Most people swap hands to reload revolvers, For a lefty this is a little easier as you can press your right thumb to the cylinder to open it with your thumb probably pretty close to where it needs to be while hitting the cylinder release with left index finger. then holding the gun by the open cylinder between right thumb and middle finger, with index on the ejector you can dump the shells while fishing out your loader/rounds and turn the gun to begin loading. I'm unpracticed in turning the cylinder in my right hand while loading (I'm a righty) so take your time and figure out what works for you.

With speed-strips you can 'top up' your revolver. Let's say you fired 2 rounds. With a strip you can top up your gun with 2 rounds only.
Speed: I have seen videos that claim that, once user gets used to the strips they actually load faster with them! The truth is probably in between, as usual.
5 or 6 rounds? With strips this does not matter. With speed loaders you must have the right model for 5 and 6 rounds respectively.

Good video. My preference is both. I carry a couple of speedloaders(HKS) in a jacket pocket during cold months. A speedstrip in the Levi watch-pocket during hot months. The most important thing is to ALWAYS carry your gun. In most situations that 5- shot snubbie will handle the defensive situation WITHOUT having to be reloaded.

Carry both. Speed loader for when you’re completely empty or need to load as fast as possible. Speed strip for when you may want to only load a couple rounds (shoot 2, reload 2, ie: tactical reload) or when you only have time to get something in the gun (dump all empties then reload 2 to get the gun at least partially loaded). Even though your video of the speed strip reload showed that you had a round get hung up under the extractor slowing your time substantially, I know strips are slower than a loader.

    OOXOOXOX instead of OOXOOO.
Also, the last gap will make the 5th bullet peel away more easily, making it less likely to pop out of the cylinder.

TheWoollyMammoth good point. also, while fishing in the pocket is a fair test, I'd also like to see if the tester had a dedicated split six type belt holder for the speedloader. Also, I've read about and tested only loading 2+2 rather than all five which significantly speeds up a tactical reload. See Michael deBethencourt et al....myself, I carry speedstrips now but favor some sort of New York reload.

Don't see many people doing wheel gun videos. Thanks. I live in a rural area. I have 5 miles of dirt roads round trip every time I go to town. This can get problematic with dust & grit in a semiauto. Thus I prefer to carry a revolver. For concealed carry the strips are much less noticable and you can carry more. For open carry it doesn't matter and speed loaders are definitely the way to go. Just my opinion. Thanks again for the video.

Revolvers are still perfectly useful and can serve as viable sidearms, and they certainly chamber and handle very powerful cartridges to work as hunting and dangerous game/defensive weapons in niche roles. However, they are less prevalent due to two, really three, main factors. 1) They require more practice. Magazine fed auto loaders require less skill, and less time to master these skills. You can reload a wheelgun in seconds, but that takes time and practice; plus it's a manual of arms that can be easily interrupted. 2) They carry less ammunition than Magazine fed weapons. In almost any firefight, gun battle, shootout, shooting, etc. the shooter is under heavy duress and will likely fail to hit the target and may have to engage multiple targets. This makes having more rounds available before and after reloads in all configurations both practical and very desirable. 3) Both of these factors create a third, which is that police and military universally use magazine fed auto loaders for these very reasons. What cops and soldiers use, so too does everybody else.
I own a hammerless 640. Its a wonderful congealed sidearm, and I would trust my life with it. Ultimately though, I have found myself carrying a Walther single stack because I'm carrying more ammo, can reload quicker and more reliably, and it's easier to stay fully practiced. Different tools that can accomplish the same goal, just in different ways.

i personally really like the speed strip very easy to carry and for most part if you shoot more then the rounds that are in your gun your having a bad day as it is so
But also the speed strip allows for a tactical reload where the speed loader is all 6 or nothing
with the strip you could fire two rounds duck and reload those 2 only which is pretty easy cause when you push the rod to eject the rounds only the 2 fired ones will stay up allowing you to just pull them quick and ad the next two rounds

I didn’t read the comments but l am sure there is a ton of advise on “ then get a small frame semi auto with couple of slim easy to Cary magazines “ . Small revolvers are only practical to conduct business in a room or a house , and five round should eliminate the threat . Good luck and thanks for your videos.

Well done and informative. I have carried a J frame for over 15 years but have bought a S&W shield because of the limited round count of the J frame and the time of any reload. Most incidents would be over before any reload could be accomplished. Once I am comfortable with the Shield I will be switching because of the round advantage especially with the 8 round mag. I do like the simplicity and reliability of the S&W J frame.

Not sure if this was already mentioned below but another con to the speedloader is if the revolver is not fully empty, it will not fill very well. A speedstrip allows you to fill as needed. I supposed one could argue if you're in need of a speedy reload that you'll most likely be fully out of ammo which requires a full speedloader full. Just a thought.

Noah Keyes same thing with double barrel, break action shotguns. They're incredibly simple, and make it quite easy to carry safely, as it is obvious when you have rounds in your gun. Also, carrying it while it's broken is garunteed not to fire

Although your unreasonable rudeness is not deserving of a reply and is suggestive that you are no authority on the topic, I will do my best explain my logic to you anyway.
Dirt and mud getting into the slide of an auto will jam it too, not to mention a defense scenario where your gun receives a liberal application of mud is so uncommon that it's irrelevant to the discussion to begin with. A revolver also operates on a simpler mechanical system with less moving parts and less opportunities for things to go wrong than an auto. In addition to this, revolvers are not picky about ammo and will cycle regardless of what trash you put into it. Revolvers are also simpler in operation because you only have to pull the trigger to shoot. This holds especially true with DAO snubbies. Ammo capacity is essentially a moot point with an average of 2 shots being fired in self defense situations and situations requiring more than 5 or 6 rounds lying outside of 2 standard deviations of the 2 shot average.

Model T is 20th century tech. But just because something is old doesn't mean it's not still relevant and viable, this is especially true in the field of firearms. The 1911 pistol, M2 Browning machine gun, and Mauser bolt action are examples all older than the model T and still extreme widely used.

  • @philp411

Carry both. The speed strip and the speed loader have a place. If you're needing to reload and entire cylinder, the speed loader is preferred. If you shoot 2, reload 2, the speed strip would be preferred. This shoot 2, reload 2 technique is a tactic of a revolver when there is an opportunity to do so based upon the situation. If a bad guy is still a threat after a couple rounds, then continued application of rounds to the offender is necessary until such point as a full cylinder is needed. If after a couple rounds, the threat has gone down, move, seeking cover and use a strip to replace the empties/partially depleted cylinder. Certainly, there may be times when you cannot carry a speed loader. In these cases, the strip is obviously preferred to loose rounds, as you pointed out. But if possible, carrying both is a great option.

I have been researching speedloaders and I came across another TH-cam revolver video that compared the HKS to Safariland speedloaders. The advantage to the Safariland model is that there is no knob to turn. You press the outer surface of the loader to release the bullets. It is unlikely this could happen in your pocket and therefore you are less likely to find the bullets loose when you go to reload. I have not purchased, tested, or compared them but the videos were compelling and possibly may be worth looking into yourself.

      @danieljones3683 8 ปีที่แล้ว

I carry revolvers and I also shoot competitively with revolvers. The Safariland speedloaders are superior to the HKS. The Ruger LCR stock grip will not work with the Safariland though unless you modify the grip. They do work great with the J frame S&W.

I believe it is a rare occasion, and most likely only somewhat prone to cheaper revolvers. In my case it was a Charter Arms .44 spl, think it was called the Bulldog. Man I loved that fuckin gun, but one day the trigger would just get caught about 1/2 way through the pull. And it wouldn't stop doing it. And belive me you can charge a revolver whit speedloader much more faster than you show in this video! You almost make the time to reload a revolver bullet by bullet! Pratice makes perfection! My advice to you is that you need much more training in reloading and timing on put the ammo down range, in particular at that distance!

The way Mass Ayoob teaches it and the way I do it is to leave the first spot by the grip tab empty. It gives you a spot to run your middle fimger and better index your thimb and pointer finger. You don’t have much leverage to pull the round out of that first spot anyway and most people struggling getting the round out of that first spot. He even only loads 5 rds in the speed strips for 6 rd revolvers because that first spot causes do many botched reloads resulting in only successfully loading 4 rds in a 6 shot gun.

I like that a speed-strip will fit in the watch pocket of my jeans as if it was made for just that purpose. That being said, if you can find a good way to carry the speed loader, it's certainly faster. I have used both extensively and see a place for both. As an aside, I have used the HKS brand speed loaders exclusively for years; they're not "gimmicky" and I find them quite durable. That being said, I'm going to try the 5 Star speed loaders for my LCRx .38 Special (J2 model) as I understand that they clear the grips on the LCRx/LCR a bit better, we'll see. Thank you for the video, you do a damned good job. You enunciate clearly and express just the right amount of enthusiasm. I have watched a ton of videos recently on the LCR/LCRx line of revolvers and an equal amount of .38 Special ammunition reviews and many are damned near unwatchable because of the videographer's addiction to blaring ass music (not interested), or the poor quality of the narration (too much with the Eeyore). It's a nice test but not very useful.
The benefit to speed strips is that they lay flat and are easily hidden. They compliment a small, lightweight revolver very well when concealment, surprise and ALWAYS HAVING A GUN WITH YOU is important.
The trick to speed strips is not to reload all 5. it's to reload 2+2. or, as my instructor taught our class, how many rounds does it take to reload your revolver? One. One round.
Speedloaders are quicker, yes (with practice), but they are also much bulkier. You also must be dedicated to ONE type of speedloader -- SKS or Safariland -- since the release mechanism is so different (twist vs push).
I have purchased both. I carry speed strips. Then Aga, I carry two j-frames, so I'm not too concerned about reloading.
Thank you for the video! Good shooting!

blackangel6682 I'd imagine revolvers still being used because of their accuracy and potential stopping power in exchange for less per 'clip' sure the arguement would be get a bigger/better handgun but again, revolvers are surprisingly accurate. the simple act of pulling back the hammer before firing a shot makes all the difference whether it's a single action or double action revolver

    • @bt4350

The typically heavy trigger pull makes it safer to conceal with a round in the firing position.
The snubnoses can be extremely small and compact, again making them better for concealment.
      Mechanical simplicity.
This isn't Call of Duty, so having a 16 round magazine doesn't benefit you in a real life self defense scenario.
Ever go camping in rattlesnake country? It's nice to have a revolver with some snake shot on your hip.
Have fun concealing a full size pistol vs a single stack 9 or 380.

blackangel6682 for one I'd rather have 6 rounds of 357mag than 6 or 7 or even 8 rounds of a semi auto caliber! second revolvers carry and conceal much easier than semi autos do and 3rd revolvers are like driving a manual transmission vs a semi auto being an automatic transmission you just get a better feeling. it's a connection instead of just "going thru the motions" when I first got into handguns I too went straight for the semi autos ( tho I chose all metal da/sa) I never really got into the fantastic plastic pistols but now that I've been in the game for a while plastic pistols are boring ugly and all the same while revolvers are classy and just damn beautiful I carry one every day and don't feel underpowered at all you really shouldn't knock it until you've tried it

But I purchased some orange Tuff strips at the same time I bought the black Tuff strips. After 4yrs the orange strips crumbled and broke apart. I am not sure if its the dye they used making them inconsistent? Normally the strips are on my belt (Tuff belt pouch) or in my travel bag/car when I need obey local OC/CHL rules. They are used atleast once a month at the range and I never had a issue with them or noticed any fatigue issues.

Speed strips are an improvement over ONLY loose rounds; there's no comparison with speedloaders when it comes to reload speed. The main practical advantage speed strips have is that they allow you to do partial reloads. As for carrying, I would NEVER carry spare ammo--speed strip, speedloader or magazine--in a pants pocket, unless I were skilled and practiced enough to access it while lying down, kneeling, crouching, etc. Chances are, if you need to reload in a self-defense situation, you'll be reloading behind cover, not standing up and directly facing the threat.

Very good presentation. I found it useful and I'm certainly going to reconsider my options with respect to reloads.

Nice video. Training with speed strips is not always full reload. Many practice ejection the original empty’s and get 2 in the cylinder and get back in the fight or finish it then get 2 more in if needed. The speed loader is for full reload every time.

For those dissing on speed strips- it's proof you don't daily carry. Slower-yes. Ease of carry and concealment-A+, and that's the whole point of them.

I have seen speedloaders with which it is not necessary to turn them, just press them against the revolver drum when reloading to release the bullets.
In a personal opinion, if you are going to use a revolver as a personal defense, it is best to have one with which you can recharge with moonclips.

I made my own type for shoulder holster. Mine is 38 spec. Tygon tubing half inch with one be glued cap and one not. Can be held on strap more or less like a bandoleer. You can keep 6 - 10 in a very small space and never bulky. Yes loads one bullet at a time but with practice, about one to two seconds reload.

Most people prefer revolvers because of several reasons: reliability, quicker resolution to a misfire or malfunction and ease of use. Semiautomatic pistols have an advantage in capacity. I’ve always carried a S & W 642 .38. I believe that the FBI states that most gun incidents are within 15 feet and average 3 rounds. All said…. It’s what you are comfortable with and PRACTICE that most.

One thing i learn about a revolver when reloading, it's an art.
