    Thanks for the video, I was able to install a D-tuna on my decked Gotoh 1996T. Its easier to just use the fine tuner to drop tune imo.

    • @REXYLAB
      @REXYLAB  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree, it is easier to do that but then other issues pop up. This is why I use a 7 string or a hard tail with a Hipshot D tuner if I want to tune to D.

      Gotoh 1996T has more range on the fine tuners than a Floyd as far as I'm aware. That's what I do with my Gotoh. I have mine set with a trem stop, and I spend most of the time in drop tuning, but it's very easy to tune it to standard.

    I put the ball end thru the tuner because the string will usually always break at the bridge saddle…then you can quickly unwind to give some slack to feed it back into the saddle…lock the string back down retune …and Bob’s your uncle👍

    • @REXYLAB
      @REXYLAB  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can still do that without the ball end at the string post.
      But, if you regularly break your string at the saddle there is probably a burr on your saddle or something else wrong.
      I maintain, there is zero advantage to stringing your guitar that way. If you do it because you like it for some reason that’s one thing, but there is no advantage to having the ball ends at the headstock.

    There's actually a video with Duane Baron (the guy that invented the String Stretcha) or EVH's old guitar tech I can't recall which atm... But he slides it down the strings. That's how it's supposed to be used. He actually recommends having more than one on hand when doing multiple guitars because the sliding creates so much friction and heat that they will melt if you don't cool them down or switch to a different one. 😂😂😂

    When you engage the Dtuna, you should not see the screw, it should be flushed out with the extremity of the Dtuna, that is why the Dtuna comes with two length of screws, Using the longer one as see here will make the engaging to E a bit of an inexact science!

    Are you sure the retainer bar was screwed down low enough if the strings went so much out of tune after locking the nut? 22:24

    • @tuu_nainen
      @tuu_nainen ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, that was a nice tip to use the grub screw to tune the E, shame I seem to have lost mine. :) I have been using the fine tuner always with the D-Tuna but it’s far from perfect, guess I have to find the dimensions of the grub screw somewhere and order one.
      Does a Floyd inherently become stiffer to use with the D-Tuna, since you have to deck it so tight with the springs? I would prefer a bit softer feel on it 😮

    • @REXYLAB
      @REXYLAB  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tuu_nainen thanks for watching the video. Let me address the most important thing first.
      That grub screw is the most important part of the mechanism. If you don’t have it this thing is next to impossible to use accurately. The fine tuner will just hang it up and cause difficulty and inaccuracy in the use of the D-tuna. You can order a new grub screw here.
      www.fu-tone.com/product/evh-d-tuna-fine-tuning-screw/
      Next would be the retainer bar question. It was definitely tightened the proper amount. Not a lot of people know this but there were a bunch of Floyd Rose prototypes that lead to what we just call “Floyd Rose” today, basically the FRT-5
      The first Floyd to have fine tuners was the FRT-4. This was a direct result of what a pain in the butt it was to get the guitar in tune with the locking nut and no fine tuners. It’s a fascinating story if you’re a guitar nerd like me. You can read about it here.
      vintagefloydrose.com/frt-4/
      Anyway, most people clamp the locking nut way too tight (myself included). This pulls the string sharp. Personally, this is one of the reasons I don’t have a D-tuna in any of my personal guitars. The proper way to do this with the least tuning issues is the way I show in this video.
      Decking the Floyd definitely makes it stiffer. You can adjust your claw to make it lighter but it does have to be decked for the D-tuna to work properly or be made dive only in one way or another.
      Also, the EVH Floyd is a Floyd Rose 1000 that has been rebranded. The materials used are the same as the Schaller made German Floyds but the finish work isn’t as good. Therefore, sometimes there is a burr under the fine tuner of the low E that will hang up your D-tuna (assuming you didn’t put one in aftermarket).
      I don’t know how much of that you knew or didn’t know but that is just the tip of the iceberg. There is a lot of forgotten history on these things. That’s why I am doing my series, “would a Floyd Rose by any other name play as sweet”.
      If any of this interests you I have a huge video coming out on the history of Kahler very soon. There is some weird stuff in there when it comes to Kahler and Floyd and how their paths intertwined. I hope you enjoy it.

    Got my D-tuna setup with 9-42 strings and half step down. With D-tuna pulled, it reaches C# perfectly, but whenever I push it to the "non-drop" position, my low D# is sharp by just a few cents. I turned that small screw until it almost falls off, but still couldn't make it get in tune perfectly. Any advices on that?

    • @REXYLAB
