I cant believe this didnt start a bigger discussion. This is 5 years old and as far as I know nothing has changed.
This explains so much for me, I struggled for years to understand why I had so many "different issues", but what she says makes perfect sense. Theyre all just manifestations of the same thing.

In working with NSSI for over 20 years and over 550 cases, it is imperative to get to the core issues because the mistake that many providers make is to only focus on the behavior. You can stop one behavior but if you do not get into the root system that led to said behavior, you end up playing whack-a-mole with new behaviors. Kudos to her for talking about her experience and trying to take action to educate others about these behaviors.

This is powerful. If all forms of self-destructive behaviour can be linked back to one source, it would become so much simpler to treat, potentially - or at least we'd know more about ourselves. I had sort of assumed these behaviours in myself were interchangeable (because I've had similar experience), but I didn't know for sure if anyone else thought so too. I have gotten to a point with my personal meditation that I can sense the emotional energy that wants me to be self destructive start to "wake up" in my consciousness, and I know before it can make me miserable that if I don't watch it closely it will take advantage of any possible self-worth weakness I have, any avenue whether it's overeating junk food or even something as simple as giving in on a mean thought about myself and beating myself up about it. Self destructiveness is strange, it's like a form of addiction.
This was really well researched & very calm and confident. You seem like someone who has experienced all the things you're talking about but is over it & it looks like you're building it into a strength now because you seem so self assured giving this talk.
I think your research has real potential and is an important key to helping people with these behaviours because yes, they do all seem to be linked, at least from my perspective as well.

Excellent talk on a difficult topic to diagnose, to treat and for family and friends to cope with. Look forward to further talks on the advancements your research brings to healing these individuals.

Im sure shes a smart person but I dont see the major breakthrough here. That being said I wish more people bothered to do research on these disorders.

The importance of her research is that currently maladaptive coping mechanisms like eating disorders, self harm and substance abuse are treated as completely separate things. In the practice of psychology this has a couple issues 1) it fails to capture that many people engaging in one are engaging in another and thus treatment often fails to address the underlying issues especially since people will flit from one disorder to the next appearing to get better but actually subbing say anorexia for self-harm 2) for issues like self-harm that don't appear in the DSM there is no diagnostic code for providers to submit so they have to diagnose something else to get paid
She is suggesting that we should consider that all of these disorders are in fact one disorder of self destructiveness manifesting in different ways and it should be treated as such
