My head canon is that the California class was originally drawn up as the Miranda class type workhorse ship counterpart to the Ambassador class, but along the way the design went a bit wonky and was delayed until the pre-Galaxy class era of the Freedom & Cheyenne class.
The Vancouver on the other hand, feels like it could legitimately be that same Miranda-esque workhorse counterpart, only for the Sovereign class. Only this time the design brief stayed truer to the Miranda concept.

    • @3Rayfire

@@3Rayfire it definitely feels like that was the intention for the Nebula, but to me it never quite sat right that the ship still has a full secondary hull and is just missing the neck bit. I think there is a good argument for the Parliament class to have been in service for a while before 2380, with the two known ships of the class, the USS Vancouver and the USS Toronto, having hull registries of NCC-70492 and NCC-70494. That would make them more contemporary with the Defiant (NX-74205), Sovereign (USS Sovereign NCC-73811), and other post Wolf-359 vessels from the early 2370s than the newer Luna class ones (USS Luna NCC-80101)

I feel like the Parliament is a Super Miranda. It's strength is its flexibility and ability to get stuff done. I wouldn't be surprised if a future Parliament is the U.S.S. O''Brien, or if an O'Brien variant will be introduced in the future.

A hero of at least two wars, and uncountable skirmishes, served on both the flagship of the Federation and the most important space station in the Alpha Quadrant, and most importantly of all, the man responsible for popularising darts across the entire galaxy.

I think one thing I might tweak about the Parliament class design if I wanted to make it a true Super Miranda class, would be to put shuttle bays in where those massive impulse engines are now. Replace them with a central impulse engine on the saucer, and then also add nacelle strut mounted impulse engines like on Voyager.

    • @dernudel1615
      @dernudel1615 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

@@adamlytle2615 How about this: There's the huge gap in-between the impulse engines, fill that area in with a bigger primary shuttle bay and use the one it has, now, as the secondary one or a modular work space. Then the whole saucer section would have an outline sorta like the ShiKar or Soyuz variants that STO has.

I figure that this is one of the post-Dominion War ship classes, replacing many of the older ships destroyed in the war. It has similar mission profiles to the Luna, but is faster to produce and easier to crew. The combat capabilities are significant, that dorsal phaser is one of the mighty Galaxy style long arrays that can bore into planet's mantles and melt comets in seconds rather than the short arrays of many ships of the time. With this array of capabilities it falls into the middle of the range of ships of that era in capability and likely punches above its weight in both engineering feats and combat while being serviceable for scientific roles and an excellent diplomatic platform. Expect to see these ships in leading roles in the squadrons on the Gorn, Tzenkethi, or Tholian frontiers where a modern ship is needed for diplomatic purposes but there is no immediate threat of war or wherever a major astro-engineering project is taking place.
Overall, a better design than anything from Picard or Discovery. And this is not even the series primary ship, this is the equivalent of the old kit-bashes!

At the same time The Uncanny X-Men are time hopping trying to get back home from a trip they recently took where they Met Kirk's Enterprise Crew (this was seen in a Star Trek/ X-Men Comic Book). It was called the "Star Ghost" cause it had a cloaking device that could fire it's weapons while cloaked plus we went through a hidden wormhole and popping up in parts of the Alpha sector. It was upgraded and we got zapped to the Next Generation era and even DS9 but by then we could use and make our own Wormhole cause of our travels. With this ship configured how it is, I suspect it was capable of mine laying and producing the mines on ship using raw materials with the specialized systems you mentioned. That would explain the off axis torpedo launchers. It is also likely that the torpedo launchers were capable of volley fire and could take advantage of the internal cargo space to provide a sizable magazine for battle and deployment for patrol in support of larger vessels or guarding facilities it was stationed at. With the sensor systems it has for science, it would be good at detecting stealth and even possibly cloaked enemies, so escort and guarding duties with the ablity to send off a cluster of quantum torpedoes at a cloaked ship to area detonate on it to take it out makes it very useful in a war time configuration. Carrying cargo into hostile areas with the ablity to protect itself from small enemy patrols by belching torpedoes like they are root beer foam is another mission profile it has.

everything in star trek is so closely tied to the warp core, so it would be hard to imagine a ship that was powerful in one way but not also powerful in other ways. Even without "weapons" you start being able to fry stuff with your sensors or crush ships (and moons) with the tractors.
I always thought this was the answer to why Galaxy's were so empty: if you want certain performance, you need a physically big warp core and nacelles and once you make a warp bubble to fit that, you have all the space you could ever need.

  • @TimeSpinner

Three different shipyards? Lots of space, lots of engineering-first purposes, a tiny profile, but still installing the full suite of Starfleet front-line tech?
...random headcanon: The Parliament class was "designed" not to be a front-line ship, but a ship that taught shipbuilding, somewhat like the Liberty class of American ships in WWII: It was a simple design that nonetheless involved all the aspects of bigger, more expensive ships, and it was forgivingly large to give crews leeway to gain the experience needed to build later, more complex frontline ships. But simple ships taught early also tend to be mastered quickly by the new upcoming generation of engineers and craftsmen, with modifications becoming common and well-understood, leading to this "engineering cargo scow" gaining a breadth of operational profile and a depth of operational service that would be hard to design intentionally.

I'm glad that the new Trek series don't do the MCU or Star Wars thing where you need to have watched them all to understand any of them, but I do wish that they had more coordination on things like designs. It would have been cool to see some Parliament or California-class starships on Picard (or even on Prodigy, which takes place just a few years after Lower Decks).

Its funny how they talk about streamlining ships like the Sovereign class because the Galaxy class with that saucer section was such a big target. Then you get to the Enterprise J..........

So this is how a Cali-class looks when is Soveraingned!
but for real I can see the Parl-class as a somewhat descendent from the Miranda, as it a ship that can do a lot of things with fairly minimal modification, To be honest this is the kind of ship you would like to serve for yours first years on Starfleet.

I think the Parliament would have made a pretty solid replacement for the Excelsior as fleet work horse. But of course the admirals of the Excel-minati nipped that in the bud and put out the Excelsior II

It’s interesting that this class lacks a multi-mission module. Perhaps keeping that streamlined warp geometry was considered more important? I’m willing to bet it has a higher top speed than the Luna.

Galactic Empire: "BEHOLD! This one-of-a-kind superweapon can destroy a planet, it is meant to bring this entire galaxy to heel!"
UFP: "Oh, this little thing? It's a gravimetric array, its main purpose is to crush moons but we suppose it could be upscaled to deal with, say, a rogue planet threatening an inhabited system. What, superweapon? No, no, no, it's a basic tool in our toolbox. See, we have an entire line of mid-range cruisers equipped with them, so there's nothing to worry about."

the Parliament was my pick for the Grand "One Free Lootbox Ship" and love it and i hope it will get a BB brickbuild modell one day (and also the Cerritos but she's not the topic of the Topic of the Video) and the Console can be quite usefull to CC a group of smaller ships and let them destroy each other :3
Only she's my only ship i named not "serious" buuut ... "Fakelondon", so blame NJB and his Trip to Canada

The weirdest thing about the Parliament-class is why are there windows in the nacelle pylons?
That area of the ship doesn't seem particularly inhabitable.

0:50 Love the Cerritos's crew, but the design? You could EASILY get rid of the engineering segment of the ship by severing its connectors. Sure, you can do that with the ship naccels, too, but, I don't know. Putting engineering on a whole other segment of the ship may not be the best idea.

Given that both Parliament-class vessels seen on screen are named after Canadian cities, a USS O'Brien leads me to two, wonderful head-canon conclusions: 1) The Parlies, are actually named after old Earth Commonwealth nations' cities, and 2) Miles O'Brien had a city named after him, presumably in Ireland. I somehow doubt that 24th-century Earth would be establishing new cities, so I guess they would probably have renamed a city named after a someone they discovered was a dirtbag.
