  • Manny's parents come to stay. Bernard wants rid of them, preferably the day before yesterday. And Fran is rather grumpy about pretending to be Manny's girlfriend to corroborate Manny's letters home.

    Its sad how badly they treated Mannys parents in this episode. I almost cried

    • @Loctorak
      @Loctorak ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To be fair, they invited themselves over almost unannounced, it's not Mannys property to allow him to play the host at his discretion and they also try to stay as long as possible despite the clear inconvenience because it suits them.
      IMO Bernard had every right to act as he did. Just because the parents pull puppy dog eyes and act meek and vulnerable doesn't mean they're in the right to just impose themselves in a strangers house, and their lack of awareness of the situation rests purely on Manny - he's really the one who behaved most deplorably in this episode because he could have avoided the whole thing by being assertive but instead makes everyone suffer because hes being a wuss.
      And i mean i dont care, but if we're going deep enough into it to be crying about the parents, the above are all things that also deserve a mention

    This episode contains what I always thought of as the quintessential Black Books moment, where there is apparently another bar under the table.
    I always thought this was a special effect failure - originally I suspect the idea was that there is only one bar, the bar in the restaurant; and the characters under the table are simply accessing it by looking upwards from under the table. The bartender actor seems to be the same (11:10 versus 11:33). It's just that the idea was infeasible to film, so they built the miniature bar.

    • @oliverholmes-gunning5372

      I think it's tapping into that very British awkwardness around parents and older people in general- Manny and his Dad's super awkward greeting is perhaps the finest example of this. Unlike in other European countries where families stick together and gather round for Sunday lunch once a week, in the UK people tend to hate having to spend time with relatives and in-laws, and avoid it if they possibly can. So even though Manny's parents are perfectly nice, polite, respectful people they simply don't fit in with the younger generations. It says a lot more about Bernard and co than it does about the parents of course, and it's one of the many examples of genius observational comedy in the series. Another delightfully awkward and cringy example in British comedy would be in the Christmas episode of Peep Show when Mark's parents and sister come round for dinner, although it's more warranted in that case since Mark's Dad really is a total wanker.

    • @oliverholmes-gunning5372
      @oliverholmes-gunning5372 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Also in fairness they are just a little grating- not in any obvious way, but just in that general "older person missing the point and going on a bit" kind of way. Not that that's an excuse to kick them out, but still...

    In the scenes between manny and Fran in minute 9:15-10.03, anyone think manny’s lines are dubbed, and Bernard at 9:14 is a double?

    • @Loctorak
      @Loctorak ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure about the first one, but why would Bernard be a double? He does nothing in the scene so it would make no sense to hire a second actor to play that scene

      Having a fuzzy recollection of the exact date of a memory isn't really an alzheimers thing, though. Thats just routine forgetfulness.
      If Moo-pa had switched between treating Manny as a grown man and as a 5yr old because their mind can no longer always tell the difference... _that_ would feel a lot more like alzheimers

      How is it mean to not want to host two strangers for a week without being forewarned? What's mean is Mannys parents showing up about 20min after their only warning call and without even checking who owns the house before moving into it like it was theirs. That's a garbage way to behave and Bernard had every right to be angry about it/want them gone.

    La Tamsin Greig, attrice milf inglese di carisma che conosco solo stasera meglio nel film di stephen Frears "tamara Drew" (...in realtà già 'avevo adocchiata nella serie di film Marigold Hotel), merita davvero tanto... soprattutto a livello dei suoi sublimi piedoni. Un bacio su di essi! Muah!!!

      Wouldn't it have been cheaper to just buy the DVD box set, anyway? That's gotta be what, $30 and you can watch them all as many times as you want, versus subscribing the Netflix for ? months at whatever theyre charging just to be allowed to view it within the window youre being constantly billed for?
      I mean it's your money, but that's what I'd have done...
