After seeing this, I would put level skip triggers in random places in levels in my game just to see what mad shit players would do to try and get them.
Put them in seemingly impossible places
i love it when game devs don't patch glitches that are harmless and are only used in speedruns

While I'm not sure of this was done on purpose, I do love how the gameplay throughout the video slowly got more and more technical, starting with pretty basic stuff and ending with legit speedrun clips. Nice touch!

Update: The military has arrived, but is failing to contain the situation. Madman seems to be able to outrun bullets. They are currently arming a nuclear device in an attempt to terminate the individual.

the resonance cascade takes that long because it tries (and does an AWESOME job at) getting you immersed.
it's right at the beginning where the game must make an effort to get the player hooked and again, it does an AWESOME job at that lol
experiencing the resonance cascade as a kid was beautiful and frightening.
to this day, i still consider it one of the most iconic scenes in my personal gaming experience.

The cascade has probably made aperture science the safest place despite the dangers of the test chambers

Your "How Speedrunners Skip X" series is one of my favorites on youtube. It combines Valve games, speedrunning, game / engine tech, and informed explanations which are my favorite kinds of content. Portal and Half-Life are two of my favorite games / series and I've always wanted to learn the runs for them and these videos really motivate and inspire me to finally do so.

there should be an easter egg if you skip the resonance cascade where the disaster never happens and there are no aliens
(yes i know it would be nearly impossible to program and not worth it at all but let me dream)
They should add a crowbar hidden in the facility leading up to the test chamber. If you pick it up you can smash the test sample and there will be no test that day. Gordon gets fired but everything else is fine.

- canals_11 skip (The infamous boatless skip at the gate that enables a boatless speedrun)
- energy ball launch skip in Dark Energy (Skipping through the tall elevator ride level)

6:30 *note that there’s another bug in the game where if you spam jump with crouch whilst falling you can void all fall damage or a very small amount. Seen and used this quite a bit.

This explanation is clear and understandable, thanks. I don't have the patience (or skill, sadly) to put in the hundreds of hours necessary to attain the skills and knowledge necessary for a good speed run, but I find the glitches and hidden anomalies of game engines (for games that I play) to be fascinating. And I have a very high regard for the people skilled enough and smart enough to study and create time saving tricks such as this.
That's so amazingly precise. A pixel perfect jump, and a landing which leaves you with 1 single effing HP. Speed running is something else.

I did search through the Half-Life (1 and 2) OST quite a bit while making this video, and while the Half-Life soundtrack has a ton of great songs, its a lot of high octane or creepy ambiance, which definitely aren't the vibes I'm going for in this video.
If you have any specific background music recommendations from games released by Valve, let me know! I'll happily check it out

The Snake is very useful in the Blood Stained Sanctuary, it was thanks to that weapon that allowed me to get a time of a little bit above 6 minutes (not 7 minutes)
and then I beat my previous best time when I did the Blood Stained Sanctuary with the Spur, giving me a time of 6'32"5, mostly because RNGesus was on my side

I've only ran portal and portal 2, never even played half life but this video is really good. The only thing I would've changed is instead of putting the percentage of viewers being subscribed next to the whiteboard at the end, I would've changed the texture of the whiteboard. It would've let the scientists know how many of us are subscribed. (im part of the 3.3%)

4:30 the reason this happens is because of FPS and modern machines, its just because the more FPS you have the more inputs it puts in, if you were to run the game at its native 30 FPS then u wouldn't be able to do that, just a fun fact

I remember when half life came out, I played with my pentium 166 with software rendering and I got at the test chamber room with the bortigons. I thought that was strange, as only occurred once and I believed that I entred an ultra difficult mode (without weapons). I had to run out the room without being killed, but I couldn't open the door. Now I understand why, and I my memory is ok.
