealing with high wind areas and catapillar tunnel. I have had winds as high as 50 mph and no problem.
And: finally you get rolling. Can you believe, that I was checking Swedish weather to find hints how quick your snow melts!? Hahaha! Cant wait for the next videos!

Hi Richard, try some wood vinegar on those voles...put it around plants and pour some in the burrows to chase them out. Pour in on a tree and the base to keep voles and hare in check for the winter. If you don't have any we can send you a complimentary 1000 liter IBC full of it. Great for a lot of things. Cheers man love your videos.

Shame they don't let you engage in falconry. It'd be great to have a feathered assassin working nights on the voles for you. Plus owls are awesome. I've read that they can be attracted with owl calls over speakers and are pretty unabashed about investigating, even when you are standing out there in the light. Maybe you could trick some into taking up residence at your farm. Glad you're finally thawed, I'm looking forward to watching your operation this year. Cheers.
We have huge problems with gophers here in oregon. Sure is a pity when they ruin trees and and berry bushes. Snakes might help with that problem.

I know this is not farm related as such, but what kind or type of camera do you use?
Are the shoe tray not susceptible to chemical leeching?
Do you leave your chicken feed out at night? If so, it would be interesting to set up a camera and see how many voles/rats are coming to the feeder at night.

Encouraging predators sounds like a great way for controlling the vole population, but are you not worried about hawks and birds of prey around your chickens?
I've been trying these IKEA Shoe Trays for Microgreens: www.ikea.com/se/sv/catalog/products/60329711/?query=BAGGMUCK+Skomatta A little problematic because the sides are tapered more than a standard 1020 or shallow 1020 tray, but I'm thinking of using corrugated plastic "lids" to enable stacking and promote better germination.
