This song represents portuguese soul. We are a land of navigators , towards the misteries of the seas. Fado means destiny. Btw, this song was use on Richards Gere's film Cape of fear. Thanks for the love for Portugal, we send it back to you. Obrigado.

I agree, although I don't think this is Fado at all but, something else that was born from Fado. But it's a great representation of Portugal's sounds and meanings.

      Do céu, e desencanto:
Eis o que o céu me deu
Serei bem eu, sob este véu de pranto
Sem saber se choro algum pecado
A tremer, imploro o céu fechado
Triste amor, o amor de alguém
      Quando outro amor se tem
      Abandonada, e não me abandonei
      Abandonada, e não me abandonei
      Fui bailar no meu batel
      Além do mar cruel
      E o mar bramindo
      Diz que eu fui roubar
      A luz sem par
      Do teu olhar tão lindo
Vem saber se o mar terá razão
Vem cá ver bailar meu coração
Se eu bailar no meu batel
      Não vou ao mar cruel
E nem lhe digo aonde eu fui cantar
      Sorrir, bailar, viver, sonhar contigo
Vem saber se o mar terá razão
Vem cá ver bailar meu coração
Se eu bailar no meu batel
      Não vou ao mar cruel
E nem lhe digo aonde eu fui cantar
      Sorrir, bailar, viver, sonhar contigo

It's not a problem to cry, in fact it's the opposite. The old Portuguese soul provokes this in us. We Portuguese listen to these songs repeatedly, over and over again and every time we get goosebumps and tears in our eyes. It's like a drug for us.

This song had a heavy heritage, it was originally sang by Amália Rodrigues in 1955 which is Portugal's most iconic Fado Singer, and through Dulce Pontes amazing voice got this new mystical soul in 1993 that transported the song to a really high standard even in Portugal. Is probably one of the most iconic songs and most acknowledged Portuguese songs. I think only some of Madredeus songs get closer to the worldwide acceptance this music has.

I am of Portuguese heritage and of course, proud Canadian and recall family talking about how in the old days as the sailors went out to to sea, there was no way to know if they would return. Wives and family would wait by the seashore for the arrival of their husbands, their lovers, their family members to return home and once in a while, a black flag was risen above the ship to indicate a life, or lives, had been lost and that was the biggest fear on these small coastal fishing villages. Back then it was customary to dress in full black for life if you lost a loved one to the sea and well, these small villages were, we're covered in the darkness of the black cloth.

This song is VERY strong. You're not alone.
It is very connected with the portuguese soul. The feeling of longing, of missing our loved ones, who departed to the seas and never returned, discovering the world, and leaving their families behind. Our typical song genre, Fado, often sings about this feeling. We call it "Saudade". A mix of nostalgia, longing, missing someone/something, being both happy and sad for those memories, and cherishing them.... There's no translation for this word in english. But that is for sure what you've felt.

I love FADO music …I’m Indigenous Native American and late in life I found out my father’s father was not only Irish but he had some Portuguese heritage too. I was in shock and I would not share it with anyone. I asked my half sister who’s father is Mexican and she looked at me and said, “yes, I can see it”. I loved my father because he was an exceptional instrumentalist..but I’m don’t know if it’s from Brazil or Portugal. I’m fairly medium skin toned and Latin people always tried to speak to me in SPANISH but I’d tell them sorry I’m Indigenous Native which I can still speak my own language but no as good as I did because not many of my Tribal people are left who can speak our language. Anyway, when I was younger I’d look up FADO music and it would make me cry 😢❤ and it just seemed silly. My sister can speak Spanish though. It’s just blows me away that even today..I love Portuguese music. Thank you both so much for reacting to this. You’re an Amazing couple. 🙋🏻‍♀️❤️‍🔥🇺🇸
My sister is about to be a grandmother and this baby will be half 🇷🇴 Romanian. 😂

Im a Sephardic-Portuguese dude, With Wyandotte ancestry as well. You go two generations back and everyone was marrying French, Scots, and Greek-Italians. Its all blended.
You get mistaken for Spanish and most often I am mistaken for "Arab". I think people think "olive skin, curly headed, hat. Check." I get greeted in Arabic a lot. I kinda get what you mean sis.
I am a musician and Fado is such a special tradition to me. Despite my ancestors forced conversion, and my deprogramming that part of my heritage, Portugal an amazing place to me.
A land at the end of the known world where many disparate cultures were weaved together by DESTINY, or I would say the hand of God. Celts, Latins, Visigoths, Sea Peoples, Jews, Arabs, Africans, etc. The Culture of Portugal still transcends her borders because it has always an ethnic blender.
They became the Portuguese. A people with a long history of struggle, hard work, and austerity. The longest running nation-state in Europe who tried for sometimes better, sometimes worse, to embrace whatever the future held. To go out and find what it meant to be alive. To pursue love, glory, and the secrets of the world, or to find only heartbreak and grave. Either way that was life. That was destiny. That's Fado. Fado is an expression of life. The whimsical, the sad, the romance, the frightening. Its all there.

    Hello!
Yes, this is a true piece of art for all the senses and it is also the ultimate expression
    of the Lusitanian soul.
Even if the ears that listen to this gem are not Portuguese, it magically penetrates anyone.
It is impossible not to get goosebumps or travel to another beautiful space when listening
to Dulce Pontes singing this hymn to hope.
We Portuguese always shed tears when we hear it, it is so spiritual that it works as a cleansing
    and clearing of the heart.
    Greetings from Porto, Portugal.

I've had that experience with all the tourists at fado houses in Lisbon. People just feel it. It's wonderful. If you ever come to visit us, I think you'd love to try that. Just seat in a fado house and have your dinner there while listening to fado. It's a unique and pleasant experience. Thank you. This particular song means so much for every portuguese. Sorry, but there's only one best female singer from Portugal. I know, I know, saying it's Amália it's easy, we ear that from the birth, but it's one of that universal truths. I think the problem it's that we ear that só many times that we don't even ear Amália anymore. But... It's her. Not only the best voice in Portugal ever, but one of the best female voices of all time, all Over the world. There are less than a handfull of singers that could even compare with her. It's just another level, very unique, very rare. There's more female that went to space, that female singers on the level of Amália Rodrigues

    Fui bailar no meu batel
    Além do mar cruel
    E o mar bramindo
    Diz que eu fui roubar
    A luz sem par
    Do teu olhar tão lindo.
    Vem saber
    Se o mar terá razão
    Vem cá ver
    Bailar meu coração.
Se eu bailar no meu batel
    Não vou ao mar cruel
E nem lhe digo aonde eu fui cantar
    Sorrir, bailar, viver, sonhar contigo.
    Vem saber
    Se o mar terá razão
    Vem cá ver
    Bailar meu coração.
Se eu bailar no meu batel
    Não vou ao mar cruel
E nem lhe digo aonde eu fui cantar
    Sorrir, bailar, viver, sonhar contigo.
    (informal translation)
I went to dance on my little boat
    Beyond the cruel sea
    And the roaring sea
Says that I went to steal
    the peerless light
    of your eyes so beautiful
    Come and check
    If the sea is right
    Come here and see
    my heart dancing.
If I dance on my little boat
I will not go to the cruel sea
And I won't even tell it where I went to sing
Smile, dance, live, dream about you.
    Come and check
    If the sea is right
    Come here and see
    my heart dancing.
If I dance on my little boat
I will not go to the cruel sea
And I won't even tell it where I went to sing

Oh Dominika, you are such an emotional person and I love you so much for that. As I told you long time ago, you remind me of myself in too many ways that it is scary sometimes. 🖤
The song was really beautiful, it gave me chills from the beginning, although it sounds familiar. I might have heard it on radio or somewhere, but never really payed attention.
And Kai, you nailed it this time. Great song! 🖤
Btw, I know very well that you already have tons of recommendations on your list, but I have been thinking of one song for days and now after this reaction I kinda feel even more that you would like it. And I know you also love Spanish language, so if you want something that might touch you, I recommend song "Morire siendo de ti" from Mägo de Oz. There is no video with English subtitles, unfortunately, but if you ever choose to do that song, please read the lyrics first. At least the google translated version. It is song dedicated to mothers. And I really think you would like the music and the vocals. It is very touching song which I love a lot, so you might like it as well.
Actually, Mägo de Oz has many beautiful songs (and ballads) that I'm sure you would like, but the main problem is that there are no videos with English lyrics, so I'm afraid they would not have the same impact on you as if you could listen to them following the lyrics.
    Sending you love! 🖤

oh wow, I know you guys from Nightwish! So nice to see you listen to Portugese music! Dulce is a woonderful singer. The ocean is a spiritual thing for Portuguese people. It brings us life and food, but it also took many lifes. We respect the ocean extremely much and feel a deep connection with it. It makes me proud as a Portuguese that it also impacts you in a beautiful way. Fado hits you in the heart.
A beautiful Fado also is "o gente de minha terra - from Mariza", live in Lisboa in the open air. You see the castles and forts at the sea . (de mensen van mijn land, it is an old Fado and emotional)
    Muito obrigado meu amigos🤗

Portuguese singers like Dulce Pontes are famous exactly for making everyone cry of joy when they sing, not of sadness but for how deeply it touches the soul. Tears are inevitable 🥲 don’t worry Dear

Fado is a music genre based on the feeling of "saudade" a Portuguese word that means missing something, or someone. I believe you felt it that much, because this song brings that nostalgic feeling of saudade to the maximum. It's a song about what was left behind in Portuguese history, about the ones that are gone, and we can feel it. It's amazing how that passes even to non Portuguese speakers.
