    I'm autistic and I love to ritualize my meals. I don't know how else to describe it. I'm not talking about anything gourmet or fancy, either. For example, I had Hot Pockets tonight. And if I have Hot Pockets, I have to have tater tots for a side dish. And I love plenty of hot sauce on both, and always put my hot sauce on my table beforehand. It's not ironclad, and if things don't go perfect I don't have a meltdown. But when things go right, and I have my Hot Pockets, tots, and hot sauce before me, it's immensely satisfying and comforting.

      I hear you, man. I'm autistic too and I love my spice. I will not eat and Indian rice curry nor chilli until after I've loaded it up with cayenne peppers (jalapeños in a pinch) or scotch bonnet sauce.

    This movie was genius. The acting was genius, everything about it was genius! It's hilarious and endearing but I'm afraid it and other movies like it set up a stigma that this is how people with autism behave when most do not. Even the man that the film was based on did not. This makes it more difficult for people with autism to cope in society. If they don't behave like Raymond they are often judged as simply having social inadequacies and lead a lonely life, falling through the cracks. Sadly, many of them choose to never admit they have autism and can never be who they really are except behind closed doors.

    • @raea3588
      @raea3588 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Ali B I don't blame the movie at all. As my first comment's sentence said it's genius! And as you said, no movie about an autistic individual could portray everyone on the spectrum as everyone on it is so different.
      I suppose my comment was meant to be more of a disclaimer: Watch and enjoy and be educated because there is a lot in "Rain Man" that was ahead of it's time in showing how many people on the autistic spectrum deal with life. But also be aware that not every autistic person you meet will be a savant, will not be exactly like Raymond. :)

      @psifla99 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s just it. It’s a consequence rather than the fault of the film.

      I think these days more people are wising up that most of the time, if you're socially inept or otherwise "weird", it's probably because you're on the spectrum. However Ray's toothpick scene does totally remind me of how some special needs people I used to work with would act.

      I never thought about that before but then I watched that clip and yes, Tom Cruise did not take one drag from the cigarette. The most he did was hold the lit cigarette in his hand. Come to think of it, in the diner scene with the juke box, Tom Cruise has a lit cigarette but does not seem to take a drag at all. In the casino scene where he and Dustin Hoffman are playing cards, Tom Cruise lights up a cigarette but he does not seem to be smoking it at all.

    What's impressive about this scene and looks like nobody catches: the "injury" in the neck is Charlie Babbitt related 18th injury, it's not Raymond's 18th "serious injury" overall, because it would be too few for an entire life, and Raymond probably won't need a notebook to write down this little. That means that Charlie did hurt Raymond 17 times as an infant. This is a foreshadowing of their life together, that was fully revealed just in the hot water scene much later.

    When he says "Tuesday we have pancakes" does that mean they have pancakes every Tuesday at the facility?
    That doesn't seem like they are helping fix the autism. That seems like they're aiding it and allowing it to continue.

    • @Harkhoost
      @Harkhoost 10 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      There are no 'fix' for autism. People are born with it, and it stays there for the rest of their lives. If i brake the routines at home, my autistic son will be consumed with stress. Thats why there are pancakes every Tuesday.

      @@Harkhoost I know this post is 7 years old but I am a believer that if people have autism or any kind of disability like that the person should be comfortable and not out of their element. If they are going to be living with this why not make their lives as comfortable and pleasant as possible. My two sons both had learning disabilities but I didn't have to work as hard as you do. God bless you and all you do for your son.

    • @sarahjohnson8851
