Congrats ladies on your induction into the 2021 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Well deserved. Never had there been a female band that rocked at all positions
Based on 2 hit singles, hardly worthy when you consider there are more iconic acts who will never make it but it's The Rolling Stone magazine who make the final call...
@@Ishidanfarded2370 They were bigger than that here in the United States. Their debut remains one of the top selling debut albums on the US Charts and was the first all girl band-who wrote their own music and played their own instruments-to have a number one album. They also helped define both the sound of an era and the look of early MTV. Sometimes iconic music is not the best music, I agree... but I invite you to watch their version of this song on video, sit back, and imagine if you were a musically inclined young woman how much impact seeing women who created all of their own music, topping the charts, on heavy airplay on the newest musical medium... I was surprised when I saw the GoGos were in, but then I tried to look at it differently and then I realized their impact might be larger than I thought.
@@brettbigham8420 Yet people will say "Oh the Runaways should be in over The Go-Go's"... Really ? When they imploded before they reached the mountain top ? When they never reached the commercial success The Go-Go's did with Four albums in America ? I'lll give you another one... Why are the Sex Pistols in the Hall of fame with just 1 album ? Its a two way street here Its not always about the number of albums and songs you put out... Its how your music impact generations of bands and acts after you, and The Go-Go's have that argument 100%. Even people Like Green Day and Kurt Cobain, have said The Go-Go's were some of their notable influences... Think about that and tell me The Go-Go's shouldn't be in the HOF. You absolutely correct Brett
@@chasewoolfork2350 The Go-Go's absolutely deserve their induction. They made a HUGE impact in the early 80's, they've stood the test of time (as this video ably demonstrates) and their influence lives to this day. Quality over quantity, as you noted with the Sex Pistols. Their impact is immeasurable with only 1 album.
The Go Gos captured the spirit and fun of '60s girl groups on their 1981 album, Beauty And The Beat...However, being a high school kid who leaned more toward melodic hard rock, I really didn't care much for them back then...But time has mellowed me out and surveying what passes for music these days, you know, I kinda miss The Go Gos' lightweight, relentlessly peppy, summery, sun-kissed style of California pop now...If Belinda Carlisle and her bandmates ever were to consider reuniting to cut a comeback album full of fresh, new GoGos tunes, that would be a real gas!...I'd almost certainly run out and buy a copy for myself...So, how about it, ladies? Just one more for old times sake?......

Watching this today as Terry Hall has sadly passed away. Great song. Jane Wiedlin has said in tribute, “Our extremely brief romance resulted in the song Our Lips Are Sealed, which will forever tie us together in music history."
Here because of just remembering Janes ‘Rush Hour’ but been thinking of Terry and playing this tune a lot - thanks to you, the two are linked for me now 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I am sooooo glad that The GoGo's are inducted in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year 2021. They were groundbreaking and they are now very legendary 40 years later. Love them.......
Ok. Who remembers waiting for songs like this to come on the radio so you could record it? I was so analog that I had to hold my tape recorder next to my Dad's console speaker just to record my favorites. My brother and sister talking in the background just to piss me off, lol. 80's was definitely one of the best musical generations to grow up in. The birth of Hair Metal and Rap...my 2 favorites.
My mom showed me this song not too long ago. It´s awesome! Class of 2006, University High School, Santa Monica. And I also graduated from a mexican highschool in 2005
Belinda has such a truly unique tone to her voice, An artist in every sense of the word.....her style, her beauty, the way she moves and her vibrant energy...... all set her apart from many other female vocalists/artists! The GoGos are an amazing group! They surpassed all boundaries within an all female group that played all their own instruments. They will forever live in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame....Finally!
Back the 1980s I was a police dispatcher. In the years TBS had music videos all night Friday and Saturday on "Night Tracks", I listened to all of these wonderful songs. America needs to stop listening to the crybabies these days, and listen to these wonderful babes from the 80s. Fun and joy!
@@darrentylor5473 mind blown. I didn't even know Belinda was part of the Go Gos I hear it now, but I just never looked into who the girls were in the first place. "Our Lips are Sealed" and "I Think we're Alone Now" do have the same kinda "feel", yeah?
@@143AD I don’t know where you were then (assuming you were alive), but this album ruled the charts for weeks and was all over MTV, and the Go-Gos were hugely popular at my high school. In college I Dj’d for my fraternity and when I played this song everyone went nuts. You may not have liked them, but your claim that no one else did is laughable. They were the first all-girl rock band to be taken seriously by fans and by the industry, and their place in the Hall of Fame (disregarding whether that entity has any credibility) is absolutely deserved. If you disapprove of them so much, then why the hell are you watching this to begin with?
@@tmklunk Actually, I was there-were you? I vividly recall three solid albums in their heyday, including a smash debut-followed by a career of many great songs, with several classics-and more importantly the first band comprised completely of women to be taken seriously. No Svengalis, no ghost writers, no novelty stunts or corporate manipulation. They worked their asses off paying their dues on the Sunset Strip and LA clubs until they earned attention for their playing and songwriting skills, and got signed. It may be easy to shrug that off now, but back in 1981 “all girl” rock and roll groups didn’t exist-the closest thing to it were The Runaways, and they were totally the product of a sleazy Svengali-selected for their sex appeal, not their musicianship, and they were sold and packaged as a titillating novelty band. Only Joan Jett (and Michael Steele from the Bangles, who was an early member) turned out to actually have talent. Heart was a pseudo-predecessor but they were front women to an all-guy band. The Go-Gos were not marketed as eye candy (they cut their teeth as a punk band and they’d never tolerate that)-they emerged unheralded as a rock and roll band comprised of women, and we’d never seen anything like that before. It sparked a huge, ridiculous-in-retrospect debate at the time about whether they were a “real rock and roll band”, and I recall reading pages of backlash from the rock magazines back then about whether women could really play rock and roll. This was actually a huge topic of discussion that was depressingly given legitimacy-they shook up the myth of rock and roll as a man’s job, and their success spoke for itself. They paved the way for countless all-women bands that have achieved considerable success in subsequent years, and that fact alone is worth the Go-Go’s inclusion in the Hall of Fame-whether you think that organization has credibility or not. They were much more than “one or two decent songs”.
I just bought (again) an original pressing of this on vinyl. Now I am spinning it for my high school art classes and they absolutely love it!!! How can you not?
One of the best written and arranged pop songs of that day. The counter guitar melody that supports the second verse is especially genius. Economy, tone and presence are all spot on.
Not to mention the unusual chording of I - VIIb - V - I (the VII-flat doen't even belong to the scale). And the modulation chord of E that starts the chorus. (E _also_ doesn't belong to key). Wild stuff. Truly original. And many many great songs.
Right you are polystropicmusic, I honestly don't understand people who criticize the 80's. I lived through it. I'm not saying every day was bliss, but it WAS a good time. I'd go back in a New York minute!
all the twenty something girls I knew had their own place, car, their own jobs, usually college was behind them. and fun times were had by all. We'd all drive to Seattle to see the Whitecaps play , go to the beach downtown Van. and every weekend was a major event, free, we'd all appear at: italian day, greek day, air show, rodeo, ski and sail, and it' was all INEXPENSIVE. Even the ugly guys were getting laid. !!!
I was 9 when I watched this masterpiece in 1982 April. In the next semester, I was dancing this song in a school party with my lovely girl school mate. HAPPIEST moment in the most happy age of my entire life. Now, re-watching this beauty (and re-listening this beat) in full High Definition Sound & Vision, I cry in happiness for pure nostalgia. Good Old Times... The 80's branded themselves on our hearts. We take them with us.

My first class at Pasadena City College was Latin. On the first day a woman in my class hollered "yeah!" In response to my Black Flag shirt. I had no idea who she was. Two weeks after the end of the semester I went to a show of photography documenting the early LA punk scene. In a photo of the Gogos I recognized my classmate! It was the Bass player Kathy Valentine!

Why not throw an 80s party for her and friends and family to give her a taste? You could have food that came out during the 80s, 80s music, obviously, 80s style clothing and no smartphones during the party.

Really quite remarkable about their transformation. They started out as pure punks, even touring England which was a disaster. An amazing transformation born of perseverance, collaboration, and intuitive insights.

My college frat parties always rocked when this song was spun (yes, "spun" - no digital streaming back then). Even classical music students got into it. Thanks for bringing it back!

And why not? Age is a number, and we're still here. I'm 65, but to me '50's music will always be oldies, '40's music was in its own class, as all music thereafter.
Well, you lived rent-free at home, had few responsabilities and little worries. Once you get older, these things change and everything becomes more serious when you live with a wife you don't like anymore, have children that make you run up the wall and have a mortgage that you can hardly pay. The Go-Go's are headed to the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame! It's about time.
Its a two way street here
Its not always about the number of albums and songs you put out...

@@143AD That's not true, I know someone who was a teenager in the early 90's and they were really popular.
Find or two decent songs?

It was i graduated in 90. So got the best of the 80s. Everything was better. The people the movies and the music
One of the great memories. Over 40 years ago, watching mtv with friends and getting high...now I'm an old man, that was a quick ride.
Can't believe that it's been 40 years since this classic song came out all these years later it's still a timeless pop song happy 40th anniversary ladies 😘 ❤️ 🔥 this iconic song
Yep we are getting old! Grin. Whatever.. Cant help that. Only thing we can do is pass these great songs forward and hope our grandchildren learn.. Smile!
its strange that these songs still resonate even with younger generations. I mean its the equivalent of 80s kids that would have been vibing with 40-50s pop songs and those songs felt ancient in the 80s...
@@xpez9694 As a 14 year old nowadays tbh I came here from a horror novel featuring this song
How can a person not like this song?
This song stinks.
You're such a Lance.
